So I just spent some gold and made this build but am running sun and Mara's with 2 skoria. I have only played it for a few hours but here is some things I've noticed.

    1. More tanky than I expected. I was kiting in a tower around 5-10 people just using wings, healing ward , and resto ulti.
    2. Damage is nice and chains is amazing. It allows you to stick to your opponent and burst them down.
    3. My coordination with this setup still needs practice. I'm often not using my skills at the right time. I ended up taking elemental drain off and replacing it with flames of Oblivion and on the back bar I slotted rapid regeneration for extra heals.
    4. I'm not a vampire but am considering it strongly. I hate mist form but in some situations it can help LOSS and possibly surviving a situation.
    5. Really would like to run bloodspawn because constantly being able to hit life giver is op. However I feel like damage would suffer alot.

Overall obviously mobility is the biggest weakness but your surprisingly tanky in light and if you can space out some people you can burst them down quickly. I'm almost tempted to run deep breath for extra burst.

Overall I'm having fun with this and it's a nice break from Stam warden.

Awesome, good to see people experimenting with this build (and non-S&B builds in general).

Which destro skill did you slot on front bar in place of Elemental Drain? I hope you're not missing the +8% single target damage from Ancient Knowledge :P

The crit from flames of Oblivion make up for it a bit. What so you think about deep breath or draw essence in this spot. Could add burst with leap similar in fashion to sub assault and dawnbreaker. Also how mandatory do you feel skoria is? Haven't got a chance to play much last few days. Look forward to testing more in a few days when I have some time.

Without ele drain I can't see any reason to run destro over 2h on a magdk, you're already melee and 2h has FM.

Well, there are some other good reasons for destro over 2H:
    • Over 2x stronger light (and heavy) attacks.
    • Double chance of proccing Burning/Concussed (shock glyph) status effects.
    • Better chance at proccing BSW with light attack weaves.

But I agree, Elemental Drain is really, really good for mag DK.

None of those justify running destro over 2h though, only thing that makes destro beat 2h for magdk imo is drain. A little extra light attack damage is really incomparable to full root immunity.

I just can't see it, especially since you already have high damage and uptime on BSW should be high enough on a magdk seeing how it's high on magblade that only uses reach to proc it.

Gave it a go with chains this past weekend. Things I liked and didn't like...

    Like:
1.Chains. Un-dodgeable FINALLY!!!! Really good in Bgs as long as you stay near your team or have clear openings for burst.
2.Resto Ulti OP. Especially when it's so cheap. I prefer the other morph though for the crit.
3.Skoria. Great for Bg's and 1v1. Usually helps with some killing blows.

    Dislike:
Most of these are from open world...
    1. Chains. Was pretty useless in open world with the amount of snares/cc. I also usually fight extremely outnumbered. Without a templar as soon as ur snared its a countdown to who dies first. Swapped immediately for mist and had better results instantly...was "ok" when ulti dropping with a team.
    2. Relying on only healing ward as damage mitigation. In a small scale group...good luck getting your own shield. When pressured without an ult = death.
    3. Skoria. Not my cup of tea in open world. Usually targeted the wrong person I was trying to kill. Swapped to grothdar and had much better success with ulti drops.
    4. 11k stam. Simply not enough without two shields/mist while getting focused. Being able to at least dodge roll ONCE helps dramatically as you can mitigate 100% of all incoming dodgeable damage. Thats the best kind of mitigation possible. Also lets you Healing Ward->Dodge Roll->Mist into LOS.

Changes I made and some reasons why:
1.Bsw->SUN...guaranteed damage on front bar is important in my eyes. I love BSW dont get me wrong, but sometimes you just need a quick leap for a KB and if BSW isn't procced then its gg. Plus, me dropping skoria gives me the health I need to stay at 23k.
2.Mara->LICH...Mara is good...but Harness coupled with Healing Ward is just too strong to ignore. With lich proc + pot + ulti dump you're at 100% and by the time you get low again all CD's will be over.
3.Skoria->GROTHDAR...biggest issue I find with magDK while fighting multiple people is being able to target that one low target who is usually behind someone else. You MIGHT get lucky with skoria proccing on that target, but usually it doesn't. With grothdar you just pop an immovable and stay right on target after an ulti drop and it usually ends in a KB. No targeting required. Also sitting at 39k max mag is nice.
4.TRI-FOOD. My BiS for MagDK since day one. Lich lets you drop regen drink. 1636 unbuffed regen (3106 with pot + lich) + harness is more than enough sustain.

