Most of us aren't angry with people decrying text chat as an end to the game we're just baffled, maybe a bit frustrated when the evidence is so clear.

The primary issue is an inability to consider more than your own perspective on events, solipsism.

You may personally find text chat a problem or distasteful but the vast majority as evidenced on many forums don't see it that way. Your own examples even break down your argument.

If you find someone's behavior a malfeasance, with voice chat you can yell at them a bit and hope they go away and not much else. You can't record voice chat without an external capture mechanism and the resulting footage could be easily faked. With text chat it would be minimal effort to screenshot the behavior and send the screenshot directly through a report mechanism if it were implemented resulting in 100% proof. I.e., they could ask you to select the segment of text chat in question and the game itself could take a screenshot of the evidence, or just a copy of the log.

Your primary concern seems to be people's negative behavior yet voice chat allows people to get away with all manner of crappy behavior up to and including actual domestic violence being that you have no easy way to prove, identify or report the person in question.

Sure, text chat would still allow for those voice chat people to get away with a lot but if the purpose of chat is to allow the protection of those you feel the overwhelming desire to protect, you could do a lot more damage to your ideological opponents with text than voice chat.

Meanwhile, people who just want an easier way to organize will also be happy. And I assure you few people are going to be typing mid-fight, no one argues against using voice chat once the group is organized. Those who would type then either lack a mic (yes the console comes with them but, surprise surprise, things break), or have some disability preventing them (that's the kind of person you want to protect isn't it?).

Most of the arguments against text chat boil down to:

"I don't want it" - not a real reason. Maybe if it were explained more clearly.

"PC has text" - Yep, and consoles should not have an inferior product to PC which will soon have both text + VOIP.

"You can use VOIP" - You sure can, and you still can. No harm done here.

"Typing is too slow for combat" - So don't type in combat, that's not what most want text for anyway.

"People who want text are PC players" - Yet, they are playing on consoles. That makes them console players.

"Two forms of communication will fragment the community" - The community is ALREADY fragmented, since many immediately leave area chat and other forms of VOIP upon entering the game. This simply leaves these players w/out ANY way to communicate, instead of text + voice.

None of those are actual reasons NOT to include some form of text-based chat system in the console versions. They are just reasons that some might prefer to use VOIP, which they absolutely still can even if text-based chat is introduced.

Absolutely ZERO of the arguments for VOIP-only actually address some of the problems that players want text-based chat to curb.

The game's systems were designed to work based on text-based chat, and w/out it many of the in-game systems are now very clunky and frustrating to use, such as guild recruitment, grouping in Cyrodiil, selling wares outside of guilds, receiving help for non-dungeon content, etc.

Console and PC players pay the same price for the game, yet console players will be forced to play a lesser version of the game than the PC, who will have access to the best of both worlds. This is simply unfair to pay the same price for an inferior product.

Many players who suffer from social anxiety, hearing disabilities, and other barriers to VOIP naturally flock to MMO-type games are extremely put off by being forced to communicate through voice only, creating a barrier to the game for players who would normally be drawn to this type of social experience.

There are other reasons as well, but these are the most glaring ones for me, personally.

Instead of coming into the thread and basically spouting useless drivel, perhaps those who are pro-VOIP only might actually find ways to address these issues w/out text-based chat systems that don't involve leaving the game and... using text-based chat systems outside of the game to do things inside of the game. That's completely backwards and unacceptable.

But I highly doubt that will happen. It's just going to be more of the same already-refuted arguments that don't have anything to do w/ the debate instead of anybody even attempting to address the underlying issues that have caused players to ask for text chat.

The game will prob eventually get text chat. I'm not going to stop every five mi utes to put. My controller down and plug my keyboard in just to answer your question. Or worse yet, you can't be bothered to use your mic and keep texting me every five minutes with comments relating to what my mic'd up friends talked about five minutes ago.

And if you are the keyboard cowboy, your hands aren't on the controller.

You are less helpful to your group. Use your group chat.

It's really kind of sad when you read these arguments. I mean they are clearly just grasping at straws without any thought towards logic or reason. Frankly it's baffling do they actually believe what they are typing or are they just typing it for the sake of typing it. But let's try to break down some of his points

See how simple that was. Just common rationality and logic. Also anyone find it a little ironic that he brings up how he doesn't want to waste his time by plugging in his controller every 5 minutes to answer questions, yet is totally willing to waste his time by brining up totally worthless arguments on a forum....

I will say I am a PC person but I got the PS4 version. I like it! But it really feels dead without some sort of communication. I have the voice chat on and most of time it is either dead or someone that I am hearing their quest through their mic. Frankly I am back to PC because it feels like a MMO to me. I really want to put my all into the PS4 but no chat system doesn't keep me hooked.

Anything to keep tacky text chat from spam selling items into the console version. You are worth the effort and all the explanation you need to understand that text chat is a redundant waste of development revenue.

That's really weird. You bought a game that you already had and now that the experience is different and you are having trouble socialising you just go back to the other version of the game?

Its a different experience and you knew that when you bought the console version . No its not the cookie cutter mmo. But it is something very cool. Just turn the ui off and wander around in first person. Its really fun.

I think they should just add text chat to the console version. So the people who are begging for it can begin complaining about how much they hate it or how it doesn't work right.

