    No you can go without
I heal with my sorc as well as my Templar. Shards are a nice to have but not required. People don't complain when I heal with my sorc either.

Are they absolutely, 100%, super-duper, must have necessary? No. Plenty of healers out there who manage perfectly fine without them.

Does it make life a lot easier for everybody? Yes. The stamina and damage help (and you'll be saving yourself a headache if you just spam the blasted thing).

    Yes shards are essential
Templar healers that don't run shards need to rethink their life. If all you do as healer is heal, you kinda stink at healing. Dont get me wrong; healing is your first priority and it takes practice to be able to DPS 90% of the time, but that is the current endgame meta everywhere but trials. Your job as a healer in good end game groups is about 90% DPS, 5% Utility, 5% healing. Shards do great DPS and gives stam to either your tank or stam DPS. I cant think of any PvE bar setup on my templar healer that doesnt include shards.

Can you run a dungeon without it? Of course. You dont need a Templar healer for any content in the game. That being said, Templars are certainly the best healers and this is one of 3 skills that seperate them from other healers (the other 2 being repentence and BOL).

Well, if there's 2 magicka sorc dds (for example) and a self-sustainable tank, shards are not "essential". There are different situations and group compositions, and not all of them require templar healers...
But if a healer is a templar who doesnt use shards and repentance, he's basically gimping his build, because these 2 spells are some of the best class abilities. Simply because every effective build should take advantage of their class strengths. A templar healer without shards is like a nb healer without siphoning abilities. It doesnt mean that siphoning is "absolutely essential" for any group pve, but not using it on a nb healer still would be stupid.

Any skill in this game can be taken out of your skillbars, and you will be able to manage through content with it. Enemies are fought differently and groups differ a lot in and needs.
-However, shards are a part of templars strenghts in this game, so it would be a waste to not level them up and use them in combat.

    Yes shards are essential
So there are people in this thread answering to two questions:

    1. Do you need shards to complete any kind of content? NO, but it helps.
    2. Should a templar have shards slotted and use it? YES, he has absolutely no reason not to.

You could re-do this thread with the topic of "Do You All Agree On What Essential Means" and it'd be just as torn, apparently. ;)

Actually You can have both. Shards ,repentance ,and BOL are not absolutely necessary skills for the success of a run with a templar healer. However if I remember the name of that templar I will make sure to take some NB or Dk heals.instead of them.