    Skill changes I made:
1.FRONT - Engulfing/Eruption, Burning Embers, Ele Drain, Fossilize, Flame Lash, Leap
    2. BACK - Mist, Healing Ward, Harness, Volatile, Molten, Resto Ulti/Bats

*New favorite combo with grothdar* - Ele Drain, L.A., Burning Embers, L.A., Fossilize, Eruption, L.A., Whip-> Flame Lash -> Leap

Again. This is all preference. BSW+MARA+SKORIA is a great build and pairs well with groups but lacked in areas that were important to my own play style. Ty OP for sharing your build. I found some things I liked and didn't like and it helped make my own play style better. Cheers!

I have a few good 1vX, 2vX clips I recorded this weekend, I'm sure I'll post a vid later this month after some more testing. Destro/Resto Magk DK is fun as s**t.

Might have to try a few of these changes. So far I love the build. Not sure if I wanna grind for a lich resto staff though

Yeah, mine is a very fast paced, bursty build - more reminiscent of a stamina NB than a typical mag DK I guess :P

Based on those changes, it sounds to me like you prefer a slower paced, more sustained dps oriented one - which is totally fine.

Looking forward to that video, the game needs more destro/resto builds & less permablocking

About Healing Ward though, that's a very good observation - I mostly play solo (or in organized grp for BGs), so people "stealing" my Healing Ward isn't as much of a problem.

In small scale (or larger) Cyrodiil grp though I can see that being a problem, so people trying this build: make some adjustments if you play in grp mostly (one idea would be to swap Embers on main bar for Harness).

Yea it was quite fun to be honest. Ppl drop like flies if you get them alone lol. But you are correct, I prefer to set up all my burst in a timely matter. I think it has to do with me being used to kiting & then bottle necking people in open world :D.

    Keep the destro dream alive!!!

Well, after Battle Spirit it's around 1,5k dmg/second more with this build from the light attacks :P

I'd compare it to a 1,5k/second DoT - but that's not really accurate since those attacks can be dodged/reflected. Still, it's quite valuable to have that extra bit of damage.

The burning status effect is also some 800-1k dmg/second, so having over double uptime on that does put some extra pressure on targets too (not to mention the Skoria procs it causes)

These are little things that add up, hard to really notice but they do help considerably.

Btw, aren't most magblades actually using inferno staff (and light attack weaves) with that BSW setup? I don't know if I'd ever slot BSW on a ice/lightning staff setup.

Yeah, you'd have an abysmal uptime on bsw without an inferno staff. Even then though, magdk has like 2 dots and 1 spammable that can proc it so light attacks seem like something you could leave out without much issue.

I'm just saying though, in my experience dueling meta magdks on my magblade this patch I can safely say that 2h trumps destro. I don't know how viable the 2h setup would be open world since skoria/riposte/sun has like 0 stam sustain, but it's crazy op in duels. BiS for magdk that don't run s/b with durok's imo.

Yeah, I've dueled those builds a lot on my mag DK - I think I have only around 50% win rate vs those builds, but then again I've the same win rate against good destro/resto mag DKs so there's not too much of a difference there.

I can see destro/resto builds being easier for magblade (no forward momentum to get out of cripple), but do those builds run chains/wings? I think those are the two key skills vs magblade, and how difficult the fight is really depends on if those are slotted or not. Chains entirely remove the possibility of kiting & wings make it 10x more difficult to land the burst combo for magblade.

I think destro/resto DK stands a better chance against magplars than 2H version thanks to having elem drain, more DoT procs etc and probably against magicka sorc too, but 2H should be better vs the meta heavy TK S&B rearming trap stam builds.

Further things I've noticed with this build

    1. Have been running rapid regeneration on the back bar with lingering health pots and am really tanky.

    2. Is harness better than wings? With harness and healing ward that might be tempting.

    4. Finally getting used to elemental drain it helps with sustain. Puts me at like 2300 effective Magicka recovery.

    5. Damage is nice sustain with periods of decent burst.

Soooooo here are a few issues

    1. I feel like skoria is not that great when outnumbered a lot. Someone above mentioned grothdar but isn't the damage garbage on grothdar? Might test out bloodspawn or malubeth. But for now skoria is staying unless someone says something insightful about grothdar.

    2. Gosh when snared by multiple opponents it's over with. I'm highly thinking of going vampire and putting mist form on.

    3. What level vampire should I stay at. The main reason I haven't gone vamp is because of the extra fire damage. And also does the vamp passives really help with healing ward?

