    Casual:

That guy who lewts every crate and sack in the dungeon.
The tank and healer duo that Don't lead the way, but seem to linger behind.
The guy using a console controller.
    Anyone with an accent.
    Anyone with a child.
Anyone not a child nor rich.
That girl the guild seems to worship and give free stuff.
That guy who refers to "daedra" as demons, and calls a daedric Titan a dragon.
That group of people that never ever consider soloing anything in pvp.
The people that ask you for a PC (price check) on everything in their inventory.
The people that have 8 lvl 20 characters.
The people that don't know what a mule is.
The people that look up meta builds every patch and just go with that.
The people that perch up on ledges and spawn points in IC.
The person that disappears 2-3 weeks at a time.
    etc...

non-casual is a much much shorter list

Casual: You have fun playing a game casually.

Hardcore: You do everything possible to get every advantage you can while playing as much as possible.

Please note that neither of these actually make you "skilled". There are plenty of very good casual players and plenty of hardcore players who only live to complain on the forums because their uber-build wasn't as effective for them as it was in a highly edited YouTube video.

I disagree. I'd call myself a casual but I can play like an addict for many hours getting absolutely lost in what I'm doing. I just don't play 'efficiently' (doing only what gives me most XP or gold), and I don't see the game as a competition with other players. I think it's not necessarily what you do and how good you are but why you're doing it.

Healer char that can heal a group through a dungeon or trial? check
Tank char who can stay alive and maintain aggro? check
    Casual player? check

A casual is a player who plays the game for enjoyment.
They may not have the min/max set and tweaks but they also play a few times a week.

They often won't be in any hardcore guilds or hardcore groups
They may be on 3 days this week and 0 to 1 next week.

Here's what wanna be elite players say which is not a casual and has nothing to do with a casual player.
    -wanting everything given to them
    -wanting easy content
    (Insert many other rude assumptions)

I'm a casual and know more about the game and how to play than some who play 6-7 days a week for 3 or more hours a day.
None of that matters, casual is just more so how often they don't play and what they do while playing.

Casual plays the game for fun.

Hardcore plays the game to get the best stuff and the best numbers and to be the best.

No need for long-winded explanation here.

Has it ever occurred to ANYONE that maybe hardcore players have FUN playing the game that way lol. Amd that for us one shotting everything is beyond boring.

as I understand it, elite or hard-core player is for me a player, that spends most of his/her free time playing the game, levels 8 or more chars to max CP, does end game content and is running the best min/max build

while a casual player is for me a player, who does not have so much free time to play every day and plays only few hour a week

this has been a can of worms since WoW was launched, and MMOs became mainstream. In my past mmo no one was labled hardcore or casual. It was elitist, and everyone else. It wasn't untill roughly 2008 did i start seeing "i'm casual". This was formally people who play roughly an hour or so, or 5 hours over the weekends. Players who are not big time gamers* but wanting to try them out, but play lightly.

Casual games are typically candy crush, tetris, bejeweled. Games about playing vs winning or loosing.

Now a days it is so over used, it lost its meaning. People use it as an insult now, the same with calling hardcore gamers "no lives who live in mommies basement." again not something i heard till 2008.

Elitist was at a time the only insulting lable, as it meant someone who thought they was TOO good, and everyone is beneath them. More often then not said players sucked as they didn't play well with others.

To me casual and hardcore are just petty lables, nothing to ware as a badge of honor or shame. We are all gamers playing a game. I don't think anyone should be insulted for personal taste, and play time. As long as you are enjoying the game, who cares?

    edit:
The concept of "play for fun" is idiotic, everyone plays games for fun. Fun is a subjective term, your fun may not be the same as my fun. Some people just are more serious, which it is there right to do so. I'll to this day will never understand why people say : " I'm a casual, i just play to have fun" when another person asks them to step it up when doing higher tier content. The same applies to overwatch.. people are going batshit crazy over blizzard choice to add 1hero limit to quickplay mode. the "casual i play for fun" people hate the desision.

I have a question, to those people who say "i'm casual, i play for fun" what is that supose to mean?

I'm a hardcore gamer, my main enjoyment is playing video games second to watching youtube and anime. Most of the anime i watch is gamer related. When i play games, i play to enjoy, master and win, that is my fun. I may not be a theory crafter, or a person who mix/maxes (used to in solo rpg and ended up dying more so i stopped), I may not follow the meta, but i do take content serious enough to give it my all. I don't get upset at death, unless it was a petty death. If i die, i own up to my mistakes and get better.

to me "i'm casual, i play for fun" seems more like an excuse not to take it serious enough, and to not play well. Which does screw over the people you play with.

