text chat can only cause more problems and take away from the social aspect this game has.

i like the fact i have to go into a town and actually talk and socialize with people if i want to trade / look for a pvp group etc.

we have forums for text chat and it seems better to promote people to check out the forums to participate in votes like this one.

i really would like the game without text chat, but that is my opinion, thanks for letting me share it.

Actually restricting communication to only voice chat takes away a huge social aspect to the game. Text chat will only enhance socializing in this game. And it will allow more people to be socialable, such as the deaf and hard of hearing, people who either don't have a mic or are to nervous to use one. Or someone like me that just doesn't want to hear 30 people trying to talk at once.

More options in mmo's are always better. Restricing communication to voice only is harmful to the games success

You missed the part where it is not moderated much at all.
And yes I agree it has good points, but being clean, safe and not spammed is not one of them.

Those negative aspects (which are remedied by the ignore feature) are not enough of a reason to not have text chat, if that is what your are implying.

In both my posts you missed the fact I am not against text chat implied or otherwise.
But this is an example of how text can be misinterpreted due to reading comprehension
and no tonal inflection to indicate emotion.

And yes there is ignore for both text and voice and they have limits also.

you make an excellent point as to the hearing impaired, there are already devices on the market specifically for gaming and voice chatting that can even sync up with your hearing device which is pretty neat. in regards to the shyness, there is nothing to be shy about when you are behind a screen. roleplaying can help alleviate the shyness ( you dont necessarily have to be yourself in ESO).

i feel a chat system is not needed as the xbox one has a built in messaging, whenever i want to trade with people i send them a message if i really want to trade. it a direct link to the person and is faster and easier. making more chat interfaces causes more confusion in my opinion.

besides there would be multiple people talking in chat as well just like in voice chat, most people i hear talking wait before speaking until the other is done.

In text chat you can see the person name next to their message. In voice chat you cant. My b experiences with voice chat I can compare to a schools cafeteria during lunch. You hear a bunch of people talkin at once and it is difficult to know who is saying what. In text chat you see right away who said what and then could intimate a trade or group invite imediatelt.

It makes everything in the game much more fluid and gives another way for everyone to communicate much more efficiently with eachother. And the messaging system the Xbox xomes with is not Sufficientto what this game needs or requires. Text chat has proven it's worth and every single successful mmo both on console and pc, it is a no-brainer that it will be just as positive and benificial on eso.

Ps4 completely pulls you out of the game to message others. There is an app for smartphones and tablets, but tends to be super slow to load and is still very clunky to communicate with.

As I said before, when there is a group of people talking at once, it is hard to tell which name belongs to which voice....

In text chat you will not have that difficulty.

I know how to use the system. Text chat would make those type of interactions much more fluid and simple. Take a look at the PC's text chat. You don't need to open several menu's like in console. All you do is type "/r username then type message here" and send. It's all done, much faster much easier. Also you will have a zone chat that you will be able to communicate with the entire zone, something you can not do with the built in messaging system.

Have you guys never played mmo's before? Because having to go over the basics of how a text chat works is making me feel like I am teaching a kindergarten class or something.

Because every other major mmorpg on consoles has text chat , you can find many who say stupid things like "it's a console version , how can you expect text chat to work" etc.

    Please read all of this.
Heres the deal @TequilaFire . And by all means, please read this whole thing. I will do the same if you reply.

While I agree and feel insulting others is truely not the way to acquire things, but let's not forget that arguments are still arguments which take two sides.
Pointing fingers isn't the way to go on being in the defensive side of changing things either.

    With this being said,

I believe both sides are missing the point.

    On one side of things-
You have people who don't want text chat because of a few major reasons:

1.They personally don't want to use it or feel they won't need it, regardless of knowing exactly what it can actually do.
2 Possible concern of when or if a text chat is implemented, it will indeed change how they do things in-game AKA comfort zone.
    3. The fear of cluttering/spamming/trolling on the screen at all times.

Here is the cool alternative/resolution to each of those three things.

1.You don't have to use it at all. The way you communicate, sell, trade, group, etc, will indeed stay the same.
    2. Since using either Text and Voice chat would indeed be optional for personal use, it doesn't force those who DON'T want to use one or the other. Where as those who favor one over the other, and currently how the game is, it forces those to change how they should or want to play with.
    3. Spamming my/our ears with cuss words in Voice Chat is inevitable, regardless of how many people you've blocked. Why? Because you don't block someone for nothing, you've already been trolled/cussed/annoyed at already, resulting in the issue always being one. With text chat, usually if not always a cuss word is automatically crossed out or written with "#&#&#&#* type jargen to demote the personal attacks/offense certain individuals may feel. Text chat is usually not as personal than hearing that person tell you the same thing.
I'm not going to get to into it. I'm sure you're a decent person.

But let's step back a step and look at everything on the table.

As a developer like ZoS, whose got big shoes to fill with the console market, in terms of bringing one of the most important and popular RPG series and converting to an MMO with direct competition to other MMOs too.

