    ESO has 8.5million copies sold.
COD Black OPS 3 had 25.68 miliion
COD Infinite Warfare. Which is a terrible game sold at levels about 50% of black ops 3. So about 13miilion.
A game that Activision Blizzard acknowledges was crap sold more copies in a couple months than ESO has in almost 3 years.

Unfair comparison though.. its marketed to a different audience for starters.. and Activision have almost unsurpassed expertise at gouging every last cent out of a franchise.

    I.e. Skylanders.

It's very accurate. Same ppl who play console COD can also choose to play ESO.

It's good data to point out the reality that this game isn't doing that well in terms of sales but it's doing better than the forums suggest is all

That still bring up the idea that approx 500k-1 mil max play on each platform

    That's not a lot

LOL where are you getting your figures?

Can't find any posts suggesting ESO is going to die any time soon..
large revenue and still broken in places equates to frustration, which we do see consistently on the forums.

You would think with 8.5 million players they wouldnt have to keep raising the price on things. What did everyone do? buy it on sale and never purchase another thing?

I'm one of the people in that statistic, because I've only been playing for a couple of months.

Very happy. I want this game to last for a long, long time. The more players there are, the more money ZOS will make, which means more DLC and more free updates.

There's no denying this game has had an incredible turnaround since the beta and early release which was pretty much universally panned, but you also have to consider that this makes a big difference:

"This number is based off of units sold and is not simply a tally of registered accounts."

So this doesn't mean there's currently 8.5 million accounts registered and people playing. You have to imagine a lot of people bought the game when it was on a mega sale of 50%-75% off, played for a bit, then stopped.

Still, it's an impressive number, and I can only see it growing come Morrowind this June.

If you bought the game and logged in,that's still 8.5mil accounts. Active or not,the account is there.

There isn't much they can do other than get rid of General discussion or require a sub to post.....anyway It's really just the same handful of people, they get perma banned from the forums and they run out and buy a new copy.....at least that's what my nutter neighbor that lives a few blocks over does. He's convinced ESO is preventing the arrival of TES 6.

Things like this is why I'm not vocal about gaming as a hobby. :|

ESO didnt have a General Discussion for quite a while when the game first came out. Would you like to know how the playerbase reacted to that? They made their own by hijacking another sub that had nothing to do with general discussions.

Now if you go back a year the eso is dying was pretty common. The forums actually stopped me from returning
Currently its complains about real issues, yes its also a lot o pettiness.
Current paranoia is that ZoS will start to sell permanent emperor buff in the cash shop or something :)

Understood. I'm as much too blame as anyone.
The population has never looked to me like it was decreasing, approaching death. rip

Personally. It is mostly PVP related in my opinion.
I have maybe spent 6hrs playing this current(?) campaign from day 1 and been playing the actual game and I have been enjoying it a lot. I cannot wait for Morrowind.

But ... isn't ESO dying?? 8.5 million copies sold? That can't be right because people on these forums say it's dying!

I don't think anyone is saying it is dying. I think more people are complaining because it sucks as a mmo and fair as a single player RPG. And it's buisness model is highly predatory, with little longevity to what you pay for

Look around on the forums for people saying the sky is falling and its dying.

Predatory business model how? Genuinely interested to know how you think it's predatory. It's the same kind of setup as all B2P mmo's out there with no pay to win armour or weapons in the cash shop. Basically just cosmetics. And if you're talking about Morrowind talk to WoW players who are forced to sub to play and have to pay for expansions.

As an mmo it was never the most standard of mmo's. it's not WoW or GW2 etc. I would certainly like to see more group content, absolutely but it's kept me entertained for over 3 years.

Gloom clouds gonna gloom cloud eh?

no im not talking of Morrowind i actually think it is a good decision, I am talking about double dipping the content, Reselling of old DLC's with cosmetics that cant be aquired in game, im talking about pay walling game features like inventory management behind a sub yet calling the game B2P, I'm talking about starting as sub , going B2P to appease the microsoft debacle , redesigning the game to appeal to the gullible new to MMO market. im talking about making all these single player DLC's with no longevity and selling them for a premium cost while doing nothing for the community that actually plays the whole game while subbing. Yes their business model is predatory you just chose to ignore it.