Thanks for this build idea I'm having a blast. I would really like it if you could watch a video I'm working on and give me some pointers to this playstyle. I'm doing pretty good on it to be honest mag dk is something I've played for years.

    1. My grothdar ticks for 900-1k a second on ALL "decently geared" targets around me. More damage to under geared players. Over 5 seconds the damage is basically the same as skoria but you can steer it where you want it. For 1v1 Skoria wins by default.
    2. I've never not run mist. There's a reason for it lol.
    3. Stage 4, as a dunmer and points into ele defender fire damage isn't that noticeable to me. Especially coupled with harness + healing ward + mist

Remember not all play styles work for everybody. I'd choose things you like from OP's build and changes things you don't like.

Yeah, that's the general idea why I prefer Life Giver over Light's Champion - that free Mutagen (my preferred morph, the other one works too) is amazing.
    2. Is harness better than wings? With harness and healing ward that might be tempting.

IMO, overkill. If you can survive with Healing Ward alone, then you get more benefit by slotting skills that help you get kills, rather than slotting skills that help you survive/sustain.

It also kinda makes Eyes of Mara worse, because you'd naturally cast less Healing Wards with Harness slotted & would thus get less value from it.
    3. Finally getting used to elemental drain it helps with sustain. Puts me at like 2300 effective Magicka recovery.

Yep. Good Elemental Drain uptime is all you need to sustain, imo :P
    4. Damage is nice sustain with periods of decent burst.

It sure is. I'm kind of still learning the art of mag DK burst myself, there's a lot of little things you can do to really maximize the burst damage (i.e. making sure every Leap happens with a FoB projectile, utilizing destro heavy attack->Chains more etc).

I think it's as good as any set out there when outnumbered. Remember that it does deal some AoE damage as well. If you want to compare it to Grothdar, it's basicly the same thing except in a burst format rather than sustained ticks of damage.
You can slot something like TK, BS or Malu for more survivability, but it does reduce the killing potential of this build.
    2. Gosh when snared by multiple opponents it's over with. I'm highly thinking of going vampire and putting mist form on.

Well yeah, if you've got like 3-4 people spamming wrecking blows & rev slices at you then that snare really sucks. Not much you can do about those situations, except utilizing LoS & bursting them down before they burst you down (those Skoria procs really help here).

Usually it's a good idea to spam Fossilize to everyone in your melee range in those scenarios, not just the one opponent you're trying to kill.
Make them waste stamina & time CC breaking & dodging out of those roots, that helps very much with survivability & is almost always better than just spamming Healing Ward.

That's really the only problematic scenario with snares I've had, Empowering Chains should remove all the other issues (getting kited etc) & sometimes lets you reposition away from the Rev Slice spammers :P
    3. What level vampire should I stay at. The main reason I haven't gone vamp is because of the extra fire damage. And also does the vamp passives really help with healing ward?

Stage 3 vampirism makes a huge difference, especially vs those abovementioned stamina builds. Also combo's really well with the Healing Ward because you're able to stay at low health longer without getting bursted down, and people will actually deal less damage to the shield you cast as well when you're at low health. I'd definitely recommend it.

Not stage 4 though, there's zero benefits from that with this build (only less health regen & more fire dmg taken...)

Sure thing, you could make an unlisted youtube vid & shoot me a pm - glad to help if I can. The playstyle is really more akin to stamblade than mag dk, so it might be a bit of a "culture shock" to someone who has played mostly mag dk :D

Flame lash does not consume off-balance on a CC-immune target. That means every player who just broke out of your fossilize and is rooted by it.

Yeah, been testing things on PTS.

Too early to form any consensus though, there's a lot of things that are likely to get nerfed. I doubt they let the infinite Power Lashes go live for example, or this certain new magicka proc set that is just absolutely insane and makes me want to play melee magblade next patch...

Trying out the build here I have had good results with it. Trying to get used to keeping elemental drain up. Currently I have respec to dunmer and am also now a vampire. Running mist and wings on back bar with the spammable healing ward. Damage is good. 10 k flame lash tooltip with a weave between attacks. 19 k ferocious leap tooltip. Sun plus Mara's.

Can't stay at anything but vamp 4 if you use mist form. Each time you use a vamp ability you creep towards a higher stage.

So just an update on some things.......all things are of course my experience, my playstyle, and my opinion.......

