is Battlemage rare? Between my husband and myself I think we have four of them.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

I only see battlemages on PVP side not as much on PVE. I know they have Heavy Armor skills and Phoenix Set.

There is nothing rare about a nightblade healer. It's just harder(less intuitive) than a templar and provides less resource utility so you'll see less of it. Rare is an overstatement imo.

To answer the question though, from my personal experiences and what I have seen from others, they work quite well.

Because stam and magicka are more useful, and having more HP is never a bad thing (that is, when it doesn't compromise your build's integrity.)

Heavy armored Stamblade (5 of heavy armor) DW/bow (could use crossbow if be possible :D ). Idea was to re-create my setup from "War of the Roses" game. Recenlty changed to medium due to ~5% mitigation loss for over 400 of weapon damage, which is quite essential.
Anyway that build worked nicely: lower costs of block, ST/MG regen from middle of nowhere (Constitution passive), sooo epic 'eavy armor! - where lacked dmg big output and some mobility. Maaaybe with Orsinum i could reanimate that.

I was being facetious :) but yeah, I like having extra health in case kiting goes south. Plus, I like a challenge.

In hindsight, its probably better to run full stam and medium armor. Oh well. This isn't a build meant for parties.

Now that makes sense. All health attributes. Medium Armor for stamina cost/recovery. You just need set items to put out more weapon damage and you would be a hardcore Legolas archer.

    Magicka nightblade saptank.

Not really rare, though, but I still get lots of reactions along the lines of, "Nightblades can be tanks?!"

I absolutely love it, though. It started out as a gear-swap build that I added to my magicka nightblade dps/healer to experiment with tanking, but these days with the shortage of tanks, I'm in my tank suit 90% of the time. It's tons of fun to play: I have decent resource management and can dish out tons of damage (unbuffed spell power of over 1800; should be over 2000 once I switch from Whitestrake to Kagrenac for my tank set), and although I don't sport super-high resistances as a result, my self-healing keeps me alive.

Having played TES games for years, I approached ESO no differently - The game allows you to be what you want to be so if you want to be a axe-toting sorcerer then so be it. Me? Well I'm a maul wielding, heavy armour wearing, Nord NightBlade.

I basically, maxed out the Race skill line to gain the benefits but cherry-picked from all the other skill lines as to what suited the way I wanted my character to be.

He is Lvl 50 Smithing and Clothing which allows me to wear the style and type of armour set up I want - 5/2 heavy/light. My character has to look good. I will not wear an item just because the armour/trait value is greater than the one I have if it does not look good.

Lvl 50 on Two-handed and Dual Wield (Primary and secondary respectively) - both maxed out

Lvl 50 provisioning for those all important Stamina and Health recovery munchies

Lvl 50 Heavy armour (maxed) but nothing on light as I do't need the Magic attributes.

From there just applying the right traits (Mundus and Armour buffs) and enchantments (Health and Stamina) to ensure that I can go a round or three with Mobs 2 to 3 levels above my VR rank.

Ok my build is not as powerful as some but it suits the way I play and have used the skill reallocation feature a couple of times when I've not been happy with something. If I was to create a true NB or DK build, I don't think I would enjoy playing that character as much.

I've got a nightblade healer and it's my fave character.
Also I made an all-stamina sorcerer tank which isn't that silly but it's no dragonknight tank, and i think two-handed and sword and shield is over-specialising a bit

My oddest race/build combo is a breton dragonknight tank, which isn't that odd (you get that unique spell resistance bonus) but i'm trying to make it a sort of magicka-oriented one to take advantage of the racials more
