Free of charge RNG box, BAD IDEA

So you are bitter because someone else's free, random box contained something cool while yours didn't? o.0 Receiving a box with random loot does not promise any individual anything cool. Not you, not me, not the neighbours. If someone does get something cool, good for them. If not, tough luck. This is how RNG works.

Seeing someone else with a nice thing you could have had and throwing a tantrum because of it (be it through ragequitting, harrassing, ranting on the forums, etc.) is playground-politics and only works on seven-year-olds. Grow up, act your age, and be happy for someone else for a change.

    Edited to remove bait.

So, no. Not with you on this one.

(Seriously, the whole "interpret every single thing ZOS does as a direct attack on ME" thing is getting old. I'm just amazed that I haven't seen the phrase "a slap in the face" yet. /facepalm)

Yall just got DRAGGED by @Kiralyn2000 ...............

    drag

    verb
past tense: dragged; past participle: dragged

    1. pull (someone or something) along forcefully, roughly, or with difficulty.
"we dragged the boat up the beach"
synonyms: haul, pull, tug, heave, lug, draw; More

    2. informal
deliberately mention an unwelcome or unpleasant fact.
"pieces of evidence about his early life were dragged up"

    Damn.........lol

    couldn't say it any better.

that doesn't even apply here. We payed for those crates. we weren't gifted, we didn't win. WE PAYED FOR WHAT WAS ADVERTISED!

And what was advertised is a crate with "consumables" with chance at better items, and a very slight chance at an apex reward.

Did you get consumables? If the answer is yes, then you got what is advertised. NOWHERE does it say "Every crate will have an apex reward" Here's the original announcement: http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-gb/news/post/2016/11/29/eso-welcomes-crown-crates
Crown Crates are a new addition to the ESO Crown Store that will give you a chance to obtain exclusive and unique pets, mounts, and more alongside useful consumable items.

This Thursday, we'll be introducing the first season of Crown Crates to the ESO Crown Store. Crown Crates are purchased through the Crown Store, and contain a randomized selection of useful consumables and collectibles that are valued more than the price of a single crate. In addition, they also offer a chance to obtain unique cosmetic items, pets, or mounts. Crown Crates include new and exclusive items, as well as some items you might have missed in previous limited time offers.

Whenever you purchase a Crown Crate, you will always be awarded four items, with the chance to get a fifth item. In the event you receive a mount, pet, costume or personality that you already own from your Crown Crate, you'll be awarded a new resource - Crown Gems - in its place. You will also have the option to convert several items obtained from Crown Crates to Crown Gems any time you want. Items that can be manually converted include potions, poisons, riding lessons, experience scrolls, and other utility-type items. Any Crown Gems you earn can then be used to purchase the collectible items of your choosing from the current Crown Crate season.

The next announcement is where the "more items for the crates" creep starts. http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/2017/03/02/next-crown-crate-season-the-elder-scrolls-onlines-wild-hunt
In addition to the Apex rewards, we're introducing new content to the Superior, Epic, and Legendary categories, too.

Those who are opening one for the first time and win a prize of any great in-game value are the ones more likely to then go and a spend a helluva lot more. That's how gambling usually works.

@Prof_Bawbag Do you have any studies that support this? I can't find any evidence that the reward from the first "spin" will affect the chances of that person buying more...

I'm not here to recite the intricate nature of behavioural psychology to anyone and if you want the answers you're seeking, you look it up. ESO crates are nothing more than a pay to loot system which relies heavily on a randomised outcome (gambling), which like every other form of gambling can be addictive. People who are exposed to winning big on their first few tries of any sort of gambling are then more likely to think that's how gambling works, thus more likely to plough more of their finances into doing it again in future. That too is a well known feature of behavioural psychology. It's the reason gambling companies offer free spins, free bets etc to new customers. They seriously do not do this *** out of the goodness of their heart, they do it to expose more people to their business model.

