Should we be able to keep one arm free in combat?

Over the time I have played ESO, I have noticed one thing...that some NPC's (enemy or otherwise) will wield a dagger/sword/whatever in one hand...and keep the other arm free.

I've done some research, and I've seen many other games allow for "one-hand-free" weapon-wielding styles.

Granted, I can see that keeping a shield is effective, but not everyone likes a shield (or can wield one, as is the case with other games).

So, would you be in favor of a skill line where you only use one hand and keep the other hand unarmed?

A one handed skill line with stamina, magicka morphs and passives that increase mobility. But sacrificing overall damage.

You know what, I was going to go with "are you insane" and point out the numerous complaints about balance etc and the strain that this extra skill line would bring - but then I thought ... sword, maybe dagger in one hand, spellbook in the other? Sort of classic and would be a nice addition to the staff me thinks.

So, since there is no "other" I can't vote *sniff*.

Oh, this is what this is about.

It boils down to, creating another category etc and balance and some people like, some people don't.

I thought this was gonna be a reference to fighting with, "one hand tied behind my back"

They could add a 1 handed "finesse" skill line or something. The attacks are based on precision. I'd love to see an unarmed skill line.

      I'm also in this category.

      I absolutely hate dual wield.
It would be nice if we could use 1 weapon and chose either the DW or S&B line for it to represent.

If there was a one-handed option available, then I think you should be able to equip a magical item in your other hand to augment it (more uniquely than enchantments). Perhaps one could make the blade function similarly to the Bloodskal Blade (Skyrim's version of course, Morrowind's was rather simple). I think that this would increase variety in stamina and magicka builds substantially.

      I'd accept all of those.

I personally think unarmed should be the next skill line added.magica builds could be minor healer/dps and stamina build could be minor tank/dps.They could play filler roles in dungeons. I imagine orcs, nords and khajiit would be naturally talented fighters.

It would require some strong passives to balance it out. Two Hander and Dual Wield will have their raw damage output roughly balanced out in Update 13. One hand and Shield gives you another armor piece. So opting out of either more armor of half of your damage output would be a big chunk without something putting in to bring it back up.

Traditionally, people with one hand empty in battle were a sign that they had been unprepared. Archers caught by melee troops and desperately grabbing an backup shortsword to defend themselves. Nobles caught when they weren't expecting trouble, and only had their longsword and no armor.

Because anyone who could, did something with their offhand back in medieval battles. A shield for extra defense. A two-handed grip on a larger weapon for extra power. An offhand weapon for more flexibility. Or a throwing knife, axe, or whatever for a bit of a one-shot ranged greeting...

One handed fighting styles grew later, from honor duels, and during times when armor had already been sent to a decline by advances in firearms, or the need to keep one hand free to grab a pistol and use that firerarm yourself. Musketeer and pirate era stuff (pirates often needed that offhand free to grab a rope, because they preferred not to go overboard all the time methinks). And even they did -something- with their offhand if they got in a fight outside honor duels. Grab a flintlock. Draw a main-gauche. Or even just wrap your cloak around your offhand as makeshift shield against light rapier blades... (not that this was an option in ESO due to lack of cloaks...)

But tamriel is medieval-tastic, and back there one-handed fighting really was more of a last resort, since even the medieval honor duels were fought in full armor (until the late medievel periods). And the one-handed fencing style blades from much later periods usually doesn't measure up quite as well against heavy medieval weapons and armor... (can be quite effective against unarmored enemies though, unless they grab your little rapier and bash their broadsword through your chest - yes, some have seen Rob Roy... but as Arya found out in GoT, slim fencing blades just don't have the power to get through armor, which is a distinct disadvantage in a fight for your life I would say)

      That all being said...

There are -two- logical reasons for sort-of one halded styles in ESO we don't already have.

One-handed and some throwing weapons in your offhand. Like the javelin throwers in orsinium!

One-handed and casting spells with your offhand. Like... classic spellsword stuff.

Sorry, but this is just stupid. Why would one keep entire hand empty is beyond me. You can go with more damage if you equip one more one handed weapon/use other hand to wield 2h weapon instead, or have more survivability by using a shield.

Same would be if you asked should we use only one leg for moving around.

Btw, if you use only one weapon, game counts it as s&b, if the weapon is equiped in main hand.

It's a matter of personal preference... some people like me dislike dual-wielding or twohanded weapons and sword & board would force us into a tank role. Therefore we want an alternative...

The only thing that I can think off is just a new weapon skill line for "hybrid" or just magicka based builds. This skill line could be just use stamina based weapon in one hand and magicka based skill in anther. Or just have morphs that enable weapon to scale with magicka. Yeah it sounds... weird I know. But with proper balancing this could actually be good.

btw. What surprises me is that there are no "one-handed" magicka based weapons. There are only 2h resto & destro stuff. That is fine - because they are ranged weapons. But stamina based build have both - 2h bow for distance fight and 1h, dw, 2h weapons. What I mean is there are no close-range magicka based weapons.

Not to mention set bonuses - stamina based builds have one extra slot for set bonus (dw & 1h&S).

Plenty of NPCs fight with a single weapon in ESO, I don't see a reason that this shouldn't be allowed for players. I'd be fine with a second 1h & shield option that is less aimed at tanking and more at DPSing/debuffing.

yes, in fact there should be a one-handed skill tree considering in the trailers the Green lady uses a one-handed sword and casts magic with the other and the Breton hero can switch between one-handed and dual wield.
