it's far from modern and isn't american in origin.

I don't believe I said or implied that vulgarity was either modern or American. I just said modern American street talk is unimaginative.

    ah, thanks for clarifying.

totally agree. the language is steadily devolving. soon it will be little more than grunts and acronyms.

Actually, the problem is, they're legitimately hard to use. You've got a poorly balanced sword and an impossible to aim pistol. They saw use in boarding actions, but as far as I know, that's about it. Still, if that's an original example (and not a reproduction) it's been remarkably cared for.

It's not that hard @starkerealm. Thrust sword into something soft and squishy then pull trigger.

hehe... I'm pretty sure it's just a cosplay prop. It's not mine. I just pulled it off the dinternets.

Katanas are lighter and made for fighting people without modern/midevil protection and can be more effective than other weapons against zombies which more than likely will only be in civilian clothes or less... provided it is a good one of course most of them are most likely rubbish knock offs

edit plus in a fight against a zombie I don't have to block another blade
Hmmm... actually from what I remember about the matter of blades, taditionally made katanas really were pretty fragile. As in, known to shatter against bone if you don't manage an perfect cut... at least the ones forged back in medieval times, metallurgy advanced a bit since those times after all.

Mostly because the iron they started with was pretty much stuff an european smith would be laughed out of the forge trying to make weapons with... all that folding? A neccessity to even get to halfway decent blades with the stuff they had...

No surprise when one remembers that samurai originally were not swordsmen, but master archers! Only when european firearms stole their thunder so to speak, they needed something to salve their egos to compensate for their, uhm, lost battlefield potence, and thus the myth of the magical katana was born!
(not that european legends didn't also have a lot of "magical" swords with pretty wild capabilities attributed to them, from cleaving through a man in full plate armor in one blow to change their color a dozend times a day...)

If you want to talk real high quality blades that came as close as you could to legends of "magical swords" in their time, you might like to look at damascus steel...

For the zombie apocalypse I have to say though, a durable weapon that does not fail you in a pinch would be a pretty good idea. So... more fire axe and less katana. Sledgehammer might be a bit too tiring to use unless you have a good deal of muscle. Personally I would really consider the katana in my replica collection last, and grab the cutlass or viking axe instead... ;)

Almost every culture that has ever existed has had mystical or at least legendary weapons. Zombies are stupid, the thing that makes them a concern (if they were real) is the whole danger of the infection. Fortunately, real zombies are just people with brain damage who have been dosed with some really nasty Caribbean concoction that involves poison from a puffer fish. For the sake of discussion though, I imagine a machete would do the trick, and its pretty cheap - you can get one at the hardware store. A cutlass wouldn't be half bad either.

The closest thing to that is in one of the town halls in EP side ( top floor to the room on the right there is a Nord laying on a bed without his shirt and a Dunmer "exotic dancer" dancing without a shirt on his bed for him.

Then of course Darian and that "Guard" in Rivenspire... ( he seduces her). My first time doing that quest I thought she was still the enemy just sleeping so I killed her, I got quite the bounty ^^ )

I dont think I could go for Triss, she always seemed rather slimy to me, I dont like that xD, and just like you said, the history they have and you can definitely see the connection!

I wish so much there would be a very romantic love quest in ESO (if I missed it please direct me to it)... something that feels immersive! Maybe a vampire love story ;____;...

I am sorry OP, got myself distracted off topic a bit!

    Beautiful song.
I have this in a file on my hard drive, for ingame music instead of the original.I have some of the original music added as well as some from The Witcher,.Assassins Creed, and or course most of the music from Morrowind.
    It's my gaming music file.
What I wish is that we could play a different character than Geralt. So that we could adventure WITH him.THEN that love quest could be very interesting.

We may not be children, well some of us are goats, however just because we are big kids now and know all the dirty words sadly does not translate to games. Why? ESRB and money.

Take for instance, theESRB for Witcher 3. Now here is the ESRB for ESO. Let's do an Adults Only or AO game like GTA: San Andreas which doesn't even give us a descriptor really of the rating.

So in short, the ESRB dictates ratings on personal whims that the stores use to decide whether or not they want to carry the product and devs of games are going, you rated this M and it has that word in it yet we include the word and we get an AO. ~FAVORITISM~~IN-EQUAL TREATMENT~~SOMETHING ABOUT ILLUMINATI~

Basically, the ratings are a half-assed conundrum that make no sense and are in no way a good scale on what a game should be rated and act as something for retail employees to point out when parents ask if South Park's Stick of Truth would be good for their 8 year old son because it looks cartoony. And if you want to know, all I had to say was 'how do you feel about *** fetuses?' to those parents. Killing **** is a-okay in Medal of Honor but the fetuses were a step too far as I was told. Who knew?

Edited for me goaty health, didn't realize the censor didn't pick up a word.

He never cries, even at a much more emotional moment then this. I think he even mentions at some point in The Witcher 3 (or TW2) that he doesn't know how to cry.

It reminds me of the scene from Conan where he burns the body of his love and his friend cries for him-

This thread is still going? That's impressive.

Personally, I don't miss the modern profanity. Firstly, I don't think it's necessary in order to create an atmosphere of "maturity." In fact, in real life, I tend to consider it an indication of the opposite. In the context of language, I find it far more mature to be able to express oneself without resorting to the profane short-hand.

Second, from a purely story-telling perspective, vulgarity, in all it's forms has a greater impact when used sparingly.

Whenever I get into the discussion about profanity and vulgarity in entertainment, I think about Deadpool (the movie). It was such a big deal becaue it stayed true to it's comic origins and didn't shy away from the R rating. It was a more "mature" superhero movie. But when I finally watched all I could think was, "That movie was mature in the most immature way possible."

It was gratuitous, and juvenile, which is fine for what it was; it was still entertaining. But it stands as a prime example for how neither blood, guts, profanity nor nudity are hallmarks for maturity. Take all those things away from it, and it was just another ridiculous action flick.

I think we often mistake "the forbidden" for "mature," and the various rating systems make the same error which leads to the common misconception that vulgarity, nudity and violence are grown-up things. There is nothing inherently more mature about using profanity except that, after a certain age, society has decided you're old enough to make the decision to use it without your mom getting mad about it.

To me, maturity lies in the themes and the stories. Are they complex ideas, or difficult moral decisions? Do they make me question my own beliefs? I'm I being challenged by this? Is watching this movie, or reading this book, or completing this quest making me actually think about subjects which I wouldn't have been able to properly grasp when I was younger?

Those are goals which can be easily reached without resorting to vulgarity, and are often of greater impact when not cheapened by the profane.

I'm glad to see that lore based discourse it still active two years into this very popular game. 6 pages on "son of a dog" which would probably be more acceptable in the original language ( translators frequently impose their personal mores on the translation). Wonder what they would do if you had a female character and the expletive was simply "Dog!".

I hope this active commentary/discourse will continue.

The crazy thing to me is how unutterably horrifying some of the story bits / quests are. I just saved a lady who was trapped by trolls in a dungeon cage. She casually remarks that she was captured with her friends, all of whom have now been eaten by the trolls - she's the last one left. Somewhere in her dialog is a glib joke about how horrible their screams were.

    I mean... that's... that's really, really awful.

But, hey, remember the rules: horrific, deplorable violence is A-OK as long as you don't say any naughty words!
