I'm fine with it as it is, and yes I do have a lot of characters across two accounts!
The only change I'd make is to follow the EQ/EQ2 bank system of having part of the bank inventory shared, and part specific to the character. That way you could put an item you wanted to keep for one character in his section of the bank and not deconstruct it by mistake when a different character is at the crafting station!
The OP's concern would be easily covered if you could mail stuff including gold to other characters on your account rather than having to use the bank for transfers.

You do know you can lock items and deposit them in the bank, right? When you're at a crafting station, they won't even show up in the deconstruct window. Also, after next patch, you will be able to improve locked items as long as the success chance is 100%.

Thanks for reminding me about locking items. I just think it's easier if each character has sole access to those items you are holding specific to that character. As it is, it's easy to forget to lock items routinely.

Actually there is a strong argument against it with the current justice system. I keep less than 5k per gold on each character. That way, if I am feeling like a criminal and get caught, I only can lose that amount. It's also a nice way to help you save gold if you deposit 5k into your bank every time you have more than that. I know people with insanely high bounties on one of their alts. If they would risk all their gold every time they got caught, they would not be happy.

Then you just suicide on a guard and pay the 50g repair cost. Bounty goes away when killed by guards (along with any stolen loot still on you.)

You've never looked at your coin purse after being killed by a guard have you? They take your bounty if they kill you.