It's all about getting people to become incentivised to spending money. You see this very thing a lot on here and elsewhere in gaming, so it's not as if ZoS are unique. "Meh, the last mount was 5k crowns, so this 3k mount isn't anything but a bargain. I'll take 2, please".

As for gambling and its effect on the human mind, it's a complex issue. Almost everything tied to gambling is there for a reason from those bright flashing lights on the fruit machines to those free spins.

It would be a lot more ethical of them if they listed the likelihoods for receiving the items per one crown crate.

Apex camel mount, likelihood x%, likelihood for apex horse mount, y% - etc.

In fact, I'm surprised they have not done so. But we know why they haven't.

Because that would discourage people from buying those crates.

When you spin a slot machine you have no idea what the odds are either. Of course some gambling you do know the odds, but usually only in games where the odds are dynamic and change for various reasons - but it stands to reason that they just don't tell us because we don't need to know. Anybody who's going to gameble is going to do so even though they know the house always wins. But actually with the current setup - unless you're only buy 5 crates at a time, ZOS is actually the one losing each purchase.

And no matter what anybody says - you get more for 15 crown crates than you will just spending 5000 crowns on individual things. Even if you don't get specifically what you want - chances are you're walking away with atleast 3 new mounts, 5 new pets - a bunch of consumables - costumes and more. This isn't some trick on ZOS part to rip you off, and never has been.

Anybody who says the gamble crates aren't worth tend to only want the Apex rewards or specific things. The Crates a great value if you aren't nitpicky. I bought 45 crates both seasons so far - first season I even got FIVE of the Apex mounts, only 1 this time around - but - I also got almost everything else available, short one crap costume and the other apex mounts.

From those 90 crates total - I now have like 20+ mounts and 20+ pets - that alone makes it meet the value. All the other stuff was a bonus. For 30,000 crowns I would have been lucky to buy 10-20 mounts and not get anything else lol

Dear God no. I have never heard of such a thing, a company giving something away to expose people to it in order to get some people to buy more. What kind of a disgusting business is this? Just get by without making money like every other successful business in the world.

Seriously though, get over OP. Find something legitimate to complain about. There is, and never has been, anything wrong with a company giving out a bit of free stuff to advertise a bit. It isn't as if they are forcing anyone to buy the crates, and if one free crate sets someone off to spend $1000s, then they had it in them all along, and would have eventually gambled their lives away in one form or another.

Let's all find more needless things to complain about, litter the forums with it, then cry when real issues are never dealt with.

No idea how it work elsewhere in the world, but here in the UK slot machines have to have a percentage return-to-player figure (% RTP) displayed. Albeit in a very small box located waaay in a corner that next to no one notices. Even if they did notice it, few people would be able to make head or tails of it.

Worked on me. I needed 2 more gems to cash in for something after opening my dwarven crate so I bought another crate and got some potions to cash in.

I'm not going to buy more than that because you really never get anything. I've never even gotten a mount which is why I'm baffled that people get mounts on their first open.

That must be less than a 1% chance for the apex mounts.

No, not really. Just like the other stuff that was included wasn't free. But "Free crate" sounds better than "included with purchase in the hope you'll buy more". The bonus items outside of the actual "game" are usually considered "free".

Most of the "free" stuff I will never use; my favorite mounts are not horses, I don't like pets following me around, and I'm not too sure I like the armor style, so its a good thing I bought the game for the game and not the "free" stuff that came with it.

And again, this was paid for. While I don't think the OP is correct, everyone saying they are free is wrong because if this was free, everyone would have gotten it. Its a gamble crate. Its what every upstanding business does. Do you own an iPhone? Well, it might interest you to know you just bought a ticket to win an iPhone and actually won. Sorry to necro the thread - but since I just got MW today, I had to come back just for this comment. How can it even be true when the Dwarven Crown Crates still aren't for sale for another 16 days... how are they going to rope people into buying more when they can't?

I guess they could buy some Wild Hunt ones, but that's just dumb if they want something something from the Crate type they just opened.

Anyway - let's see if my necro brings out some more tears from people who don't like free stuff handed to them.