    1. I went Dunmer and vamp but it's absolute garbage (imo of course). My survivability went down a ton. Mist form is pure *** just like I already knew. You get a little extra damage from dunmer probably like 900-1100 (but lose more defense than it's worth) tool tip depending on buff and vamp allows u to mist but it's no worth the survivable loss.

    2. Mist form is just not good. I've heard people say mist just delays your death well I tested it and just a handful of situations I was able to escape but this is out of countless fights. The healing ward mist then cancel move is not that good either. If your misting you are outnumbered significantly. I know in the past I've used it to kite but I feel taking 25 percent extra fire damage is not worth it. Chains help more than you would think on moving through snares. Just got to remember to keep it rotated even though you don't need to gap close alot.

    3. Argonian vs dunmer is more significant than you think. I can still hit good burst with argonian and be much more tanky. The potion passive allows me to run lingerings and that combined with rapid regeneration is amazing. Trust me on that one. Honestly Magicka sustain is infinite.

    4. Clockwork fillet with troll king makes you so tanky I can't describe it. The loss of skoria effects your killing ability significantly but you can still kill pug City and be able to tank good players.

    5. Tested combat prayer and the uptime on minor beserk is just to poor. It was cool running a 12 k flame lash tooltip but the heal is garbage plus with a normal rotation it's hard to keep up.

    6. I think overall I like wings better than harness. Dduke made a good point if your running Mara's having harness kinda goes against the set. There have been times I spam healing ward.

    7. I still have 9k plus tool tip on flame lash and have 26 k health on my build. No sustain problems because of destro resto with ele drain. I don't need Magicka pots to sustain because of argonian passives it's just enough and with lingerings (cycled with immovables vs certain classes of course) I'm super tanky. 22 k spell resist and 19 k physical. It's pretty good.

Anyhow just some more insights this is my favorite mag dk setup. Briefly ran an all sturdy light armor bloodspawn shacklebreaker desert rose setup for few hours tonight and just didn't like it after using this.

    thx for that sumary.

i bought a race changer only bec its on sale too... maybe im going to use it on my dunmer dk. before i do this i will be testing it first if the char suits me or not

since its an old char it has outlvled snb/2h/bow/dw/hA and undouned mettle aswell as horses (yes it was stam as dunmer ^^)

destro is at lvl 47 and restro at 27 atm working on this.

glad to see an eventuel revive of an old since months unused char :)

the only limitation of falling in love with dk again is my pvp grp... yes we use also inperfect grp combos... im just allways the guy who want to be as helpful as possible and mag dk is in current meta not a good choice ... lets see if this is changing next update but i asume its not..

hey, theoretically can bsw be backbared on the healing staff.. depending of how tanky a staff dk is... would it not be a high dmg increase with bsw backbar + something like sun frontbar?1 :D

Considering your flame damage spammables are on the front bar, the BSW uptime would drop drastically I'm afraid.

You can try it (and probably get some insane leaps/whips, sometimes), but I don't think it'll be as consistent. Also, dropping Mara is going to hurt your sustain a lot.

well i play since homestead and never tried that set really but i remember for example blobs was using bsw snb backbar on his magdk build in cwc/hotr

u just need to divide your offensive and deffensive skills like: dots backbared on bsw healstaff and direct dmg frontbar. support skills to fill of the bars what suits you the most.

i changed alot of my chars to this system and went away from strictly offence/buff bars and i do since them better!

Yeah, but he plays double S&B afaik. It's much easier to divide your skills on such a setup.

With inferno staff (and especially when it's nirnhoned & the off bar resto is infused), you really have to try & keep your hardest hitting single target abilities (as they get the +8% from ancient knowledge) on main bar to get the maximum benefit for them.

I'm not saying it's impossible to backbar BSW on this setup, but it'd be inconvenient for sure.

Edit: also worth noting, there's not that much room to swap skills around. The skills which are absolutely locked on inferno staff bar 100%: Chains, Whip, Fossilize, Elem Drain, Leap.
This leaves Embers as the only possible skill you can swap to off bar, so you'd have that+Engulfing Flames (if you don't run wings)+Flames of Oblivion as the only sources of fire dmg on the resto bar.
The good thing is that almost any skill on resto bar can be swapped to main bar atleast.

Will see how ZOS manage to handle off-balance in next patch (so far not looking too good for magDK on that part). Will definitely try this out for PvP if ZOS screws up PvE magDK (aka I remorph my chains xD)
