A pop up window for Crown Store on char load! Seriously?

Would you rather shops had normal items that cost gold and listed below them, items that cost Crowns? Lots of games try to push their cash items on you by inundating you with them every time you buy an in-game item with game currency...one pop up when it updates seems a lot more tolerable.

Imagine if closing a screen one time was the worst of your problems.

The level of bad is not and never was the point. That it's flat out skanky to do that when some of us paid over £100 for imperial edition plus subs since early access (barring a few months here and there when I left a couple times to await new content etc).

To now be shown a pop up window atop the emails and prominent ad on the launcher just is a bit over the top.

I actually like and appreciate the customer service and also the rest of eso, but I'm not going to pretend I find a blatant cash grab a bit cheeky.

It's not like I am saying we're punished, or forced to or any of the other stuff people throw around about simply having to level a character (I know you have seen it, can't swing a cat without hitting 4 of those).

I am saying: I paid already and still do so please just back off. Launcher and mail spam is plenty.

If anyone cares enough about the crown store tat then the onus is on them to read an email or open their eyes when they use the launcher and check into it rather than complain that they missed something.

    This is not rocket math.

I don't actually receive emails from ESO, and I don't use the launcher because it's always broken (I run it directly, skipping the launcher completely), so that popup was the fastest way for some of us to see what was new, which is why I don't have a problem.

Sorry, I did read the patch notes, I do know why they're doing it and I still don't agree with it. I sub to the game. You want to push ads on people that don't, fine, but I want the option to turn it off. I absolutely LOATH popup ads, and I find them especially offensive in content that I'm paying for.

    An ad, it happened once.

It's not a pop up ad. It's an information window that tells you when new content arrives in a game that you already bought and play. Pop up ads are invasive windows that often appear every single time you load a web page and block what you are looking at - often about some crap item that has nothing to do with the subject you are viewing. Totally different.

BS. It darned well is not an information window on content. It is an advertisement for crown store stuff. End of.

Disagree with me that's fine, but let's call the brown pile what it is and it ain't a chocolate ice cream.

Ok, one more time just to vent this point. It is a window that takes a single key press to close, that only comes up perhaps once a few weeks on crown store updates, that is designed to remind people of things in a place they look (i've ignored most of the automated emails sent my way).

If you think this is bad then just ignore the games that place adds on next to every ui screen, with guilt trips written by the devs under the respawn button, with big flashy adds with the time remaining creeping in on the sides of the screen. This is next to nothing, so its good that of all things in the game this is the biggest concern to some people.

I get 1500 crowns with my sub, so I am happy to be informed once about what these can be spent on. It's helpful and intuitive, especially for limited offer items.

What next?? Are we going to complain that an NPC merchant tells us what he has in his store to spend gold on? Maybe he should be gagged too when he tells us of a sword for 3000 gold??

What was new in the crown store and running the exe directly is your choice which means it shouldn't be my problem.

As I said already I don't mind in the least if you or anyone disagrees. That's all good.

Look at the forums....most topics today and yesterday are specifically addressed in patch notes but as pointed out...so few go there to read or don't know to go there so this is a happy medium and informative.

Except this is a terrible solution. I hate to say it but Warframe, yet again, nailed this! When you load up the game you see a title screen, it has the most recent patch notes, information about Prime Access (a type of Crown Store), current events, etc. It is all available on the title screen but you actually have to use a button to switch between this information otherwise it remains very subtle. It is a perfect solution since all the information is available to the player if they want to see it.

When a major patch is released the title screen is updated visually to reflect the new content and while the patch installs you can view all of this information while you wait. It is not obtrusive or inconvenient since you need to wait for the installation process anyway. If you want to review this information at a later date you only need to select it before bypassing the title screen. No pop-ups are ever needed. Again, ZOS thinks they know best but in reality others have already done it better. ZOS just takes the easiest path for them, not for their customers.

We had someone last night who mentioned the crown window open on startup. We debated about it for a bit and once it was explained that all you have to do is hit one button and it goes away and that it wont come back again until the crown store is updated with new stuff they realized how childish and self centered they were being and decided it really wasnt worth getting their panties in a wad and went back to enjoying the game.

As for the "pile of brown" comment...the servers, network, salaries and other costs have to be financed through the crown store. These guys work long hard hours, why the hell shouldn't they be paid and allowed to market their product how they see fit? Do you work for free? Of course they have a right to feed their families...in this case that's via the crown store. You're not being conned, it's clear to everyone that is how the game is financed. Honestly, get in the real world.

