I'm only socially awkward because I don't like most people/the public.

I find the majority of people I'm forced to interact with to be vain, materialistic, and shallow. I have little in common with them.

Very true, and I interact with them only at a surface (but polite) level. However it's good to know and accept that there are all kinds of people out there. It was a culture shock when I went to college, then again when I joined the work force. I mean, there are myriad of different spectrum of people. The level of individuality is incredible. I realize I am just one of them and I do my best to withhold judgement before getting to know them.

I'm starting to wonder what would happen if an unknown force put all ESO players in a same room (one the size of.. football field?) for 2 hours. Would we.. explode.?

Consider this. Long ago, avid gamers were generally considered at least a bit nerdy and/or socially awkward, at least it was so when I went to school in the 90's. Not something you'd want to tell your potential g/f if you know what I mean. It's still true.

Nothing has really changed from my experience. I'm a grown man now (26 years old), and most of my friends have stopped gaming 10+ years ago (I know very few gamers anymore). People often think I'm joking when I tell them I still play video games. They say it's time to "grow up" and become an adult. They can bite me.

I'm simultaneously social and socially awkward. in part becasue I'm an abject failure at small talk and in part because I have mixed results when it comes to coming up with witty comebacks before conversation moves on. being an introvert doesn't help much either. but.. I get by well enough. mostly cause I tend to have best time in company of other nerds :) last time SO and I tried to hang out with other couples who were more of a regular people, we were both bored to tears and decided to never do THAT again.

a lot of people have a very screwed up definition of what it means to be an adult. for some reason in their eyes its not being responsible productive person, but rather what hobbies you enjoy.

46 here myself. The "older" gamers are the ones I have the most "Fun" with. They're just there to play the game and have fun. There's no measuring of "epeens" involved. Yeah we wipe a few times, cracks some jokes about the healer sleeping on the job and move on.

I'm an exceptionally mild extrovert. Social situations and obligations are no issue for me, but I only really care about being around the people I love, good natured strangers, and people who either teach, or whom I could teach.

The rest are just not worth the energy I could expend productively elsewhere.

I don't go looking for these people, so I often come across as either awkward or disinterested. It's a stigma I'm not happy with, but the people who know me, know that neither is the case for them. They're the only ones whose opinions matter, to me.

    Call me a wallflower.

I'm not "socially awkward" - but my social "cup" does get filled very quickly.

Also I would say that > 80% of humanity has nothing to offer me but an opportunity to get enmeshed in their problems.

I'm usually happy going about my own business and I'm happy in my own company. I also meet people, but they have to be pretty drama-free and respect personal boundaries.

My whole life I've usually had nerdy friends. Maybe because they are good with personal boundaries.

I'm about as socially awkward as they come. I don't really say much out loud, but it's easy for me to type out stuff. At least my friends understand that I can say dumb or silly things without really intending it.

I used to be shy and awkward around other players; I was afraid they'd be judgmental or that I wouldn't be able to keep up/compete/interact adequately. Now, I don't care what they think of me, my skills, or my style; there are so many people online, they probably won't notice or remember me at all.

Direct interaction bothers me, though. Sometimes. I feel awkward around trade-spammers, mount-flashers, and those guys who dance or play instruments in crowded spaces. It's particularly bad around dolmens, so I tend to just stand off to the side and politely ignore them while I check any close achievements in my journal. It's nothing personal, just... I'm not the "join in" guy is all.
