Basic Etiquette for Dueling in One Tamriel

With One Tamriel coming out on live PC servers in less than a week, it'd be good to know what not to do a stoplight with dueling:

-Duel people with similar skill. Someone who hasn't done PVP before is majorly disadvantaged compared to a PVP pro.
-Do research on sets, skill combos, and more.
-DON'T send duel invites to anyone and everyone. That's just annoying.
-Avoid dueling in very busy places, such as capital cities. The lag is already bad enough.
-Clear out all hostile NPCs before dueling.
-Keep potions and food on you.
-Know that your gear won't be broken by dueling, and that you can rez for free if you die.
-Turn on Prevent Attack Innocents to avoid an unwanted bounty!!

If you have any more advice, feel free to add!

    - If you do not want to receive dueling invites (I do want :) ), turn on auto-decline in the game menu

To add to this, it is under "Social - Notifications", not under "Gameplay - Combat" like prevent attacking innocents toggle.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I love the thought, but we all know that NOTHING related to etiquette will ever happen in Tamriel.

Spend 5 minutes in zone chat and you will read things that will astonish you. I was in the military in combat and some of the things said even offend me (almost impossible to do)

Spend 5 minutes in any major city and you will see fools popping off endless hail or caltrops incessantly until you want to eat a bullet.

Spend 5 minutes at the banker trying to target him through the endless mass of pets and people emoting again and again

Do you honestly think anyone is going to adhere to etiquette on dueling when they can't understand basic etiquette in life?

Oh, I don't know about that one. As long as both players know what they're getting into... I mean I do almost no PVP, and I wouldn't be upset if I dueled a major PVPer and got my ass handed to me. As long as I wasn't under the impression that we were on similar PVP skill levels anyway.
-Do research on sets, skill combos, and more.
-DON'T send duel invites to anyone and everyone. That's just annoying.
-Avoid dueling in very busy places, such as capital cities. The lag is already bad enough.
    Yup, yup, yup.
-Clear out all hostile NPCs before dueling.
I don't know about this one either. It seems like it might add a little bit of extra spice to a duel if you were to go to a place full of mobs to do it. Again, though, only as long as both players know what they're getting into.
-Keep potions and food on you.
-Know that your gear won't be broken by dueling, and that you can rez for free if you die.
-Turn on Prevent Attack Innocents to avoid an unwanted bounty!!
    Yup, yup, yup.
If you have any more advice, feel free to add!
And of course, because I have almost no interest in dueling personally, I'll be turning auto-decline on. If someone who I actually know wants to duel and I feel like it, I'll temporarily change my settings and we can duel away, but I won't be dueling any randoms.

    Basic etiquette...

Don't start fights in zone chat just so you can use the "duel me bro" phrase.

If you lose, don't cry about it in PM or zone... Honestly neither the person who beat you nor the zones cares, that you think they only won because they are a noob using easy skills and you are pro who dies to those skills.

depends who you meet. Yes people like to spam skill when waiting, even I am doing it sometimes, just because I like the graphical effects of the spells. Pets are the same I guess.

I have met many enemy players, who could be called honorable enemies. There are immature kids as well as mature adults in this game ;)

    AR = Alliance Rank :)

As for etiquette... If the person's food runs out mid battle. Let him/her eat it again and restart. I don't know how many times this happened to me lol.

If you have any more advice, feel free to add!
I hope that P.A.I. feature will be automatically switched off when the duel starts.
Just to prevent dueling in main cities and populated areas, with npcs around.
It can't be made just by players' good will or some netiquette, because there will be always players who will break the unofficial rules, just for fun, on other more or less meaningless reasons.
If someone wish to duel go into the wilds or into Kwatch arena, otherwise should feel the consequences.

Ultimately, using abilities with P.A.I. switched on causes the abilities being blocked with the game info on screen that you have it active, it means some of your abilities will miss the hostile player and you will be easier to kill. So seeing the issue this way, it's not the best idea in general to duel with npcs around with or without this feature.

With One Tamriel coming out on live PC servers in less than a week

Less than a week ? Do we have a date already for update 12 ?
-Duel people with similar skill. Someone who hasn't done PVP before is majorly disadvantaged compared to a PVP pro.

Why ? How ? That implies duelling only people you know. How about letting people make their own choices ? Noone is forced to accept a duel.
Besides, there might be a bit of chaos at the beginning when people will want their "win 100 duels" achievement, but beyond that, noone enjoys fighting noobs or too easy fights, especially if there's nothing to win by doing it.
-Do research on sets, skill combos, and more.

    That's common advice, not etiquette.
-DON'T send duel invites to anyone and everyone. That's just annoying.

Turn on auto-decline. Problem solved. The whole point is to be able to challenge/fight anyone you want, why would you want to restrict that ?
-Avoid dueling in very busy places, such as capital cities. The lag is already bad enough.

Agree on this one (not only because of the "lag", but simply because of immersion). I'm afraid some duellers will want to be "seen" anyway.
-Clear out all hostile NPCs before dueling.

Why ? People are free to choose if they want the extra spice or not.
-Keep potions and food on you.
-Know that your gear won't be broken by dueling, and that you can rez for free if you die.

Again, that's common advice, not etiquette.
-Turn on Prevent Attack Innocents to avoid an unwanted bounty!!

No need for that. As soon as you're duelling, there's just you and your opponent in your "bubble" anyway. If I understood the devs correctly, only some mobs, already hostile and outside cities, will be "allowed" to interfere.

I agree with some other added suggestions, especially the "don't pollute the chatbox with your personal duelling issues", but I'm afraid that's wishful thinking. I'm ready to put countless players on "ignore" just for that sake...

I hope you folks that at are looking forward to dueling have fun with it, I just hope that not many of the cheaters I see everyday in pvp, duel, just like sucking the fun out of pvp they will suck the fun out of dueling for most people, but since they are mostly AP farmers hopefully they wont screw up dueling for you guys.

I don't think so, honestly. Those people are noticed in Cyro because the population there is very narrowed, but in the entire overworld, they'll be drowned in the masses. And I also believe many PvEers will duel their friends and other noobs for the fun of it, making duelling an overall fun experience for most players, without all the "Cyrodiil salt".

Thanks for the tips.. although, probably the only time I will initiate such would probably be when a knucklehead sneaks in to steal an ore, plants or runestone from right under me.. that's when I just want to smack him or her. Lol! Particularly when you're in the middle of fighting some adds to get to those, then a certain dimwit just come in and take it and leave, while you're still fighting off those adds.

For sure people will have to deal it, when they get their invite declined :).

But personally I do not care if I get wrecked by som elite hardcore players in the duel, I am excited just to try it and to duel in general.
