Yup. And that is why people go to a casino.
That is not generally at the top of the list for why people play RPG games.
And like someone else mentioned; the lady ZOS hired to manage this aspect of the game, has a trail of dead MMO's behind her on her path here.
Every MMO that has instituted similar methods of gambling-for-profit through RNG packages for real money, has gone P2W shortly after, and regular content releases (DLC) has slowed to a crawl as more and more development time goes towards creating nothing more than... shiny turds to go in those "crates".
No MMO has survived moves like these in their cash shops. None.
Haha, that was me. Her LinkedIn profile was quite the read as well. I won't name her here because they'll shut the thread down, but it's quite a damming resume if you're a person who can't stand the way those f2p/p2w "games" do business.
You can be as excited as you want, but you are dragging down the community with your misplaced enthusiasm. Gambling boxes might be OK for a sleazy, low-quality free-to-play game, but they have no place in a AAA title which heretofore had never offered a gambling service, nor did the community ask for one, nor would it conceivably benefit the playerbase compared to preexisting marketing strategies.
The reason gambling boxes are so bad, and which apparently you don't seem to understand based on your comment history, is that you are no actually guaranteed any specific item, no matter how much you spend. That's a mathematical fact, and completely incontestable. So even if you're spending literally millions of dollars on the gambling boxes, there's a chance you'll never get even one of the mounts you want, let alone ones from different gambling box types. This is a complete divorce from what we normally expect and actually want from a cash shop. We want specific items at a set price so that we can:
- Know what we're getting
- Know how much we're paying for it
If you don't like fair trade and ethical market dynamics, maybe this isn't the community for you.

I have no issues with buying items I want. Yes, I got the Imperial edition so I have the white horse, digital download so I could start playing at early access. I have the Collector's edition and a second account as well. My coworkers are still trying to figure out Molag Bal's figurine on my desk at work. They aren't gamers. I also have the tiger, clouded leopard, leopard leopard, black panther, and lioness. Senche are my pokemon, apparently. I think a guar got in there somehow too; I think I got it when I made a dunmer character. I buy mimic stones for my crafter. I just picked up the cat mask and the grim harlequin motif. The main difference being that I knew exactly what I was buying. I paid a set cost, and I got the item I wanted in return.
If a Coke and a Twix make you happy, when you go to the store do you buy an unmarked container that says "Soda" and a box that says "Candy bar" and hope to get a Coke and a Twix? How many containers and boxes are you willing to buy to take a chance on getting what you actually want? When you bought your big tv, did you go to the store and buy a box that said "Television" on it? How many "Television" boxes are you willing to buy to make sure you get the specific one you want? When you buy that vehicle, do you go to the dealership and buy one that's under a tarp that you can't see until you pay for it? And when you find a generic toyota under the tarp you can trade it back for tokens, but only for a fraction of what you paid for it. *And* the tokens you get in trade can only be used eventually buy what you actually wanted in the first place. You have the cash; a few hundred thousand and you'll get that corvette, just keep buying those Tarp Covered Vehicles.
Only people with serious issues play the lottery for anything more than fun and a chance to win. I'm talking serious issues like mortgaging your house to buy tickets.
People who tested the crates, myself among them, posted their results on the pts forum. If it makes you happy to spend approximately 33,000 crowns to get a mount you want [most expensive one in the past cost 5,000 outright] *if* RNGesus smiles on you, then yes, my opinion is that some amount of reason and coherent thought is lacking.

I'm looking for Mother Gothel singing "I won't say I told you so!" but I can't find one. I'll have to make one myself I guess

As someone who works in the wagering industry I would like to take timeout to thank OP for their"mentality". If I ever did feel guilty about my line of work exploiting peoples addictions for a paycheck, I surely don't now with such a classy display.
But I still will feel remorse for the hard working menial job wage slaves you seem to hold in contempt. I have no idea what it is you do, but Im guessing they make a far more honest dollar than you or I. I also deal with people like yourself on a daily basis who think cause they have a little money, they feel the need to tell you about it. Fyi, real rich people dont care if you know if they're rich. Have another twix bar high roller.

If you won't drop the Crown Crates idea because of bad feedback, at least consider the impact it will have on the community! Crown Crates haven't even been implemented yet and the amount of negativity and toxic, depressing forum threads on the issue are phenomenal. Even going as far as creating a petition. People are mad and rightfully so! Now imagine when Crown Crates go live! Be prepared for a riot! I don't know how much of the player base is on the forums, but I can guarantee you we give you a good idea of what the entire player base wants. And what we want, is NO CROWN CRATES! Or at least no Crown Crates as they have been originally advertised. Either extreme changes must be made or scrap it completely.

I really can't wait for crown crates though!

As mentioned previously.
I'm ready to drop $300.00 on release of these crown crates just to ensure a mount
I feel like it's people being hurt because they.
1. Don't have money
2. Don't feel like gambling to get "what they want" - which is why MOST of you are having a cry (deal with it)
3. Think it's PAY to win (which it isn't as it's purely "looks")
If it gave you extra mount speed, if it gave you a mad title, if it somehow gave you a player the advantage over another that has spent 0 then it's pay to win. Which in that case I'd be with you all 100%.
If we want to blow our money out of our butts then it's our choice not you people on forums crying every god dam day.
Sure it might be somewhat of a step in a certain direction BUT until we see PAY to win features i think the whole craze of cry cry cry on forums until they listen to me mentality is misplaced.
Because let's face it... you have people like me and others who are ready to empty our wallets and the reality is?
ZOS won. Fair and square they enticed us to WANT something we don't have. They advertised something that has captured and amazed us, much like walking past a store on a saturday morning.
I agree it's gambling but the reality is, the mount comes with an estimated value of $300.00 if you don't want to invest THIS amount don't do it, as you would be considered some what of a moron as without this investment you MAY or MAY not get what you're seeking.
Sorry to be so forthcoming or rude in some peoples eyes but this is the absolute truth.