That's the point of it all

One perspective ....or check tuesday for sales on For Honor and include both PS4 and Xbox One or a game like GTA V

I had to use a roundabout way to get numbers for COD infinite warfare because I can't seem to find a direct sales figure. They only quote the decrease in sales vs Black OPs3. That's the advantage of a publicly traded company; the president can't lie to shareholders. They can misdirect, but a lie would put them in legal trouble. Something Zenimax has no concern with because they are a private company.

You're ignoring that Infinite Warfare was on sale for $1 as well.

The base ESO game is $13 rn. That's probably the best deal for a ftp mmo on the market, and we are still at only 8.5million copies sold.

1.5 million box sales in 8 months? Even if none of them played for more than an hour, those are extremely impressive numbers for a 3-year old MMO.

I used to spend a lot of time on Sims forums, and people there were exactly the same. With every new change, they'd flood onto the forums to scream that the game sucks and is dying, and there'll never be a sequel to what they're playing now, etc. etc. I suspect every game forum is the same.

Definitely cynical, and I'll rounded up for simpler math, but...

Roughly equal across all platforms. So, 9mil divided by 3 is 3mil and a peak Steam logon of 30k is only 1% of that 3mil.

I don't think ESO is dying by any means, but it's just an odd way to look at the situation.

The people I know all have 2 or more copies of the game. I own 3 myself (for me, my wife and one I accidently got due to pre-order mixup)

Not to be negative though. The more people the better for the game. I have played the last year of Vanguard which had between 300 and 500 players active. And it was really hard to get anything done at lower level. No players is no fun in an mmo.
ESO does not have that problem at all.

With the launch of "chapters" and the Homestead update, ZOS is exactly like EA and Activision Blizzard. They have managed to pry every cent they can out of the players with no real intention to fix the problems.

they are getting there, but still not even remotely close...

its clear to me you haven't got young children... let me explain :)

"Daddy, can I have this Skylanders Swap Force Starter Pack for Wii?"
    "How much is it?"
    "$15"
    "Yeah Why not"

    Fast forward 2 days.

"Daddy can we buy more Skylanders, I need an earth element to swap with a fire element character to open this level gate?"
"OK which ones do you need?"
"I need Grilla Drilla and the Fire Kraken"
"Hmm they're $19 each little dude"
    "But I need them..."
    "OK"

    Fast forward 2 hours.

"Daddy can we go back to EB Games i need to get more Skylanders"
"OK But we're buying preowned ones this time alright.."
    "OK"
"Oh look daddy I dont have this one, or this one, or this... or this.. or this... or this... or this... or this... or this.. or this... or this... or this... or this..or this.. or this... or this... or this... or this.."
"But dude this one has a green base.. this is from Spyros Adventure and we don't have that game"
    "Can we get it?"

    *pile grows* ... ka-ching ka-ching... $150 gone...

    "Hey Daddy!"
    "Yeah dude?"
"Look they've got preowned Skylanders Trap Team! Can I have that!"
    "I guess, its $20"
"Oh but you need the trap masters to open the gates, and you need the traps to trap the villains, and the Swap Force characters can't open them"

Wallet out again.. Activision be like... ka-ching ka-ching ka-ching ka-ching

Fast Forward 6 Months, In that timeframe we have acquired every Skylanders Game. We have spent in excess of 100 hours searching for various Skylanders we didn't have in preowned tubs at game stores and online.

We switched consoles when he broke the Wii, so had to buy the games and portals all over again for Xbox 360 because guess what. Not compatible between platforms. We have also acquired almost every Skylander in existence except the extremely rare chase version ones that fetch an absolute fortune. I've managed to acquire a few of those but they do not come cheap at over $150 each and as such remain sealed in their boxes up high away. Forbidden fruit.

We would be down somewhere around $4000-$5000 so far. I've lost count.. it's scary.

Trust me, Activision are the absolute masters of gouging - and in the worst possible way, doing it via your children (which puts them firmly into the scum class with Disney and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment).
