    I hate F2P MMOs.

But like Candy Crush and Justin Bieber, it seems to be catching on in popularity and is not going away anytime soon.

Actually, the main issue I have with any f2p game is that it gives more power to their cash shop, plus they tend to be uber grindy.

which is why developers need to enable players to earn cash shop currency without spending hundreds of dollars buying fake currency. so long the game is fun and engaging, people will stick around and spend cash on the ingame store.

Depending on how well the upcoming DLC's are received by current, new or returning players, when do you think ESO will go F2P? Just by reading the threads and viewing the forums you can see that people do not like IC for numerous reasons (bugs, lag, grind, zerg mentality etc).

    Why no 2016?

    One word: Asia.

The Asian Megaserver will keep B2P afloat through 2016, making 2017 the earliest.

ZOS has two possible paths that they can take next. I think the most likely is that they do the Expansion and make a big addition to the game, raise the level cap up from 50, and introduce a new main quest, all packaged in a box. If they do this, they will probably make the base game F2P. Expansions are diminishing returns, but they splash big. A free base game will bring new players in that can buy the expansion. This fits with what Firor said in the interview.

The other reason to go F2P is if they plan to "abandon" the game and let is survive on ESO Plus inertia and the cash shop. If they do this, they are developing a new B2P MMO that will take center stage. ESO has several architectural issues that I bet they would do differently if they had a chance. A second MMO game could be that chance, and would be a batter way to accomplish it than an ESO expansion.

I will not discount the idea that they might take both paths. The paths are not mutually exclusive, but the way the ZeniMax Media seems to work, they will not take the paths concurrently. I have always maintained that ZeniMax Media did not create ZOS to be the "ESO Division". ZOS is expected to make many MMO games into the future. ESO is just the first.

Oh, I won't be sucked into the pre-order scam if I see another mmo with the ZOS brand, ever. Actually, I'm going to be very skeptical of any game they make in the future. No offence @ZOS.

why this doomsday question for a great game ?

"I still do not understand why I followed the advice of Captain Rana to bring the villagers of Bleakrock into safety. We should have fought for our village and not have backed down, with our tail between our legs. Now my home village is in shambles, the houses burning, the invaders feasting.I swear every day to Shor that after Molag Bal has been defeated, I will hunt down the invaders and restore peace in Bleakrock and drink my mead with my friends at the market place".PC-EU

Because every mmo forum is filled with people doomsaying the game, screaming at the devs, and giving no actual constructive feedback, just snark. Snark everywhere. Go and check out any major mmo forum. It's always the same.

tried warframe? it's really good and i hate f2p games. :) you can actualy earn platinum (cash shop currency) from other players by selling rare items. now that, is cool.

Yeah warframe is only f2p game I ever played for any period of time. Even spent about $20 on cash shop just to give them abit of support. They are always putting out free dlcs it seems.

What I find amusing that some people ask the same question about FF14ARR. They go on about how that game is doomed and destined for f2p.

Actually scratch that. I see this question asked about pretty much every MMORPG both current and upcoming.

Which reminds me...I wonder when Skyforge, EQ Next, and Star Citizen will go f2p?

star citizen is not an mmo: http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions

No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander series. The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content. Unlike many games, none of these aspects is an afterthought: they all combine to form the core of the Star Citizen experience.

"I'll believe it when I see it"

In regards to Warframe, that game is hella fun....in short bursts and if you run with a good guild. Otherwise, the gear grind can become quite a chore. But at least the cash shop can alleviate that :p

Also, I don't know if people are still up in arms over Dev Steve's star chart rework, but I know a few who quit over that announcement.

Some commercial games (like Ultima Online) did have free servers managed by volunteers.

    They all failed.

It's not that fun to walk around in a huge MMO with 50 people.
They can't attract much more people by the lack of marketing power and due the fact that their single server can't handle much more people online simultaneously.

World of Warcraft is 11 years old now.
Ultima Online is 18 years old and still alive.

When these games were born, some people said too “This game is doomed”. They were wrong.

    Is wow free to play?

Eeeeh no. You can grind gold and buy sub time if you're good at it though.

Didn't realise logging into your garrison once a day counts as grinding gold. WoW effectively is f2p now if you have more than 3 max level chars.

Someone has to use real cash for others to play the game for free. Nothing has changed really, just a new way of paying to play the game.

That someone isn't me, though. I have maintained sub for free without even actively playing the game beyond garrisons ever since they introduced the WoW token.

This game is B2P, it's very simple. Why are you trying to weigh in on stuff when you are incapable of even devising a simple, error-free sentence?

Neither of them went b2p in under a year either lul

They were not released on PlayStation or Xbox either. And the competition was less.

On the consoles we already pay a fee for playing online. I can imagine that an enormous amount of people isn't prepared to pay extra each month for playing a single game.

As a matter of fact the subscription market in general is shrinking. All the MMO games together had worldwide 30.6 million subscribers in 2010 and 23.4 million in 2014.

It seems that ZSO tackled that trend.

It's not subscription, though. It's the same as every other game there at the basics. That's one of the presumed reasons that ESO wen't b2p. Do you expect to play fallout 4 or es6 without having to pay anything? You pay to get in the door- that's the norm for consoles.

I feel the atmosphere at the General section is unhealthy negative and depressive. It's like these guys play another game than I do. I play a version of ESO which is very fun. No, not everything is perfect, but so is my wife.

Take care, the silent majority is having a lot of fun too. Few people come to here expressing how much pleasure the game is giving them.

The few who do it, are rioted instantly by the depressive ones. You have to dislike the game. You have to hate it. And else they use some silly verbal violence. IMHO, moderation should manage it. It's just a small group who are negative about everything. Most do it for the lulz.

I'm glad that ZOS came to the consoles. I was a big PC gamer, but my console replaced the PC as a gaming device. It's rare that I buy PC games, even the brilliant ones.

With ESO on PS4, I rediscovered MMO gaming. I'm glad I did.
