Console: Should text chat be implemented with the IC patch?

First off, this is already a feature on the PC, so to all the people arguing that the console version of the game doesn't need it because voice chat is already in the game: even the developers don't agree with that, or else they wouldn't have added it there.

Second off, I think the larger barrier to chat integration might be - and this is pure speculation - linked to the total lack of keyboard and mouse compatibility for this game. I could be wrong: that might not be as much of a coding issue as I think, or maybe my keyboard and mouse just don't work with ESO for some reason and they work fine for everyone else. Who knows. What I *do* know is that every other MMO available on the PS4 has text chat and keyboard/mouse support. Granted, the list isn't exactly long, but the fact remains.

Third, a lot of female gamers never use their microphones because of the absolutely insane amount of abuse that gets heaped upon them for having the nerve to speak in a game while female. I don't see why an enormous chunk of gamers should be isolated from communicating with the rest of the population just because they sound female and already have 30 people blocked (in case anyone is unaware, you can only mute 30 people, maximum, on the PS4 version - http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/205904/suggestion-polish-up-the-voice-chat-on-consoles shameless-but-relevant self promotion!).

    tl;dr: yes.

This is a really important feature missing on this game. People might argue to just use the microphone but there is a large majority who also do not for x reasons. Adding a text box for chatting would make this a stronger MMO experience for console. Anyone that it is against this is either so out of touch with gaming or do not know that there could be an option to hide it for those who do not want clutter on their UI. Which to me is weird because a lot of the people i see playing ESO on pc half their screen is cluttered with useful information from the vast library of addons there is.

Also, have you ever tried to sell or buy an item in Grahtwood during peak hours? It's a madhouse.

How about when you and four guildmates are all trying to coordinate getting four different sets of gear crafted for PvP, but you're all in different parties and you get yelled at by your guildmates for taking up a guild channel with that crap while all four guild channels are being used for PvP coordination, as happened to me last night?

A text chat log, however it is implemented, is an incredibly simple way to make a wide variety of things easier. It's that simple.

Rofl - they removed the videos that someone posted showing how terrible the language and talk is in area voice chat .

Trying to hide how bad it really is is pathetic on their part.

It's definitively a yes. Text Chat is part of MMORPG gaming since... well... always (I play them since Ultima Online)!

The reasons behind having or not a text chat can all be valid but one simple consideration should win over all of them: that each player should be allowed to comunicate with the others using the way he prefer.

Not everyone likes to be forced to listen to multiple (often useless) voices while playing, even if he still probably would enjoy a communication system faster than the builded-in console messaging.

Not everyone is so good in spoken foreign languages, too, and this can become an issue when grouping with people who don't speak your very native tongue.

Even written English is much different from spoken, and even if someone is able to read it for the most part, perhaps he is not equally good in speaking/listening to it.

What sounds so bad and wrong to me, reading this long post, is that there really is people out there who whant to hinder other players communication preferences when the addition of a text chat that can be disabled will not negatively influence their one.

no one is using it hence working as intended... Most people are out of chat or in private party chats on their respective consoles, I'd love to see the numbers of people actively logged in vs in a chat channel (with and without mic plugged in)

Opposite experience for me and my friends. They've all gone back to Final Fantasy purely because they said this feels like a single player game. The one girl in the guild who tried ESO said she was horrified at being harassed instantly in voice chat and quit the first day. I want to hear the sounds of the game and communicate without having to listen to idiots. So there are lots of us who are not having a great time. What would it hurt you if some of us could type to each other ?

While I concur with the possibilities of trolls in game, you make it seem like it happens every minute.

If you want to hear the sounds to the game, and not be distracted by anything while listening to it, then text chat wouldn't matter on your wants to do so. You can turn down voice chat pretty easily.

I want text chat too, but exaggerating the bad players in this game to where it feels everyone is a troll, is wrong and false.

I want you to join 3 guilds whom are extremely active and basically maxed out at 500 players. I want you to take your time and talk with those new guildies, get to know them, make jokes, be respectful and have fun while coordinating things. Rinse and repeat and you'll care less about the few troll encounters you come across.

"This person was yelled at here, this lady was harrassed there" is really a weak reason of what text chat does.

You make the ESO players as a whole, look bad, and that's not being productive.

Again, if you're truly concerned about hearing whackos in area chat, turn it off.

If you're really concerned about getting harrassed, turn off area chat.

I've been in arguments in PVP and PVE, sure.
But people move on and so should you.

If there is a will, there is a way.

There is so much game to be played than to sit around and worry about players ruining your experience.

The only person who can do such a thing(ruin your game), is you.

