[CONSOLE] Display Character Name or GT/PSN ID in the Game?

I feel like ZOS is ignoring the issue, but I'm curious how many people would actually want to see their character name instead of their GT/PSN ID above their head.

This would be nice. I would like to see text chat first though.

As I was typing this I got an epihiny. What if the reason we lack all these basic features every other decent mmo has because the devs ran out of time making the console version and just released an unfinished product so they can meet a deadline and start making a profit on the console version.

THEN made up some half witted explanations to why the console versions don't have these features just to buy themselves some more time to add these basic features in future patches.

:o I just blew my own mind

The game doesn't show names above heads at all

If your asking about the ID that shows when targeting someone...either is fine but GT/PSN is more logical on consoles

To me it doesn't matter but if I had to pick I'd choose Gt/PSN cause that's how we know each other.
I don't want a game that removes the console logic and social aspects of the console

I don't get this" this is how it is on consoles bit". It's not for every mmorpg I've played on the console. Character names were shown for characters. Why are some acting like this is "normal". It is for FPS , but for mmorpg's I name a character because I want to use the character name. And again , Final Fantasy and DCUO both use these. It's not "console logic" because most other console mmo's use character names (and text chat). There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there from some with an agenda to fool other people into thinking all console games are like this. It's not true when it comes to mmos.

I think if the chat name was above ppl's heads it'd make sense but that isn't apart of this games design so you're left with the Account identifier which on consoles is the Gt.

Oddly in BETA for console while grouped it showed both in the group interface but not on screen
They said why it is the way it is so it prob won't change but....

I'm just pointing out no chat name is why it's that way.
On PC there's nothing to associate with other than a name so u get that first (PC is free of compliance issues vs console)

It's not the "console way" , nor "console logic" and I'm irritated at reading that about this issue and others.

    I've played multiple mmos on the PS2 , PS3 , PS4 , made by different companies.

All let you remap your controller ,
    All had text chat.
    All had character names used.

So ESO is the exception in leaving all these out. It is most certainly NOT the "console way" in regards to mmorpgs.

I wouldn't mind the option, but I wouldn't set it to character names. They show character names on PC and it's so annoying to meet new people in the game only to not know who they actually are a few days later when they've logged on alts. I end up just removing most of my new friends on PC because of this, but on PS4, I still remember how I met people on my PS friends list that I haven't spoken to in weeks. It's also really nice seeing the same name in your PS parties that displays in the game so you can actually match a character to a voice.

It's interesting how when PC launched, there were threads complaining about how they implemented the character name/userID system, yet that's essentially what this thread and others are asking for to be implemented on console. Grass is greener, I suppose.

The PC versions not only show the character name, but also their account name.... it looks something like this

Account name(character name): text chat here.

But hey its just another basic feature this game lacks....

It certainly kills the immersion seeing "Sniper_Boy-360_Rekt" running around instead of an actual character name.

Many of my guildies have some really cool role playing names which fit their character. It's a shame I don't get to see them in game when I'm rolling with them.

    Especially the Argonian names lol

Maybe even some sort of compromise for those that want to keep Gamertags; the Character's name first and a sub-heading of the Gamertag. But then why can't you just hold the select down to see another character's profile for their ID?

I'm telling you, there's a guy out there on the top of the leaderboards named something like xX_BF4_NOOB_Xx

The majority is in favor of it. So it should be done. It's a basic feature just about everyone was expecting to be in the gane... because every mmo has it.

So many stupid decisions made in the end that HURT player experience when they honestly look at out face and say it's "for" player experience. The name thing takes me out of immersion the instant I group up with people.
.... I have to admit, the devs do listen to reason, if not to the forums. Thank you for "nameplates", a welcome addition to immersion, as well as the text chat box for PS4, which only comes on the screen when I need it too, and helps this gameplay SO MUCH MORE then without it. THANK YOU for the additions. Very much appreciated.

To be fair given its ridiculously hard to get into a working group without people quitting or just not turning up with the insane lack of a text box im not finding this too much of a problem.

I'm kind of on the fence about this issue.