    Let's start:
You have (X) amount of mmos with (Y) amount of content that you're competing against.

While those (X) amount of mmos have so much in common, yet differ in certain things...
    Such as
    : Leveling
    : Story
    : End game
    : Combat mechanics
    and so on....

Yet all of these MMOs have something in place as a standard, like putting air in a tire for a car. It's common sense and logical to put certain rhings in place, to make it work.
And that thing I'm talking about, is diverisity in how we communicate.
As generic as the console market already is on communication, they keep it that way without implenting the entire feel of an mmmo to the consoles. What does this do? It cripples our potential(console users) to thrive in this somewhat new experience for the entire console based genre.
(There are at least three major mmos on the PS4 platform that are virtually indentical to it's PC brother, it can be done.)

Limiting us with options, makes us indeed the weaker platform and the least likely to work together fluently.
(This is one of the key reasons on MMOS surviving. Strong communities.)

If text chat was added, I promise you won't have to use it.
Everyone opposed to text chat, carefully read that again.
"You won't have to use it". So your concern of trolling or spamming in text, will never be your issue.

It will be nothing more than a simple pinky nail sized icon on the far corner of your screen, that's all.

Again, I understand those who don't care for it, or don't want it, won't use it.
But in what way is it a bad thing to add something that you won't use it (which shouldnt matter then)
    for someone who will?

I feel having only text chat would cripple this game too, as they both(voice and chat) compliment and balance each other out immensely, which creates an amazing and powerful communication interface.

You won't be dissapointed, I promise!

    Thanks for your time.

Should it be implemented? Absolutely. Communication options are important, and console versions should be as equal to PC versions as possible (this from a PC-only player.)

With the IC patch? No. It needs to be its own project, implemented in its own time. It'd be great if it landed with or even before IC, but don't tie the two together.

And this is actually not even close to as bad as it gets at times.

Yeah , area voice chat is a great way to communicate with random folks.

    Its A No From Me.

The Consoles Aren't designed for Typing. You'd Spend More Time Finding The Letter To Type Than You Would Actually Messaging.

The Xbox allows you to plug a keyboard in. You can type when sending messages to players, they keyboard is currently just not not enabled as an in game input devise.

I have a friend that is mute. They literally can't sell anything unless it's to a close friend that stands still long enough for them to message their gamertag.

I heard far worse and often. But this is another example of EXACTLY WHY I WANT TO NOT HAVE TO LISTEN TO VOICE CHAT TO COMMUNICATE. I want to play the game and hear it only and talk with normal text chat as I have in every other console mmorpg. This was a very stupid decision on the developers part.

in regards to the shyness, there is nothing to be shy about when you are behind a screen. roleplaying can help alleviate the shyness ( you dont necessarily have to be yourself in ESO).

You have no idea how difficult it is to roleplay with voice chat. Roleplayers already get harassed for roleplaying via text, now imagine how difficult it is to roleplay, especially roleplaying someone of the opposite gender. Even same gender, it's just awkward. It's one thing to type: /me turns to Zarden and in a commanding tone says: "You WILL fall into formation and you WILL follow my orders, soldier!"
It's another to actually say it through the microphone. Not to mention people who will misunderstand you. Oh, and we can't do emotes properly either, remember that, it's just standing around.
Likewise, it's one thing to type:
"((brb, gotta feed the dog))" when you want to say something out of character, and it's another to say it in the middle of the roleplay. Also, if you do have to go BRB, then at least the message stays printed on the area chat and everyone is aware of what is going on.

Do you want to roleplay and still be active with your guild? Tough luck, buddy, it's going to be very difficult to understand what is going on if you have both chats on. Even if you are awesome and can understand both your roleplay group and the guild chat, you will still be left out of the other 4 guilds. It's very difficult to do anything with more than one guild as it is right now.

Sorry for the wall of text, but roleplaying is one of the big selling points of ESO for me and, right now, that feature is completely gone on consoles.

TL;DR: Roleplaying is inexistent due to lack of text chat. Chatting with more than one guild is very, very difficult. Planning anything with more than one guild is also very difficult. We need text chat.

They ripped the rpg out of this mmo. I wish they would just open a roleplay server with text so the people that are opposed to it, will never have to be bothered with it.

I've voted no because the amount that I use voice chat. With the current way that the voice chat works I don't believe that it would work with a text system if it was thrown in. It would need a complete overhaul with voice chat just for groups or guilds.

I don't think both would work, mainly due to speed. A lot quicker just to say something than type a load of text. Many console players would be forking out for chat pads or being frustrated with constantly changing to separate keyboards (Ain't nobody got time fo dat). For a pvper there's no time to type and fight, so how am I going to communicate at the same time? Voice chat... that's already there!

I can see a place for text chat and I can see it would be useful in some situations.

inb4 chat filled with gold sale spams, trade spams, annoying people spams etc.

But that's just my opinion and I'm happy with voice chat... Apart from add an option to mute! Is that too much to ask? :(
