Does Heartwood seem scant?

Heartwood drop rates is absolutely equal to another furnishing mats drop rates. I've got all Homestead loot achivements one by one, almost at one day of farming.
The lack of Heartwood drops is just illusion caused by it's high demand in comparison to another decorations such as food, wells and animal skins.
One of the two of us definitely has gone mad. It only remains to define whether this one is the whole world or just me.

You say it like its a good thing. Why the hell people consider farming to be normal?? It's a f***ing MMO disease. You should get these resources by simply playing "normally".

I'd like to think that ZOS may have adjustments planned in the future and some of that might involve drop rates. As mentioned, I don't think the drop rate is much different than regulus, bast or mundane rune, but heartwood is just used so much more often. Alchemical resin does feel like it drops at a higher rate but perhaps I just harvest more flowers/mushrooms than other nodes and just now see it.

I think that large crafted items justify the big mat cost and I'm fine with most of those. I'd like to see smaller items require way fewer mats than what is currently used. An apple or small candle should be 1 - 2 of any given material. a chair maybe 2 - 4. A large table could be 10+ and huge carts and tents could be 20 or more of some materials. As an alternative perhaps add a skill line for furnishing that mimics elements of other skill lines. A passive that allows the crafting of 1/2/3 additional copies of an item per craft (like alchemy and provisioning) or one that increases your chance and number of furnishing mats harvested from nodes (like the CP passive for crafting mats) could go a long way to making the process a bit easier.

What do you mean "normaly"? Is it means that wood and herb mats should just fall into your pocket while you're running across the location from quest to quest?
Farming is a part of normal gameplay. And it's not an MMO-specific. Even in singleplayer RPGs you must find herbs you needed, loot it, collect some quantity to make what you want. I would say more, farming is a real-life aspect implemented in the game.

If merchant carts and other big items will require much more of mats than tables and chairs are, then noone will craft them and noone will buy them, imho.

I just said that I would so it's not "noone". At any rate the numbers I use are just an example. My point is that my opinion is that the size of the item should dictate how many mats are required and it does work this way but to a small degree. You say people won't craft large items if the cost is too high, but as of right now, I don't craft small items because the relative cost is too high. Why make a single candle when I could use those resources on a much larger item instead? The current system also uses recipe rarity to calculate the cost but I don't think rarity should contribute as much as it currently does.

In my opinion, it is too early to say whether the drop-rate for Heartwood (or any of the mats) is too low or not. Home Furnishing is afterall meant to be end-game content for crafters and as such, it is a long-term project for the dedicated and not to be equated with 'Holiday Event' type Achievements and material drops.

When update 13 launched, I was experiencing the same kind of problem - especially regarding Master Writ drops. That is slowly but surely changing (for me at least) since I changed tactics. For those interested, here is what I did.

I have one Main Crafter, who is maxed out in all 6 Crafts and she has all the necessary passives including Keen-Eye
    .
    1. All Design Patterns, collected by the other Chars, are placed in the bank for my Main Crafter.
    2. Instead of wasting thousands of gold on one or two Style-Chapters that were missing to complete 3 books, I invested c80K gold in buying up Design Patterns.
    3. She has bought every White Pattern she could find from NPC vendours. Most of these cost no more than 90g. I have seen Guild Merchants selling some of these for c500g.
    4. From Guild Merchants, I limited her spend to 1K per pattern max and stuck to it. They all count towards the "Known Design Pattern" Achievement so why pay more? My Crafter probably knows over 100 Design Patterns across the board. She has completed the "Known Pattern Achievement" in 2 of her crafts, I cannot remember which.
    5. She farms for mats in out-of-the-way places, that are not along the main Dolmen, Boss and Quest runs.
    6. She has discovered several areas (and particular nodes) that fairly consistently drop the desired mats.
    7. There appears to be a greater chance of finding furnishing mats by killing 'dangerous beasts' or 'mobs' than in the more quiet locations.
Since adopting this technique - three days ago - my crafter has gathered more than 100 mats in everything, except for Wax, where she needs c20 to complete the Master Wax achievement and Master Harvester achievement.

The drop and find rate of furnishing mats appeared to progressivelly increase with the progress of the Master Harvester achievements.

Gaining these Achievements has has a knock on affect on the drop rate for Master Writ drops from her 6 x Dailt Writs. For the first 11 days she had hardly any M-Writs but for the last 3 days there has been a steady increase in not just the number but also of the Voucher value. She is getting more 6 and 7 vouchers writs than 2 voucher writs and has had one worth 121 vouchers.

I presume the Known Pattern Achievement has had a bearing on her Master Writ drop and quality rate.

N.B. It may be a coincidence but she has found 3 or 4 Purple Design Patterns in Delves and Dungeons, a couple of paintings and epic household items as well.

I hope my findings so far are useful to everyone and that the techniques work for you. o:)

Made several adjustments to the places Decorative Wax can be found. These changes increase the overall availability of Decorative Wax, and make finding it a more consistent experience.
Decorative Wax now comes from a wider variety of sources, including insects and other chitinous creatures, wasp nests, barrels, urns, alchemy bottles, cabinets, cupboards, and backpacks.
Reduced the chance to obtain Decorative Wax from several sources that were dropping wax more often than intended.
Fruits, vegetables, and meats found in the world no longer have a chance drop Decorative Wax.
Plentiful Harvest no longer applies to furnishing materials found from the sources listed above.
Plentiful Harvest no longer applies to Clean Pelts.