Lol. This. Thread is full of people ready to whinge over the smallest things. How many threads are there complaining about how bad ESO is? Its barely a month old. Text chat, no text chat.

The people that want it will be back here minutes after it is implemented.

Again I know my opinion is not popular here on the forums. But I found them on a fluke. The majority of players on console are loving the current communication system and see no need for text chat.

I am making the argument for the people having way to much fun to tangle with the negative complainers on these forums.

Text chat is redundant. After all within the context of thee forums many posters think they are witty. In reality they are bitter and petty and should in no way be given a trumpet to try to pour poison in the ears of a community largely enjoying their console experience.

I have literally no other complaints about the game, I'm happy with everything else.

I'm not entirely sure why you keep inserting yourself here. I can't decide if you're trying to incite us into getting ourselves modded or what but it's just free bumps in the long run. Carry on.

If you want to present a case beyond "I like it and my way is the only way", then I'm ready and waiting.

Rebut the following:

Zonewide text chat fosters community by presenting a larger audience to converse with on any and all subjects.

Guild text chat allows greater organization of guild events by way of communicating with the entire guild instead of just one channel.

Party text chat allows everyone to get on the same page for important facts with no room for error BEFORE a difficult combat.

Private text chat allows you to keep up with friends without jumping in and out of your group, guild or system party chat.

Zonewide text chat allows PvP organization on a stronger scale creating a more cohesive PvP community.

Zonewide text chat allows for quicker and more compatible connections for trade, guilding and grouping on the fly and by communicating instead of waiting on automated systems.

Any text window allows for subtitles to have a location to feed to including a log that allows reviewing of quest dialog mid combat you may have missed.

Any text window allows for server messages to be retained for more than 4 seconds allowing you to read them even if you weren't looking directly at the screen at the moment it popped up.

Zonewide text chat allows passive learning of game mechanics and other information as questions you might not have thought to ask get answered.

All forms of text chat keep a log allowing for the reporting of inappropriate behavior with definitive text-log evidence.

And most importantly:

Any form of text chat would grind your gears.

It's not redundant, it's far more synergistic than VOIP. VOIP is a great tool, to be sure, which is why it's also coming to PC. Each form of communication excels at different things; there's literally no reason to shut out text-based chat when it is the standard in games of this type for a good reason.

I see them as tools, as I mentioned. Sometimes you need a hammer, sometimes you need a wrench. Use the right tool for the job, instead of trying to use a hammer on everything and saying it's all good.

Many of us have tested / crusaded / etc until huge amounts of balancing issues and bugs have been fixed for YOUR enjoyment. Heck, the next major content patch will feature 2 bug fixes that I personally tested and brought to dev attention and wouldn't have been fixed otherwise, and it will not be the first time.

But that's fine, you can call me "bitter and petty" for wanting to make this game a better experience for everyone playing it, not just those who think like I do.

I hope you enjoy your day, but don't forget that the people you're insulting are the ones who have been striving to MAKE this game awesome for far longer than you've had any experience w/ it at all.

I just want to say I love the clean interface which would be ruined with a chat box. Being able to form a group of players for PvP without needing a third party voice program is the best thing ever also very nice for groups. There is the occasional annoyance in town with some one leaving their mic on with a crying baby etc but honestly less and less problems as players learn mic etiquette.

NOTHING. It's great you like the integrated voice chat. Good for you.

If it's added you can toggle it off so you don't even see it. So this has nothing to do with you apparently, you just decided to add this why?

So have it optional with the ability to toggle on and off. Or have the box itself see-through with just whatever channels you've joined popping up as suspended text, like most other MMORPG.

Either way, it'd be no more intrusive on your interface than the rather large account name that pops up on your screen when someone is using voice.

So many small quality of life basic features holding this game back. Honestly if ESO is going to be successful and not die out in the next 1 to 2 months they better patch in text chat. I'm already seeing people leave or not logging in as much as they were.

Also wanted to bump this thread to keep it on the main page.

Totally agree. 60 plus members in the guild . Same 8 or so using mics . No guild chat is ridiculous can't organise anything in game properly . Got like 30 members I've never spoke to. That's not how we do things. Pvp would be so much better with an alliance chat to get organized with other guilds pvp ing which when you're on the smallest alliance is terribly important by the looks of it . How about a cyrodil wide text chat to arrange mass battles guild v guild am I crazy for thinking such a thing would be possible? It's going to fail hard imo .

Combat numbers too . Can't have any sort of theory crafting or ability testing . No original load out's or rotations just PC community standard (if you want to be efficient sure you can use any useless move if you want ) . No kill confirmation in pvp . It baffles me why they were cut from console . Should've been toggle options . How about the lack of a mini map ? How about having no idea were all your group members are when your keeps under attack or how it'll affect real difficult raids if they ever get introduced from what I understand ATM there's very little real hard pve content anyway . The u.i in this game is terrible for a supposed mmo . Just can't understand the train of thought at all

I was going to refute your arguments or maybe just offer a 'hang in there' but maybe the community would be better off without such negative players. I can complain about anyththing. We have that in common.

You seem to have made the point that PC is better at memo cookie cutter than console. Wow. Pc has more features than a console translation? You've really cracked a code here, bud. The console version is tailored to the console crowd.

The PC and mmo hard cores will prob always feel a bit uncomfortable with a different set up.