How can I communicate without using voice chat ? Tell me that. I NEVER want to listen to people on voice chat. Never have had to either for years. Had a guild in multiple mmo's that used text chat only. A few deaf people , most who just wanted to hear only the game without having to bother with voice chat. We could do that in EVERY SINGLE MMORPG we have played in. So tell me how do we do that here ? And I strongly disagree with you on the frequency of trolls and bad people in area voice chat. I plan on randomly recording this weekend in cities and guarantee it will take no time to find screaming and vulgar people. It only takes a few to ruin voice chat , not that way for text chat. Also I do not want to be in guilds of 500 people and trying to listen to 30 people talk at a time on a voice channel. That does ruin the game for me, I want to hear the music and combat sounds and in game dialogue with ZERO outside sounds and still talk with my many friends. As I have been able to again in EVERY OTHER MMORPG YET. Except this one. So tell me how do I do that ?

First off, tone it down. I understand the frustration, I'm helping you out and assisting you on a compromise until it does get added.
Guild voice channel is much more respectful than area chat, plain and simple. My guild leaders would ban/kick trolls in a heartbeat. So that issue is gone. Too many voices in guild chat? Change to another guild channel. Sorry for the extreme difficulty on doing so. (It's actually not)

Nobody in that second or third guild voice tab? Good, have your friends join that one so you can all have fun.
Also, I thought your friends left the game?
Why are you focusing on cities and recording players? That's what I'm saying.
It sounds like you look for trouble.
If I'm returning to a city for a quest/vendor, I have no intention on talking on area chat, so I have the players voices turned down. Pretty simple to do as well.

    There are work arounds.

As for the hearing impaired, I suppose either using messaging apps or the PS4 mesaage app on your phone is the best way to go about it.

Understand that I am very much in favor of what text chat can bring.
But saying it depletes voice chat trolls is ridiculous. You can opt out of voice chat anytime you want.

MMOS are about the communities, sure, and if you're not willing to make new friends and new connections in-game using the tool ESO gave us, then I feel your play style might need to change.

ESO on console has a good community, and you just need to fight your "NEED" of a keyboard and try it for now.

Because it's either two things that will happen.
    a. You find a few guilds that you love conversing with, coordinating with, PVP with and everything else, and you are successful!
    b. you complain about the what ifs and eventually quit this fantastic game because you couldn't adapt.

I have to ask , if he/she never again listens to voice chat if they put in text chat , wouldn't that very much in effect eliminate voice trolls 100% for them ?

While I use a mix of TS and text , he/she is saying they want to be able to communicate with zero voice , which as he/she (sorry no idea) , says every other mmorpg allows.

I think you are missing the point that they don't want to use voice at all because they prefer to listen to just the game , while still talking to each other in text , which isn't that ridiculous of a thing for some. More power to them.

Im sure adding a second redundant communication system won't cause twice the lag drops.

PvP needs to be sleeker not more bloated.

[ PC RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ]
    •Memory: 4GB System RAM

ps4 has 8gb ram 5.5gb reserved for gaming, more then enough.

You should do some homework before talking.

So what you're saying is that the ESO servers are bad. Other f2p MMO's have servers with Text Chat and run just fine.

    Lol. You know I'm right.

text chat can only cause more problems and take away from the social aspect this game has.

i like the fact i have to go into a town and actually talk and socialize with people if i want to trade / look for a pvp group etc.

we have forums for text chat and it seems better to promote people to check out the forums to participate in votes like this one.

i really would like the game without text chat, but that is my opinion, thanks for letting me share it.

Yeah i have to say I agree. I really enjoy just chatting wit new people or goofing around.

Larger guilds help to coordinate the end game stuff that most people think text chat is needed for.

Text chat is largely redundant and would divert resources needed in more important areas such as content and non laggy PvP.

    Cheers.

You missed the part where it is not moderated much at all.
And yes I agree it has good points, but being clean, safe and not spammed is not one of them.

Atleast there is a log so people are abit more cautious with their actions. Al qaeda could formulate a terrorist plot in console chat.

    This is ridiculous logic.

The consoles are recording the last 15 minutes of gameplay at all times. Area chat is very documented.

Coded signals were sent through text cyphers long before Marconi.

And why would terrorists choose to recruit from the passive and stat driven players on a mmo?

I would expect gta to be a more fertile hunting ground.

Gosh. I guess we better get that text chat or the terrorists will win, huh?

Wow three comments in a row. No need to bash people who don't agree with you. Comment and move on.

    Saw this thread on Reddit.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/3g16g7/will_there_ever_be_a_much_needed_mute_feature/

I should get my wife to login , hit up the middle of town asking a couple basic questions , run it through the streaming capture card , and post the resulting video and full audio.

Bets on how long it takes before the C bomb and *** threats are made ?

    Joyous area voice chat.

This was the reason why I was afraid to try voice chat at first, because it's the same thing everywhere else, and with text chat, at least it can take them months or even years to find out I'm female (no reason to mention it before, probably), and I'm treated with respect.