What I am concerned about: I remember when ads on a website were an unobtrusive banner ad. Then there were pop up ads. Then layout designs made to fit 3+ ads in on top, sides and then we got the pop-under.

This is the beginning of a potentially nasty trend.

I find it inappropriate for a game I paid for and still pay for because I don't think I need to be advertised to in such a way.

They already got the girl. No need to carry on like this and it will lead to more. Wait and see.

I want to just add that I don't fault anything else at all regarding ZOS/Bethesda etc. I have an issue with all the bugs and some other things but it's just the way it is and they have to walk a fine line and I get that.

This crosses a line for me. Period.

Whether they keep doing it is another story. I am not demanding anything I am just saying it is OTT.

So answering me back with hyperbole doesn't really do anything because I am not as bothered by it as you are by the fact that I don't like it.

Pay attention to how I write. I reply in a calm, measured way where all around people are chucking out huge dramatic conditions 'omg! they have to feed their famblys!!!!' and other stuff like that.

Handle the fact that I disagree but that I respect your right to your opinion and carry on.

    You're absolutely right.

I promise I wasn't trying to fight about this. I was trying to reiterate repeatedly that the people naysaying my OP are making a lot bigger stink about it all than I ever actually felt myself.

I honestly feel like some people are putting emphasis on things I never said on their own and then arguing with the spin they themselves applied to my OP.

    But you're right.

You honestly believe that it isn't likely to become more often?

The big cash injections that were the TU launch and console releases are gone.
DLC sales may be hit or miss depending on everything from region to playstyle (the PvP/PvE balance such as with IC/Orsinium) and are likely to have considerable overheads.

Where is ZOS going to find the money to top off the balance sheet in the mean time?

I truly wish that I could say that it will come from increased subs and a focus on getting DLC complete and released in a timely manner. I can't say that. I don't believe it for a moment.

What I fear is that we will see management requiring an increased/increasing focus on Crown Store items. What does that mean? More updates. What does more updates mean? More pop-ups.

ZOS having shown this to us once isn't the end of the matter, and I sure-as-heck don't expect that it will start-out rare and stay rare. This is, after all, the Crown Store that wasn't supposed to be advertising to us at all. The Crown Store that was only supposed to show itself when we specifically chose to press the key (button) to open it. That has already changed. So will this.

Where will you draw the line, I wonder?

Don't be so daft. I am playing ESO because I purchased the game, just as you did. Does noting how a system can be changed/improved somehow invalidate my purchase? I am merely noting how to include the patch notes, crown store update, public events (if ESO had any), etc. without using an in-game pop-up. Also, I think this advertisement should be optional. ZOS can bury the option in the menu if you want to make it bothersome to change but at least give players the option to not have pop-up ads in a game that they purchased. It's a F2P tactic for a reason.

EDIT: The irony is that Warframe is F2P and doesn't even use in-game ads.

    LOL

Except I do feel I need an ad blocker, calling that window Content was BS and I'm not about to eat a pile of poo and go yum yum no matter who tells me it's chocolate.

I'd much prefer this instead of pop-ups IN-GAME... this is a much better method of advertisement.

That being said, I think if you are a subscriber to ESO+ you should have the option to turn off the popup.

Naah it still needs to pop-up cause ppl miss out on info and then post in the forums....honestly I even wants the patch notes to pop-up the first time so ppl might actually read them.

I think this needs to be written.
If you or anyone feels that this game should be like or should mimic another then why are you playing this?
-Not suggesting to go play the other game but, suggesting to you or them...really think about why you're playing this. It's likely that much more is right here than there, so while it may bother you, is it worth complaining about? Just bypass and play as its in no way impacting gameplay or messing up anyone's account, crowns, etc. and it's less intrusive than the text chat spams from other players attempting to sale things in-game or LFG

Each studio and developer is going to do things differently, some due to staff, ownership, limitations and new opportunities.

I've been on PC all week and the last day this is really a non-issue.

You're comments come off as complaints on a feature that is solving a lack of information that was made very clear to ZOS over the past 4 months. Their first attempt was to do in-game announcements and the community lashed out.

Then they went passive and ppl in the community complained so later you see forum only and Twitter or Reddit and Facebook info but nothing in-game and ppl complained.

Now there is a very brief piece of information and ppl still complain.
It takes 1 sec to bypass

-This isn't warframe or any other game it's ESO...keep the comparison relative to the studio and title that this intends to be
