Unless a game has the numbers like WoW or at least half the numbers of WoW, it will not sustain itself in the long term, hence why you see many MMO's going from full-on Buy and Subscribe model to Buy to Play with a shop, then Free 2 Play with a full-on shop.
Sure, while the title is fresh the game gets a large influx of players and some stay for a while, some leave, but unless the game is "very" successful at maintaining those numbers, it will not be profitable anymore, especially when new content is to be developed, because new content costs money to both make and maintain as it gets more complex and expensive and gets progressively moreso with each and every expansion.

I've been playing MMO's since 2001, but the only game i can draw paralels here is LoTRO, the utterly bad decisionmaking and thus loss of players and change of payment models is almost identical, pinpoint identical. Same bad mechanic changes that alienated the playerbase, thus it resulted in forced payment model changes to make up for lost players. Only difference is, ESO is going downhill faster, at least LoTRO managed to sustain itself for a year and a half longer before going B2P and eventually, F2P. And a shop that was just "conveniences" (Yes it was true, it offered nothing more than ESO does now, just harmless fluff and cosmetics/pets/horses/potions etc) to outright P2W items, crucial advancement items, PvP enhancers and locked almost every single thing behind a paywall unless you subscribed and even then you needed to fork out for extras.
Even things like gold carry capacity was locked behind a paywall.

That is a traditional fate of a loved, self sustaining MMO going down the current MMO industry road. And ESO is heading down that road whether you like to admit it or not. Players just aren't interested for long stay, the game is badly designed for that, hence the loss of revenue and changes of business models.

You can agree or disagree but mark my words, it will happen soon enough as ESO is far from a thriving, growing community, but it is battling to keep whatever we have left - to stay.

ESO's downfall is going to be the bad decisions, such as rushing unfinished patches, breaking old promises and being terrible slow on fixing game breaking bugs or exploits (infinite bat swarm anyone?). If they can't adapt and be quick about fixing things or changing things to keep the game fresh then people are going to leave.

Never. In a no full p2w mmo with megaservers they need money to cover all the expense for the megaservers and all hundreds of Employees, unless they put P2W items and stupid bikini on store like koreans mmo, but that sorry it's not my genre of mmo and that's why i play here like many others. It is more likely the megaservers will shut down if no more money than to go full p2w.

Depending on how well the upcoming DLC's are received by current, new or returning players, when do you think ESO will go F2P? Just by reading the threads and viewing the forums you can see that people do not like IC for numerous reasons (bugs, lag, grind, zerg mentality etc).

    Why no 2016?

I came here looking for June 9th, 2016.

Id say in a year. B2p goes f2p when people stop buying the game.

Pc sales can't be great due to constant 75% off deals advertised. Console sales drop quickly since unlike pc the game can be resold. You can already get it used on ps4 for $30.

See so no reason to ever go F2P, they will have sales and if you are right then it will be in the $5 bin at some point. Of course I do not believe it will ever get to that point.

Am I misunderstanding or are you saying people buying used copies are sales for zos? Zos only makes money once...

No am saying the way you guys talk no one will buy the game so it will end up in the bargain bin.

A little bet I made with a friend.
I gave them a year to go full "free to play".
    From console release, that is.

So you guys are saying because of the lag the game will go F2P? So tell me and explain it intelligently please, how does F2P make the lag go away? Or the bugs?

    1. Lag creates bad "word of mouth" advertising.
Bad W-o-M Advertising means less people buying the game, whether it be digital or disk.

    2. Lag means less players spending money on store items.
Why put money into a game that has bad playability?

    3. Lag means less people paying for ESO+
    Same reason as #2.

Free to Play means more "suckers" coming in and giving it a try no matter what they have heard about it...and, some of them will throw some dollars at the Devs.

Free to Play also means that the Devs either fix the bugs, or close for good.
Because people that get the game totally for free do not have the same incentive to "like " it as do the people that put money in it from the get-go.

Oh, Im sorry you have to pay $60 for all the hard work people put into this game... If you dont like it go play Neverwinter then come back and tell me how much you like F2P (really B2W) MMO's. ESO is already on sale on Xbox live.

People won't leave a game for a single reason, but for multiple reasons. I'm sure there are some that will leave a game for a single reason which is understandable. Why would anyone want to play or keep playing a game that has had lag issues since the game came out?

Don't jump to conclusions, I never said I wanted ESO to go F2P. Also, tried NWN and I didn't like it. Just another generic MMO cashing in on the F2P market.

ROFL what you just said is why it will never go F2P. They would close, because B2P, F2P they would be losing money. The way you talk they are losing money now so they wouldn't have the cash to move to F2P because that would cost even more money to re-code the game.

Trust me, the game will go F2P before they shut down the servers. The only mmo that didn't go f2p long before they closed the servers was warhammer online.

Edit: Apparently they made war f2p for existing players until the game closed. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/warhammer-online-goes-free-to-play-for-final-days/1100-6415948/

    Biased poll is biased.

It will not go Free to Play anytime soon. It only ever went Buy to Play because consoles players wouldn't be charged twice.
If Zeni decides to make it free to play, it will either be because no one pays anymore, wich is not happening, or because the game is going to it's 5th or 10th anniversary

They put ALL development on hold while they worked on console release.
They would do the same with going F2P.
Plus, right now they have about 300 people working in the main offices.
They cut that by half, and there is the money to code F2P.
Then, IF F2P makes money...they hire replacements.

    Basically, the game is doomed.

Now that is the first thing you said that made sense. Of course I disagree.

Trust me, the game will go F2P before they shut down the servers. The only mmo that didn't go f2p long before they closed the servers was warhammer online.

With what money? You think it is easy to change the game from B2P to F2P? You code right? If they have the money to do that then there is no reason to do it.

They don't have to fix anything, and they already have the cash shop ingame so going f2p really is not an issue.

What I find amusing that some people ask the same question about FF14ARR. They go on about how that game is doomed and destined for f2p.

Actually scratch that. I see this question asked about pretty much every MMORPG both current and upcoming.

Which reminds me...I wonder when Skyforge, EQ Next, and Star Citizen will go f2p?

    Just for the record...

    I hate F2P MMOs.

I don't care what platform it is on...an MMORPG without Text Chat is NOT an MMORPG!

star citizen is not an mmo: http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions

No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander series. The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content. Unlike many games, none of these aspects is an afterthought: they all combine to form the core of the Star Citizen experience.

But like Candy Crush and Justin Bieber, it seems to be catching on in popularity and is not going away anytime soon.

Actually, the main issue I have with any f2p game is that it gives more power to their cash shop, plus they tend to be uber grindy.
