So basically you're upset and angry because of the RNG involved with crown crates.

 Sorry, but this isn't really news to anyone who has checked any information about the crown crates. Great for people who aren't desperate for a specific prize, and don't mind adding all the costumes, hair, spines, horns, whatevers to their collections. Bad for people who do want a specific prize. There are posts and youtube vids on how many crates you'll need to get the gems to buy what you want, if you don't get it in the crates.

I preordered Morrowind. I have the crate. I have no intention of opening it. I'm going to see whether CS can just delete it from my account.

These are my intentions as well.

I got some poo* in my free gamble crate... I was already against them, so no changes here. If ZOS wants my crowns they can have them, but I need to see what I'm buying.

    * some consumables + a low-quality costume I chose not to buy when it was available months ago. Not actual poo... that would have been amusing, if it was a housing item to leave by the stables.

Where does it say "free crown crate" exactly? It is unclear.

It says it comes with these bonuses, one of which is the Dwarven Crown Crate. It seems quite clear that it is included at no additional cost. It did not say the bonus was the "ability to purchase crown crates". It also clearly states there is a "chance" for it to contain various items. Nothing misleading at all.

The only surprise to me was that I could access the crate now. I had assumed I would have to wait till the crown crate season changed. It was only when people in guild chat were talking about it that I realized I already had it.

First off, I don't consider it free. In fact, I was rather impressed with the price of the pre-order if you take all these things into account. The crate, the pet, the costume as well as the warden and DLC. Now I think the collector's edition was for people with more money than... er, other stuff. Secondly, they are gamble boxes. It stands to reason someone gets something decent. I know I didn't. Doesn't change the fact they are gamble boxes. Mine reaffirmed my idea to never buy one so this was really a waste for them on my part. Its more akin to two envelopes were given out and both had the chance for that million dollars but only one actually had it. Could have easily been neither or both.

Moving away from the OP's point somewhat, "Free stuff" makes it seem all innocent and acceptable. I have zero issue with crown crates, have bought some myself, but there should never have been a "free" crate. It's obvious what they're doing. Exposing a lot more people to them unnecessarily.

I choose to buy crates because i can and can limit myself, but the entire point of any free bets is to reel people in that otherwise wouldn't put a single penny down had they not been offered a carrot on a stick. Ooooh here's what it feels like to open a crown crate.

Those who are opening one for the first time and win a prize of any great in-game value are the ones more likely to then go and a spend a helluva lot more. That's how gambling usually works.

And then ZOS makes more money and can put more resources into developing the game I play. I see nothing wrong with that, if someone can't control themselves then all the fault to them :)

Khajiit will explain one of her significant objections to these crates, gambling aside.

The best things in Tamriel can no longer be obtained in the store. Indeed the store has been noticeably poor since the crates appeared. Instead almost all of the desirable items are now in the crates only. We were told there would be crate exclusives yes but we were led to believe these would be the apex rewards. Now a very significant amount of items are crate only.

The design budget does not seem to be significantly going back into other areas of the game - it seems to be going right back into those crates!

The crates and the store have an influence on the design of the game. They do not think 'let's do this travellers will enjoy it'. They now think 'let's do this because we can make more money out of it'. Would housing crafting materials be so rare if not for the fact that most furnishings can be obtained more easily in the store for example?

There are several hats and hairstyles that this one would have paid crowns for. They are all crate ones though so unless older crate exclusives, not the apex stuff, starts coming into the store then they miss out on the shiny coins of khajiit.

I agree that it was a poor choice, but not for quite the same reason the OP gave.

For me it's more that even though I know for a fact that crown crates are deliberately designed to have absolutely horrible RNG which means the vast majority of them will never contain anything worth the price I still had that moment of thinking maybe I'd get something good from it.

Then I opened it and was let down. Even expecting that it was a disappointment.

If they'd just given me something I didn't want directly (as they did with the XP scrolls) my reaction would be neutral. But instead it's mild disappointment because of the way the crates are designed.

And in my case, and apparently a lot of other people's too if the drop thread is anything to go by it's doing the opposite of what ZOS clearly hoped and warning people away from the crates. I've even seen people in game (who apparently don't understand RNG) saying that they got so much worst stuff from their 1 dwarven crate than the 15 crates they bought previously that they've obviously been "nerfed" and they'll skip the dwarven crates and wait for the next lot before spending any money again.

If you pre-ordered Morrowind you get one free dwemer crate. Go into your game's collections folder or inventory menu and you'll see a line of icons at the top of the screen. Click on the Crown Crate icon and it'll give you one free crate to open.
