I hate trading. Easily my least enjoyed activity in Tamriel. I have no intention of ever bidding on a Guild Trader.
Yet I just realized I don't even know how people know when to bid on them. Do you just remember it from Natch Potes past? I seem to recall they changed the flip-over time.
How long do you have between when they "become available" for a bid and when the bidding is closed. I seem to recall friends camping out at 4 AM to bid on a trader like there was a 10 second window, like trying to buy concert tickets the moment they go on sale.

Hires of unbid traders (and bids for the upcoming week) are opened 5 minutes after trader flip.

And since it is closed bidding, there is absolutely no need to bid last minute ...

At one time people did because everyone in the guild could see the bid... So spies and stuff. Now only those members with trader hire privileges get to see the bid. At least before it's hired. At one time people did because everyone in the guild could see the bid... So spies and stuff. Now only those members with trader hire privileges get to see the bid. At least before it's hired. So no need to rush.
That's incorrect. Anyone can still spy on the bid amount. All they need is to track the guild bank's balance. Since you can see the bank balance and since every transaction except for the bids are in public view, it's just a matter of calculating the discrepancy between the bank balance and what can be accounted for by the transaction log. There's even an addon that makes this trivially easy. ZOS needs to restrict the view of the bank balance in order to actually stop bid spying.
Restricting the view of the bid transactions merely shields a casual player from seeing the bids, but those are also the players who don't care about them in the first place. Anyone who wants to bid spy will not be deterred by this paper-thin veil and will continue to bid-spy.
I've heard accounts of bid spying still happening from the GMs of some Rawl/Mournhold guilds, and I know that many GMs still do last-minute final bids as a result.Nightfighters ― PC/NA and PC/EU
