You can put crafting tables and a banker in them, that's not useless. If you can't afford those, you can use them to teleport to different zones and different alliances, and I've used this quite a lot, even with the freebie houses. Yes they could use more utility, but I'm getting a huge amount of fun with decorating and also visiting the houses of guild members in a housing guild that I joined. Definitely not a waste for me.

I know some are going to struggle to get their heads round this, but housing in MMOs isn't aimed simply at adding to players' storage slots. That may be a bonus in some games, but it isn't remotely what housing is about.

If players don't understand what the purpose of housing is in MMOs, then it's a safe bet to say that housing is not for them and they can save their gold/crowns. There are other ways of enhancing storage through increasing inventory and bank slots and if there's a genuine need for more storage other than to cater for the unreasonable expectations of hoarders then lobbying for those would hopefully be productive.
So, you would buy a house that you couldn't also store additional stuff in?

Because that's all your argument boils down to.

Of course, as I have done. Because having a house isn't about having additional storage - that was what my argument boiled down to.

That's assuming, of course, that we're not confusing storage slots with furnishing. I wouldn't necessarily buy a house that I couldn't furnish, but I don't buy houses in order to use them as inventory/bank overflows (and have never used them for that where the game has permitted it).
And the argument about why the Homestead update is so bad when placed in comparison to... every other MMO on the market is much deeper than just "storage" also.

A fact that you conveniently left out of your post.

I was commenting on one aspect that was being discussed, but as it happens I don't accept that it is "fact" that the update is so bad when compared to every other MMO on the market. The housing in LoTRO, for example, is awful.

The reason so many people like housing in MMOs is because it gives them somewhere to call "home". Somewhere to visit while resting up, somewhere to display stuff and show their friends who can visit. Somewhere they can exercise their creative talents. All things that can be done in ESO. Check out what people have already done in ESO, and check out what people have done in e.g. EQ2 and Rift. Some other things like crafting can also be achieved, and I've no doubt that storage will become an option later on too - but housing is about so much more than just that.

I can well imagine guild halls will become available in due course too, unless ZOS are wise enough to realise that when games like EQ2 eventually added guild halls to their housing system it totally destroyed the cities. But good luck getting 500 people into an individual player house in most other MMOs!

Just because you can't use the housing for what you want it for doesn't make it "useless vanity fluff" for everyone.

They're useless to me but useful to zos...look at all the posts about people burning crowns on homes. Then in about a month when the fascination wanes they'll unroll the next set of crown crates for people to burn crowns on. After that comes the $40 expansion and more crown items.
They're getting good at keeping the money flowing in.

Dude, TLDR much? And your replies too, wow...

But I like my house, it's nice to chill in and I like having the merchant and banker, the crafting stations to deconstruct items, make runes, potions and food. Eh, it makes me happy, so I like it.

Useful or not, I'm having fun decorating my home day by day as I gather furnishing plans. Even beyond that, constructing new structures to gain access to new spaces has really sparked my creativity. I am this close to seeing if I can minecraft up a statute from the various blocks.

    lol same.

A bit too long for me.

The real purpose of housing is to allow players to be creative and design their own cribs. That being said: it would be nice to have some functionality along with that. Additional storage options should have been included.

The free travel is nice as well.

This is the only reason I haven't bought a house despite all the hype. I more then likely will hardly visit after a bit of time when the novelty wears off and I won't be buying a huge manor or inviting people + no storage so seems useless.

Only thing I am interested in is a dps test dummy which could actually be helpful for me to test what rotations and gear provides best dps. But I already have friends with multiple dummies and have access to their homes.

In the end I will likely spend the gold on a house just for something to do and sink gold into. Won't take long and I will have millions of gold and I have already bought and tried every set I wanted to so it's the only thing I can spend my gold on.

I want to be able to post things to sell for my guild trader without seeing 100+ people just standing around a banker in a capitol.

Funny, I don't like dealing with people irl and it looks like it's the same in my video games.

While I would like player housing to have more useful things like storage, I do think there is some usefulness to them now. The option to have crafting stations including attunable stations, target skeleton, banker if you have it. These are useful because sometimes you want to do your crafting or banking in peace, not to mention how much less lag there is outside of town. And the target skeleton is great. So that's very useful

    Dammit, I voted wrong.

Yes, houses are currently useless. And, for me at least, they will be useless until I can display the actual items I've acquired in my adventures. Most of the things you mentioned might be nice, but none of them mean a hill of beans without the ability to display my armor, weapons, runes, glyphs, trophies, rare fish, reagents, potions, provisions, and various laundered nicknacks.

I don't doubt that they will add in the plethora of missing features in the future.

For an exorbitant premium in Crowns...

ZOS: "So, you guys want storage for your houses? We're on that! It's coming in the 2025 update, and for only 35,000 Crowns, PER HOUSE! What a bargain!!!"

The money grubbing and lack of design effort after ZOS hired "The Lady" is truly astounding...

While housing crown prices are high, unless you absolutely have to have something now, it's completely viable to to get your house via gold and build it up from there.

I like housing, but it's not something I have to have, nor do I spend any time trying to get one or have it furnished.

I estimate in six months I'll probably have a house. Don't care about storage, although having assistants and crafting stations at a home would be a convenience.

the only practical application for housing is a place to put the DPS dummy (this is a bigger deal for us console peasants than it is for the Lords of PC). Other than that, it is all RP and bragging that you bought a bigger house than your friends as far as I can tell.

@max_only So far I have not had anything be bound to me unless it was something from an achievement like the tanziel light thing that I went oooh blue light in the flavor text only to put the damn thing up and the light be yellow. I've been able to pick paintings back up and sell them in the guild store and recently just bought Humblemud (was the best cheapest house as everything from crafting to bank was right outside the door so I can save for a bigger one) and was able to sell the lights from within and anything else I didn't like. So as far as I can tell, achievement furnishings seem to be the only bound ones. I wouldn't be surprised though if there are super rare furnishings that are boe though or if the crownstore sets are boe. I haven't bought any of those to be sure sure.

    They are pretty useless.

They should allow you to access guild stores and banks through your banker when in home

Repair armor through merchant and buy items while in home.

    Store items

At the moment there is no reason to have it as a meeting place. Only reason I can think of is testing DPS.