On the one hand, I'd say the whole character name thing worked fine overall in DCUO, and it could probably work for ESO as well. However, on the other hand, for "alt-aholics" like me, it pains me to say I do prefer the boring old gamertag, if for no other reason than simply as a means to eliminate confusion amongst friends and other players.

When I played DC Universe a while back on the PS3, I quite often found myself having to explain to friends and clanmates (Were they Clans? Guilds? Legions? It's been awhile--don't remember the proper lingo) that I was indeed the same person but with several different names (note: DCUO had its own friends list, separate from PSN, and so nobody--in my case, at least--really went by their GTs). I also frequently got confused as to which alt I met other people on, so I'd always have to figure out which alt name to use to refer to myself.

"Hey remember me? Does 'this alt' ring a bell? I'm also 'that alt' and 'that other alt'....Yeah, it's me! Yes, I know I have too many alts...No, you can still call me 'alt name'; I don't care."

The people I played with would sometimes get confused as well and often just defaulted to calling me whatever name they knew me by best, even while I was playing on different characters; this occasionally might've puzzled any pugs/randoms in our raid groups who would hear one name over voice chat but see a different one displayed.

So, having experienced both sides, if I had to vote for just one or the other I'd have to choose GT/PSN ID over Character Name. Implementing Character Names only in ESO, IMO, would just make it too difficult to meet/keep in contact with people and guildmates through the game; the current system might somewhat defeat the purpose of having unique character names, but gamertags do provide consistency and unity. That's my take on it.

Now, I didn't actually participate in the poll because I feel there should be a third option: Both GT/PSN ID and Character Name. Why not? ESO already does this to some degree; on the Friends List and Guild Rosters, Character Names are shown in addition to GTs/PSN IDs. Perhaps there should be an option (or several options, rather) to allow Character Names to be displayed above/below a player's GT/PSN ID (in a different font or form like Italics and in a different size), and maybe even allow the player to decide which name they'd prefer to be dominant. The options could be simple and resemble something like this:

    Display Character Name --ON/OFF--
    --> Above ID/Below ID

(*Note: Above = dominant, larger font; Below = less prominent but still readable, smaller font; Character Names would either always be italicized or in a different font to distinguish them from GTs/PSN IDs)

Example (can't change font or font size here, but you get the idea):

    ...............................Gamer_Tag............................................Name-Goes-Here............
    ...........................Name-Goes-Here.................OR......................Gamer_Tag................
    .....................................O...............................................................O......................
    .................................../ | \............................................................/ | \....................
    ....................................| |...............................................................| |....................

(**Forgive/ignore the periods, it's the only way I could seem to get it to format correctly with the spacing**)

Come to think of it, this sounds even more like a completely feasible option if you take into account that you already have the ability to display Titles beneath your ID. Though, having a Title displayed in addition to your Character Name might also pose a slight issue as there would be three lines of text above your head. Hmm. I don't know if that would be too much. If done tastefully, with differing text sizes and fonts, I think it could work. If not, perhaps a less favorable alternative would be to introduce an option to display Character Name in place of a Title.

And wow this turned into a long post :open_mouth: . Didn't think I had that much to contribute to the discussion until I realized I was still typing. Well, that's my--a few cents more than--two cents. Keep the change XD

Edit: I'm growing ever more curious as to what others think of this proposal of having the option to display both the GT/PSN ID and Character Name. Agree? Good/bad idea? Should we settle for just one? Why not vote both? And why not throw in a complementary vote for Text Chat while we're at it? ;) Us consolers, so demanding...but if we don't demand, then they'll never supply. :)

Why is there even a bad-word filter on naming your character if no one can see it anyway? Why even have that if everyone is going to see your PSN/GT instead. This is just silly.

It seems ZOS didn't want to make an "MMORPG".
They made a "Console Multi-Player Game".

And they, pretty much, ruined a near-perfect game with decisions that are so far away from an MMORPG experience.

@MLMace Your Character Name is actually visible to friends and guildmates in the Social Tab, so that's likely why there's a filter. But at the very least like I suggested above, I think there should be an option for names to be displayed in addition to GT/PSN.