I finally worked up the courage some weeks ago (before my microphone got messed up), mostly out of frustration, to suggest to my PvP group we go take the Keep resources first, since we were getting annihilated by the defenders. I got several sexist remarks, couple of perverted IMs, and even a "we don't take orders from women lol go make me a sandwich".
Kinda glad my microphone broke. I play to enjoy myself, not to be harassed by idiots. At least with text chat, my gender is unknown or at least assumed to be default male, which works for me.

My missus had the same sorta experience. She lasted a week before quitting.

This kind of internet behavior exists only in ESO area chat, right?

Geez. Its like the rest of the internet chat rooms and forums are kind and in no way mysoginist except for this narrow little slice of jerkingdom.

I sympathise, with your wife's situation, but my guild has several female players who as far as I can tell are just.another member.

Yes some people can be jerks. But those same.people will be jerks in text chat too.

Typing does not somehow cure sexism.

Play any game with a female voice and you are likely to attract some jerks.

GTA, call of duty, mine craft etc.

Its not right but its a bit narrow minded to pretend that zos somehow can stop the internet from being well you know.

    Pro tip.

If you invite your wife to a PlayStation party you can cherry pick members.
Do this until you build up a reliable non sexist friend group.

    Best of luck.

With text chat you dont have to disclose your gender. Makes it a lot easier. Im ignoring everything you wrote pretty much for fear of being banned. Lets just say it included the word "patronising"

Well I could be banned for posting some of the things I have seen in typed in ESO PC zone chat.
You would hope they would police that, guess what they don't.
So text chat is not going to rid you of the clowns at all.
    Sad but true.

Yeah that's what I meant in my post.

Basement detectives would figure out a poster is a woman about ten minutes after they would in a voice chat.

    Really.

If someone is going to be sexist, they will.

I would like to remind people that this behavior is a violation of the code of conduct and can easily be reported.

Your PlayStation share button is capturing the last 15 minutes of gameplay.

Save the footage and include it in your report.

Why shrink away and give ground to jerks?

    Record. Report. Ban.

    Easy.

Those negative aspects (which are remedied by the ignore feature) are not enough of a reason to not have text chat, if that is what your are implying.

So why waste the revenue on a redundant system when your advice works for voice chat?

Ignore feature is easy on area chat and rarely ever needed anyway IMO.

In both my posts you missed the fact I am not against text chat implied or otherwise.
But this is an example of how text can be misinterpreted due to reading comprehension
and no tonal inflection to indicate emotion.

And yes there is ignore for both text and voice and they have limits also.

    Yup.

I have made a few posts here that sounded funny in my head and read as a complete jerk thing to say.
Text communication isn't as effective or as engaging as human interaction, IMO.

I've voted no because the amount that I use voice chat. With the current way that the voice chat works I don't believe that it would work with a text system if it was thrown in. It would need a complete overhaul with voice chat just for groups or guilds.

I don't think both would work, mainly due to speed. A lot quicker just to say something than type a load of text. Many console players would be forking out for chat pads or being frustrated with constantly changing to separate keyboards (Ain't nobody got time fo dat). For a pvper there's no time to type and fight, so how am I going to communicate at the same time? Voice chat... that's already there!

I can see a place for text chat and I can see it would be useful in some situations.

inb4 chat filled with gold sale spams, trade spams, annoying people spams etc.

But that's just my opinion and I'm happy with voice chat... Apart from add an option to mute! Is that too much to ask? :(

Yeah. I think zos pegged the casual console audience pretty well

Controllers and headsets work really well on console.

Also I'm fine of zos trimmed out redundancies such as text chat to make the game function more smoothly.

PvP needs all of the ram it can get.

Text chat lag in PvP would stack a lagmare onto a slow motion mud run.

Plus, psn has an app that can facilitate text chat wiout even needing to lag your game.

I really don't see the need.

    Cheers.

I don't see why an enormous chunk of gamers should be isolated from communicating with the rest of the population just because they sound female and already have 30 people blocked (in case anyone is unaware, you can only mute 30 people, maximum, on the PS4 version - http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/205904/suggestion-polish-up-the-voice-chat-on-consoles shameless-but-relevant self promotion!).

    tl;dr: yes.

My keyboard is actually hooked up to my PS4... But can only use it for messaging. I applaud you for speaking up for us 'female gamers' we need more people to speak up for us.

Really @mrskinskull your comments are not needed. There is no need to bash people who do not agree with you. State your thoughts and opinions and move on. You don't help the subject by commenting on every single comment. You can use one comment to sum up your thoughts. This thread had been going good with a few said people not comment in much lately. New people have been able to share there thoughts and the pool has gotten many new votes. Let's work together to keep this forum in a good direction so zos will actually look at it.
