If you have social issues, maybe a mmo isn't for you. I don't want to play with anyone that doesn't talk. They are useless in the group. You are actually below a random, because at least you can hear the random in area chat

Sure, Voice chat is definitely needed for raids and whatnot - but when you're not in a raid it's just an inconvenience.

IIRC they had a text box done and coded, but pulled it near launch because they thought VC would be better, so it really is a 5 minute job to get a text box in game, I would say over 90% of consoles players would want or wouldnt mind text chat. It wont harm the game at all...
Plus i have social anxiety, so when talking to strangers, if 2 people on mic are speaking no way i would involve myself in their convo, but if it was on text chat i may do.

Normally I would ignore a statement like this, but as the father of five kids I feel a little compelled to.
You're statement is not only rude, but ignorant as well. Two of my kids have social issues (ADHD and Autism) and they have EVERY right to play an MMO. In fact, they both played WoW, DCUO, and (although not really an MMO) Marvel Heroes. They are playing Tera now. You know what? All of them have text chat, and they both play those games very well. ESPECIALLY in groups...calling people like my kids useless in groups is something that never should have been put in writing. They have medical ailments that prevent them from being verbally social, and as a human being you should NEVER say or imply that they are "below" you for any reason.

Another thing if they add chat text the players who don't want it and turn it off will splits up the community even more between the ones who want a chat box and the the ones who want only voice. For me and others if we turn off the chat box then the players who only use chat box will be separate from the ones who do not want to use it.The community is already split up into 3 alliances adding a chat box will splinter the community even more between the ones who won't use it and the ones who will.
One last thing if you want the community to be strong and for the game to do will then lets build up a community in the game with what we have already. That won't happen by splitting the community into two groups. In my honest opinion anyone can disagree with me but I believe adding it will kill the game more then not having text chat by splitting the community into 2 the game will die even quicker.
Are you implying that those of us who just turn off voice chat aren't already splitting it?
If anything that just means we'll join voice chat when there's something going on that necessitates it, i.e., groups running dungeons/pvp/whatever.
As is we're all deaf and dumb insofar as communication goes.
Also, my friend ran into someone out in the middle of nowhere lastnight having sex with their mic on in area chat... soooo that's just great.
No I am not but it seems most people who turn off voice chat also want text chat added from what I seen.So I grouped them together.
That's most of the games content right now what's the point of text chat?If most of the game content Trails/dungeons/PVP then what is the need for voice chat other then for trading. It seems most people want text chat to make trading easier for yourselves.
If we were all Deaf and dumb how would we be able to play the game or even use the chat box?I want to know how are you getting that from my post?Would you like for me to call you Deaf and Db would that make you feel better?
Well the person was at least being considerate and going to the middle of no where to do.The player probably thought no one would come their when he did its not like he did it in the middle of daggerfall.

Yes, you can turn off Voice chat - and then have no way to communicate with the people that you do want to hear from. Without Text communication you either "deal with the harassment" or are relinquished to no communication.
You can't hear text chat. It's much less offensive when people type rude things in all caps in a little side window than when they shout it directly in your ear at high volumes.

Please re-read my post. I wrote that you can turn off Area chat, which seems to be the channel that's annoying most people (including myself) so much. That still leaves you with Guild and Party chats, which are great tools to communicate with the people you want to hear from. Text chat will do nothing to stop trolls from harassing people, making racist comments, hitting on women, etc. It would only give them a broader audience on global channels. If you're experiencing this kind of hate in guild voice channels then you might want to consider finding another guild. I'm not saying that there aren't valid arguments for adding text chat, only that trolls and azzhats in voice isn't one of them.

You can't hear text chat. It's much less offensive when people type rude things in all caps in a little side window than when they shout it directly in your ear at high volumes.
That really comes down to one's own sensitivities. I'd say someone calling me the n-word or talking about how they did my mom last night are equally offensive in text or voice.

True, I'm not bothered by foul language myself, but I am bothered by useless noise. They can espouse all the idiocy they want in text and I can still get the useful stuff out of the chat, not so in voice chat. It just takes ONE person with no manners to ruin the mere potential to communicate in voice chat.

one is a little box that is easy to ignore on the side of your screen. the other is the entirety of one of your primary senses. i don't consider that the same.

So sight is not a primary sense anymore?

So you don't see a difference to yelling and hearing things in you're ear that is offensive and things people want to ignore, compared to a fast glance and ignore it?
