Ultima Online had this - it was basically a free text box other people could open by clicking on your character. Role-players used it to give a description/short back story for their character, other people used it to advertise their guild or let people know what kind of things they did in-game.
If you weren't interested then it was simple - don't type anything and don't click on the button to view anyone else's description. No change from what we have now.
But I really enjoyed seeing it, it was an interesting insight into the person. Yes of course some were terrible: over the top Mary-Sue fanfic backgrounds, absurd claims about being the world's first at something no one could verify and very few people would care about, bad attempts at humour etc. But some were really interesting.
It's something I've often wished all multiplayer games would include.