    Okay...this doesn't look good <.<

Yeah, the drop rates for all furniture materials is abysmal. You can currently sell a whole stack of rubedite ingots for the same price as buying a SINGLE piece of heartwood from the majority of players.

this but zos will never increase drops for housing mats. And they nerfed decorative wax in today's patch. gotta kill bugs to get it now. further, it's been added to the "backpack" type containers to make things like recipes, etc even more rare. UN-effing-believable.

Um. I wish I screenshotted it, but I got 4 heartwood from one log. I get heartwood and bast just find. I got a stack of 200 gathered in a simple 2 hours of a farming. I don't know where you guys are farming, but either someone is going around taking only heartwood from the nodes (because you can do that), or you aren't farming in the right spots.

Guys - furniture is NOT for those who just want to fastly decorate their house like a "SIMs-style" game. You need to put some afford in it - which means farming, ingame-gold or money! I cant stand ppl, that want to plays mmoRPg like FPs shoters, where its all about everyone having all option from bginning and just play Endgame all the time. Where do you think is the sense of a long planed Update like this, when you can have all the stuff in just 2 weeks?

Some ppl (inlc. me) have extra farming builds to get a maximum mount of mats in short time - and so far i can report i gathered around 100 pieces of each of the new mats (ok no decore wax but thats a different story) in 1 week (maybe 1000 "normal" mats per gier). Use the CP-Skill, where you can get 10% on double mats - it's nice to find 4+ of these mats in one go...

Maybe they should add chances to get them from refining - but only in the max lvl of the refine skill - to promote Crafters even more ( =the ppl that should DO furnishing anyway)

It should be something special, to have a good furnished House to show to your friends - otherwise you could just play "The Sims" where furnishing is more like the main focus of the game... (and its even more classy to tell you got them on your own and not by "I just cant wait"-crownstore-offers.

    Cheers

Furniture mats need to drop from surveys. I saved many, many surveys before the update and was very disappointed to see that it was for naught.

Alternatively: make the furnishing mats a product of refining raw mats, like trait stones and tempers. Solves the problem of people leaving robbed nodes behind while farming and makes the process less frustrating.

I've had better luck in not so busy areas. Alik'r desert is pretty good. Especially when it comes to bast. There are LARGE areas of the map that I will very rarely see another player or not so often see another player.
As for heartwood and clean pelts I don't do so well in that zone and have as of yet found a decent place.

The one thing that I think is wrong with the new furniture crafting mats and how they are obtained is that Heartwood is not more common than the other materials since it will be required in much higher quantities than the other materials for the all things that people will clearly craft the most often (tables, chairs, tents, counters, beds, benches, bookshelves, armoires, etc.).

That's my thought. It's used a lot more so it should drop at least a little more.

Meanwhile, since my heartwood is much more valuable to sell as a mat than as furniture, instead of furnishing my manor, I put up a large Khajit tent with a bed roll and a candle by the waterfall. I think it'll stay that way for a while.

Baffles me too, maybe some players feel like the game is their life and by 'working' through unpleasant activities they feel warm inside? I don't know :s

As many said, I don't want instant gratification (I'd buy everthing with crowns in that case). But this is a game, one should be rewarded by doing fun things, with different difficulties and rewards yes, but FUN. No one wants to come home just to spend ALL their free hours farming like a bot.

on furn mats from refining - is there any other case where you can get an extra from the node harvest itself AND refining?

do you ever pick up a log of raw ruby ash and find resin as well?

Heartwood has the same drop rate as everything else (except the wax which is plentiful if you are willing to do a bit of stealing). The reason why it feels super rare is because it's used in so many things. Same trouble with the Mondane runes.

No, it does not drop with anywhere NEAR the frequency. I farmed mats for 3 hours today, and ended up with *17 heartwood*. By contrast I got 31 alchemical resin, 49 regulus, 25 bast, and 40 mundane runes.

It's ridiculous, especially since almost all furniture recipes ask for a lot of heartwood. ZOS, you have to up the drop rate this is unacceptable.

The drop rate for all mats is ridiculous, as you can see, but heartwood - OMFG. It really sucks the joy out of a new feature, when you have to grind this hard to make any use of it.

All the drop rates are acceptable. Everybody's usage is eventually going to taper off to the point where finding 10-12 a day is more than enough.

But somebody needs to patch in a better way to find all the furnishing ingredients in guild stores. The base UI isn't pulling them when I know they're there, and AGS isn't finding them with keywords.

Sorry! not true. Hardwood drop-rates are way behind other item drop-rates.
Tested it out myself. Counted the nodes found and harvested.
Hardwood - in average 20 or more nodes to harvest before finding any hardwood
The worst was 50+ failures to 1 success.

Now, either I am extremely unlucky
    or
someone just harvested the hardwood and left the rest behind (unlikely)
    or
    Bots harvest Hardwood specifically (maybe)
    or
ZOS wants us to buy certain furnishings with real credits (extremely likely).

The lack of Hardwood harvest (in my opinion) is by design and honestly (in my opinion) a
    very shabby move by ZOS.
