Can't speak from Trial perspective much but from dungeon one - yes, prioritizing high threat targets to taunt, ranged ones to pull and when to use cc(pull ranged ads=>cc, not the other way round) does sound way more fun than coming in, pressing "taunt all" button and then, depending on your luck and your healer, either insta dying or standing there holding block doing nothing til it's time to press that magic button again. I also DO like the part where as a dps I have to watch out for myself somewhat at least even with a proper tank.
There's no profit to gain in this game by having an aoe taunt imo. If you're legit being overwhelmed by mobs running in all directions despite your best attempts then you're probably having a dps issue, not an aoe taunt one.

✭✭✭✭✭The game is designed so that the tank cannot hold aggro on every poart of the trash mob or a boss' adds. The tank can crowd control them, but not hold taunt entirely. The healer and the DPS have to be prepared to take at least some hits.
Now, consider how that has to change with an AOE taunt. The tank can now hold aggro on everyone, so the tank only needs to taunt and hold block. The healer needs to heal the tank only because the tank is the only one taking damage. The DPS only need to stay out of stupid while mowing down enemies.
That sounds fantastic, right! Or, that sounds boring!
Either way, let's look at how that impacts game design. Because adding an AOE taunt would make the current dungeon designs boring, ZOS would have to update the dungeons to account for it. That's an interesting propostion.
For one, you now need a tank and healer. What? Yep. Oh, did you think that mob damage was going to stay the same? LOL, no. If tanks can AOE taunt everything, the way to punish a bad tank is to have an untaunted mob creature, any untaunted add, be able to kill your healer or DPS. DPS self-heals aren't going to cut it anymore. The tank certainly needs a healer, now that the tank is taking much more damage from all the enemies focused on them. If the tank fails, the group fails.
Second, mechanics on trash mobs get a lot less interesting now that everything is aggroed to the tank. The healer is healing the tank and buffing the group, not much different there. The DPS now really are rotation machines. Priority targets are now even more important for the DPS as its their job to burn down enemies before the tank can't block/healers can't outheal incoming damage. Difficulty is more about HP and increased damage from the boss/adds.
Personally, I think that tanking by pressing my AOE taunt then holding block while my healer heals me and the DPS do their rotation ad nauseum sounds pretty boring compared to the current set-up where I taunt priority adds and crowd control the rest, the healer is responsible for everyone, and the DPS need to have some situational awareness and self-heals to go with that DPS rotation.
Adding an AOE taunt enforces the trinity, where a good tank is necessary or else the group will fall to high damage adds/boss, a good healer is necessary or else the tank falls, and good DPS are necessary or else the tank inevitably gets overwhelmed. Yeah, that does mean that ZOS would have to update group dungeons, but they certainly would because otherwise an AOE taunt turns them into a snooze fest.
So its worth considering whether you want this game design to stay where it is with a certain amount of freedom to still succeed while having party members that range from noob to fantastic at each role or whether you want the game to shift towards a hardcore enforcement of tank/healer/DD/DD in group dungeons. Adding an AOE taunt and adjusting the content accordingly is a huge step towards enforcing the trinity and tank/healer/DD/DD roles, while making those roles harder to succeed at. Since ZOS said they aren't going for enforcing the trinity, I doubt it will happen, but tis still worth considering the change to game design this suggestion would bring.12 -

I like having to prioritize my taunt targets, use snares and drag in the stragglers.
My issue with an aoe taunt is tanking would become, group taunt then hold block.
Besides, if tank attacks first with aoe skills you get a 'soft' taunt. Combine with a snare and the dps should be able to burn the mobs before they can do anything.1 -

✭✭✭Personally, i consider ESO's dungeons to be cheesy and sloppy headaches. I typically enjoy dungeon running in most MMOS that are this style. But i cringe at the thought of running dungeons in ESO. Id say most of the player base agrees with me, since considering the active population on my server, i should be able to nearly instant queue for dungeons most times of the day. However, if i dont queue during peak, im going to wait at least 20 minutes probably and sometimes over an hour. The bad part of this, is your not queuing for a few dungeons in your level range. Your queuing for ALL the dungeons with everyone in game. And given population size and that fact, queues should be instant even for dps.
Some think that the "traditional" dungeons of other MMOs are easy. But your not cheesing your way through dungeons your level in those games. I can sleep through most of the normal dungeons in ESO. I can even toe to toe with not one but 3-4 mobs without healer support. And with a decent healer i can tank most bosses on a med armor character than doesnt even have CP 160 yet or decent gear. Then we have random raid mechanics thrown in normal dungeons to , i guess, make them harder? It doesnt make them harder, it makes them more annoying.
No one has a defined role in dungeons. I can self heal with a couple of swaps. A healer can do as much dps as hps in some cases and a tank can use two hand weapons and just dps through the dungeon. Adds arent challenging they are just annoying clutter like all the neutral NPCs in the dungeons. The whole system is just a mess. And you will find post after post on these forums about how easy it is to cheese through the dungeons, even solo many of them, despite that the mobs level with you. What does that tell you? If i can solo things designed for groups at my level, then the system is broken.
Take WoW for example. The tank tanks, the healer heals, the dps kills. If they dont do their job then the dungeon becomes much harder for the group. If they really fail especially the tank or healer, the dungeon becomes nearly impossible. In ESO, we may go entire sections of a dungeon, with bosses, without a healer or a tank. People can just phone it in.
The mobs in WoW dungeons are mostly elite. Your not going solo a dungeon your level, id be well impressed if you made it to the first boss. Your DPS and healer also arent going to tank elites. Most games have dungeons with a similar setup to WOW. People like that setup. People want defined roles and group work in dungeons and raids, not things you can sleep through.
The dungeons in ESO allow for terrible group habits. You dont ever learn to work with a group which only adds to the messiness of the dungeons. The design is terrible, and the queue waits agree with me. People just dont enjoy ESO dungeons. Which is why you see a new thread almost daily with some complaint about dungeons.

Not everyone is all hardcore about this game, and tanks are in short supply, js. You bring up a good point actually, vMA weapons, Asylum weapons, and many armor sets-both dungeon and crafting are locked behind DLCs that have to be paid for. Not only has everything in the game that needs or quasi need a tank been tanked well without an AoE taunt the devs have specifically stated the game is designs as such that it is not intended for tanks to grab every mob. We all have the tools available to deal with a little agro for a short time.
Basically, that adds up to no AoE taunt.0
