Would You Still Play If There Was No Grind?

As a common theme in this game, you are basically forced to grind for end-game gear. While dealing with ridiculous varieties of RNG. The supporting arguement to this is often said that people wouldn't play, if there was no need to grind. So I'm curious. Would you still play ESO, if there no grind for end-game gear?

I voted yes, because having the gear I want means I can actually go about doing more things that I want. Instead of spending the time farming and grinding, and not really getting done what I'm grinding the gear for to begin with.

I kind of ignore the grind. At any given time I play what I feel like playing when I feel like playing, on the character I feel like playing. Occasionally that will mean that I'll focus on certain content for a while, but with very few exceptions that's not about grinding for gear or anything, it's typically because I want to do that content.

For example, when One Tamriel was about to drop I decided I wanted to get at least 1 decent set of Mother's Sorrow. That drops in Deshaan. Well, lucky for me I've got a number of characters who haven't yet done the Deshaan content, and it had actually been many months since I'd done anything in Deshaan on any character. So I went and did the whole zone on one character who still needed it, and got most of my Mother's Sorrow stuff that way. The rest of what I wanted came from other characters going and doing some stuff in Deshaan (but not the entire zone - I didn't need to). I guess technically you could call that a grind for gear, but really it was just me going and playing some content that I had kind of wanted to play anyway - I just happened to prioritize it higher because some gear that I wanted dropped there.

Once "the grind" is out of the way I focus on more fun stuff.

Though, typically, I don't grind for stuff.

Many shooters have added a grind of some sort, even if just for titles, emblems, and side upgrades. Having a goal which is ultimately what a grind functions as, has been proven to be psychologically motivating.

The bold part is definitely true. Personally I don't find the goals artificially set by most grinds to be ones that I'm interested in or that motivate me, but I understand their purpose and how they have that effect for others. And for that matter, some grinds actually do motivate me, it's just uncommon. Most of my goals in video games are silly ones that I set for myself rather than ones set by a grind in the game.

I play ESO with my beloved. I love the world, but I'm here, sharing it and exploring it with him.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Im gonna over generalise but MMO=grind

lets be honest, once youve done somthing once, you generally dont want to have to go and do it again if there is no reason to do it, its the grind that keeps people coming back.

Every MMO ive played since Ultima Online had me hooked cos at the end of the grind there was reward and I knew there wouldnt be too many people with the reward that i'd spent forever trying to achieve and it would put you one step ahead lets say.

If it was faceroll craft whatever you want whenever you want for no materials, nobody would play, be serious ha.

I often hear this crap that when someone finally gets the gear they want, they stop playing. Seriously? That's like saying when you finally buy a house you don't live in it or when you buy a nice car you don't drive it. Maybe I'm different than the 'grinders' but when I get the gear I want I go to Cyrodiil and fun with it, or, just enjoy running around the game devastating everything in my path. There is nothing fun about grinding or an unrewarding loot system.

if there was no grind for cp, for gear, i would gear my toons, and play as i wanted when i wanted rather then burn myself out. constantly trying to gear up ect. when games force me to grind for months to gear 1 toon, sure they get a lot of play out of me in a month, but eventually i get bored and tired of the game and quit it.