    If it isn't please elaborate.

    ^^^ This!!

Casual... I don't spaz if my dropped helm doesn't have the perfect trait. I play when I want to, and I spend more time dying my outfits than I do farming for them.

I like some RP aspects, and play PC, usually with chat bubbles enabled so I can "overhear" the zone chat. Most of my characters have their own mounts (because ... they would).

Cannot stand "speed runs", my blacksmith likes to loot all the weapon racks (even on a random undaunted that he has done a billion times before); though most of my other characters don't care so much.

Broken Branch Toothmaul really really really likes the pumpkin disguise hat from the Witches Event ... any horrible hat really.

I have a habit of eating some jubilee cake after the witches brew 'cause you need something sweet to get rid of that horrible taste.

I've been playing two subbed accounts since shortly after PC launch... and not a one of my characters has 60/60/60 in riding skills. Yet.

    I play most days.

I used to range across the whole world and now I am stuck in one zone waiting X minutes for the bosses loot to reset. Weee!

I encourage you not to lose sight of the fact that YOU choose your actions.

I know there are people who "log on daily just to do writs and train their horse". I did that for a week before I started hating the game.

Play the game in a way that will bring you enjoyment. If what you are doing is not fun - do something else.

I can only define "casual" as it applies to me personally:

    - "I play for fun." What that means to me is a way to relax. To unwind. Not as work. Not as a chore. Not as something serious that requires stress and overthinking as if it's important or effects real life in any meaningful way (though I respect if it's the opposite for you). It's just a game to me. I don't care if I lose or die. I don't care if I don't get a specific piece of armor or if my stats/cp aren't PERFECTLY spread.

    - Not competitive. I don't care about PVP. I don't care how I stack up to other players, their strategies or their way of doing things, even when it's statistically "better" than my own way. To do otherwise would conflict with the first one.

    - As a distraction most of the time. Gaming to me, is not serious business. It's just another thing to do that incidentally brings me joy and enjoyment and mental stimulation.

    - Sometimes as a way of socialization. But I've always been more of a quiet solo player. As a lot of time having to coordinate with others can reduce the fun and enjoyment. But sometimes, I can also very much enjoy other people as part of the experience, but that heavily depends on the kind of people being socialized with.

    - Nothing really upsets me. Like at all. I see a lot of rage on these forums about almost every aspect of the game, and for me? It just doesn't matter to me, because despite any short comings in the game, it still provides me with a sense of enjoyment.

    - I don't play constantly. Not only because I have ADHD, but I go through "game cycles" where I can play a game for months, then find something else to immerse in for months before remembering that a game even exists.

That is what "casual" means as it pertains to me personally.

Me! I am totally a casual player. :)

Yesterday my husband and I spent almost eight hours wandering around Cyrodiil (me with the Stamplar I have been talking about fixing for three of those months) as various guild members joined and left the group, because after four months of avoiding PvP we decided it was time to make PvP fun again. (I spent a lot of time dead in Grahtwood trying to figure out how to rez myself with nothing but the Cyrodiil respawn menu, but the rest was a blast, and we even befriended a low level quester from a different faction.)

Today we took a five man group to Craglorn to try out some of the group quests on my healer. We did all the quests twice because the group delves are limited to four people. I got one Champion Point and tons of gear to deconstruct and it was so much fun we are doing it again next week.

Tuesday I am running our guild's weekly Tuesday Trials, where we take anyone interested through one of the (normal) Trials to teach mechanics. As long as each person has a good attitude, does their best to fulfill the role they signed up to support, and has fun while also encouraging the fun of others, anyone can participate. (Priority given to those over level 50, of course, as they are the ones who benefit the most). This week is Sanctum Ophidia. Maybe I will get a piece of the Infallible Aether my healer needs for her eventual veteran Trials setup. Maybe not. It will be fun either way.

Maybe I will run veteran White Gold Tower again sometime this week. I do need one last piece of Divines for my SPC, and our other healer needs the practice with the Inhibitor's portals. Maybe I will organize a strong group for veteran Imperial City Prison, I know our tank wants to add the helm to his collection and I would love to start collecting the Leeching set. I will definitely run veteran Vaults of Madness at some point, because it is my favorite, the scenery is stunning and the mechanics are fun and everyone (including me) wants the Worm set for something.

I will probably run some random normals on various characters, do a few PUGs to hunt for interesting newbies to recruit to the guild, and various and sundry other actions that mostly involve talking and getting into situations where I am teaching new things to others while at least half-carrying them through places they never thought they would beat.

I surround myself with people with hardcore goals and casual attitudes to get there "eventually, but no rush"... Just like me.

I am Casual and I love it.
