MAYBE I wouldn't consider it a rip off if you got more gems for duplicate crap, but come on, $300 and I didn't get what I was looking for, and still didn't have enough gems to buy it either?
Granted, perhaps RNG just wasn't on my side, but honestly, to put up real money for RNG? Not this cowboy. Im done wasting money on a rip off.
I'm just going to say this to everyone here: Don't blame the system for your lack of self-control. Gambling is just a leisure activity. A hobby, just like any other hobby. When you willingly choose to participate in the act of gambling, you accept the risk of not receiving ANY profit or preferred payout. Whining about it, as if it's the system's fault, just makes you look childish.
There is nothing inherently negative about the act of gambling. The major problem with gambling, is that many gamblers are poor losers.
I actually have no trouble with self control, addiction, or gambling.
I pretty much bought those 90 crates as a test, I just wanted to see if they would end up being worth it. My data gave me the conclusion they are a rip off. For anyone who thinks otherwise, more than welcome to have that opinion.
I was just posting my findings. I'm done with them completely, not because I'm a sore loser, but because the risk far outweighs any reward.

I am only still playing because I love the world and lore so much.
But if ZOS ever tears down the projects and puts up high priced condos in my tamriel, I'll be out. It sucks that to enjoy a TES game I have to do it under the crushing corporate jackboot of ZOS.

Your answer is reasonable. I just take issue with your use of the word "rip-off". Rip-off has an actual definition, it is not a compound word whose definition changes relative to opinion. To "Rip-Off" is the act of committing fraud or swindling. As both "fraud" and "Swindle" are also legally defined and measurable terms, you make a bold claim when you use the words "Rip-Off". Crown Crates are not a Rip-Off. They are exactly as advertised. A box that gives you a chance at a pool of items.
You may think the definition of Rip-Off is relative and opinion-based. You are 100% wrong.

What exactly is a wrip?
Shouldn't it be PARS or Positively Against Rip-off Stuff? I guess that is not as cool as PAWS, but it would be correct English.
@ThealteregoromanI can tell you who is the most excited for crown crates tomorrow.
The corporate executives of Zo$.
They are eagerly awaiting and drooling over the zounds of dollars they are going to make tomorrow. Each time you buy a crate just think about the big smile you are putting on their faces.
ok!
corporate executives of ZOS.....
FIXED IT FOR YOU

I mean, on one level I can understand why people are against the crates, but on another level I realize that ZOS has to make money on the game somehow now that subscriptions are no longer mandatory. Basically, they got rid of the mandatory subscriptions, but still have to make money SOMEHOW or else they won't bother supporting the game any longer, so they encourage people to buy from the Crown Store, and find ways to encourage people to want voluntary subscriptions. Honestly, it's better than being forced into a mandatory monthy subscription.
And I'm one of those people who like mystery grab-bags. So sue me.
The definition of rip-off is a lot less precise than you seem to think. Here's the definition from one source:PlaceboSoul wrote: »andreasranasen wrote: »In before the negative Nancys!

The marketing department on ZOS has succesfully ported the gamble crates from Star Trek Online.
You hope theres that shiny and rare thing inside but theres just the old rusty spoon in different shapes... When you have finally bought about 5 years worth of crates, you actually get the cool item you thought was so great.
Meanwhile, you eat dry vread and drink water because you just gave ZOS money to kmake more actual content.. Or more likely added to shareholders purse :P

I'm kind of excited - will be more excited if there's a crown sale soonOne can dream.
It would be nice to see one of these threads and not see people act like they are the worst things ever. Yes, it's gambling. For pixelated items. It's fun and as long as you're not spending rent money, who cares what others spend money on?

Nobody cares about what people do with their money. We who dislike the addition care that this behavior is enabling the game to go on the same direction that other MMOs we played went too, and we don't want the game to go this direction because it directly affects our enjoyment.
But it is like I said on my previous comment. A lot - if not most - of the opposition is because this is commonly a F2P transition strategy, meaning that it is something that is added before a game is converted from B2P to F2P. However, with the announcement of Morrowind and the fact that it didn't follow GW2's footsteps, meaning ZOS didn't decide to make the game F2P with the release of an Expansion Pack (this is important), we were able to calm down a little. At least it doesn't seem that ZOS will follow that dreaded path, for now. It can still happen if the Crates become their main source of income by a landslide, but it seems that we might have more time than we anticipated at first.
I still do not like them because of this risk, but so far I can breathe.

I think with the additions of chapters and the fact you have to pay for DLCs or a subscription they're making more money that way. Would be interesting to see the breakdown, actually - where their money comes from, et cetera.
