I never stated that ZOS is forcing me to purchase crowns, but I do not want pop-up ads in a game I already purchased. If a F2P wants to go that route then as a non-paying customer I would consider it somewhat justified. As others have noted there are alternative methods to notify players about new items, such as adding a notification marker in the menu for the Crown Store just like it does when you get new mail or such. Anyway, the point being that there are less obtrusive methods that will get players this information and if done well, then it can also include patch notes with the actual patch instead of forcing players to come to the forums. Other information can be included in this manner as well. The current pop-up system will not support more information without adding more pop-ups. It is effective but extremely limited in function.
As for Warframe, what does an access model have to do with a title screen interface? As @Korah_Eaglecry noted, you are arguing against the wrong thing here. What you should be telling me is why having patch notes and crown store updates on the title screen is bad for ESO.
Ok this caused me to read that you felt this is being forced on players...
"This was not an attempt by ZOS to give players better information. This is an attempt to force the crown store on players as a way to make more money. Yes, some players missed limited time items but forcing this information on everyone is hardly a proper resolution for what a few players missed. Anyway, if this was an optional pop-up then there would be no issue here. Instead ZOS is trying to spam everyone in an effort to make more money. I'm not against ZOS making money, I just don't want to purchase a goat; and if I do want to purchase something I already know where to look for it."
While there are other ways...Id argue there are very few effective ways. This thread along identifies this method is most effective in notifying and offering or informing players of such offers as no one has shared it was misinterpreted or overlooked and that's the goal. It's not to force you and nothing forces people....forcing would be if the screen pops and requires you to buy crowns to proceed. That's hardly the situation here.
The patch notes while they have benefit are far too long to appear in this method. Those would be most effective done elsewhere
This serves the purpose as identified by you and others here. It's just that you don't like their approach....that's cool. Click and go...it's not a big deal or impacting anyone negatively other than eye candy
So where in the post you quoted did I say I am being forced to purchase crowns? The fact that the pop-up is forcing the crown store on me has no impact on me purchasing crowns; you made that conclusion all on your own.
As for forcing or not, if I want to purchase an item I know where the crown store is and how to open it. I am now being forced to interact with a pop-up before I can do anything else in-game all because a 'new' item is being offered. Off-topic but I wonder if this will extend to sales on items as well? It is certainly a precipitous slope.
As for the patch notes, why would going outside of the game ever be preffered to viewing them in the client? Wouldn't it be better to offer both for those players that prefer the forums and for those that never visit the forums? I mean the only way the current method is better is if 100% of all active players visit the forums.
Again, if the pop-up was optionial then I could decide if the pop-up was worth the information it provided. Instead this decision has been forced upon me regardless of if the information provided is valuable to me or not. And for the record, it is certainly not eye candy.
In parenthesis I cut and paste your comments and highlighted it in my last reply.
This game is made by a company whose "game" you're going into. In their presentation they get to pick and choose when and where they market, inform, suggest, offer or lack there of.
Patch notes have never been in TES nor have they been in this game. I'd agree that the game would benefit from such information but I also consider it more logical not to be in the game due to the forums.
Each has its place so the pop-up is ZOS' way to inform customers of what they intend to offer. It's not forcing anyone to do anything. It's not different than a EULA or Agreement. Each time those change you see them and can choose to read or just bypass.
Patch notes wouldn't be welcome to in-game cause ppl don't read the forums and don't read a lot of in-game things. Perhaps the best approach for changes is to color the text of abilities and a "pop-up" or tool-tip by skill, stat, item, section or whatnot but I've not seen it done successfully in any game so blast off ideas with depictions and maybe they catch on and land in the game. BUT I'd bet your tips are turned off as well as others so you wouldn't see this either. Anything that can be turned off becomes ineffective ways to inform or provide information.
All in all I'm saying it's fine to disagree and dislike but this isn't in any way a big deal as its being considered as in this thread. It's definitely worth feedback but not forced, invasive, restricting or a problem.
Honestly, the people that complain about things that they can actually get rid of in a matter of seconds are just plain lazy. Seriously guys, even if, let's say, it's a way for ZoS to advertise their products, it's THEIR product, of course they're suppose to advertise it. What do you expect? And it's not like they have new things in Crown everyday. If ZoS doesn't inform you on things you complain, if they do, you complain. I mean, wtf?! You're not annoyed that they're advertising it, you're annoyed because you have to take the "extra effort" to close it. That's laziness.
I think a pop-up upon log in that is easily dismissed is far more desirable than a store that contains P2W elements. I don't like to be dismissive, but this complaint seems frivolous and entirely representative of the kind of knee-jerk reactions players often have to monetization.
Erm. I was already a subbing player before TU, and continue to be. I never wanted the game to go B2P, but it did, and I am just happy it didn't go P2W when it happened. It's not what we wanted, but it isn't as bad as you are making it out to be. Assumptions are sometines unwise, bud.
Also, your analogy doesn't work. A discussion forum is for discussing, among other things, opinions. Which is what is happening here. Sometimes they differ.
There are many people who may be interested in what the currently featured items are, and I much prefer this over the use of the System Message. But I do agree that making them optional, particularly for ESO Plus subscribers, would be a good move. In the meantime, I believe removing the pop-ups for PC has been added to the options available with No, thank you.
