The Gender Question

Why a male would want to play another male in ANY game never ceases to amaze me. Why spend all that gametime on some "dude"?...
    .

I don't feel the need to pretend to be a female in real life so why would I do it in a game?
...the only DUDE you should care about IS YOURSELF.

I'm an Englishman, not a dude.

I'm a female playing male argonian. Wow, didn't think we were such a minority. The attention you get by playing female is not really what I'm after when I play MMOs. But It's not as bad as it was a few years ago!

I am Female & play mostly Female, Once in a while I will make a make toons, though I seem to use him very little. Real Females are often treated different in game, but I do make it a point to do my own thing. Though it is always amusing when people find you are a real girl, one of two things happen (not sure I like either).
    A. Most guys start the flirt factor. (Thank Goodness I am taken)
    B. They ask me to be their healer. (Um of all my toons 0 are healers, but it is assumed we play supporting roles).

    So oversimplified but true.

The concepts of "Avatars" makes no sense. Why are you trying to emulate yourself in a game in the first place? This isnt' VR. Nor (in ESO) are you "Dead" or thus a "Soul Shriven".

I'm with you on that, the idea of playing myself in a game is ridiculous. I find people trying to play themselves or someone they know in real life way more freaky than guys playing females.

I don't have to "try and play myself", it happens naturally. If a game presents moral choices I always take the positive path because I find it extremely difficult to do anything else.

I could never bring myself to play something else than a female character. Being female myself, I could not really "identify" myself with a male one.

Even in games where your choice is restricted (League of Legends) I try to go for the class specific female heroes.

A few years ago (and to some extend still in LoL) that and my name choice got me some unwanted attention, but I noticed that at least in MMOs that time is mostly over. Either people have accepted that there's a high chance of a guy sitting behind a female character, or female gamers are becoming more mainstream.

Female playing both Male and Female characters. I learned long ago that Female playing Female could be the target of some very vicious or nasty comments from other players, so for the longest time I played only male characters.

As I have gotten older and engaged in more games, I have started being more of a loaner, so I find it easier to place idiots on ignore instead of dealing with them.

Still, after years of working to avoid the idiots online, my main is still male.

MMORPG, I guess you are ignoring the "Role Playing Game" part.

If you really do believe in forcing people to only play characters of their own gender, then your comments about women being fat or ugly and the lack of a "tranny" option is even more insulting.

There is no issue with humans playing characters of any gender they want, except by those males who seem to think that every female character they see in game is fair play for their targeted misogyny and hate filled comments.

Don't think it happens, go look at all of the news stories and reports regarding verbal attacks on women.

I have friends that can't picture himself in a lady's body and friends who said "I'm already looking at a male everyday in the mirror."

Personally I can't stand the idea of man dresses. Until they do that, I'm sticking to female light armours. Plus I do level female warrior/blacksmiths, just so when my cousin wants to play around, she won't pester me about "Hey ***, why can't females be the best armorer huh? Why can't I screw around with a lady huh? Why do you always play stinkin' steroid jabbed weirdos huh?"

I'm a male who plays male main tho. But I perform better on female characters given the mentality "They won't see it coming! Muahaha"
People keep telling me they're gonna buy me an ale. They never do.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's culture. And the Elves.

I'm a small, middle-aged woman. I got bullied all during grade school (I read books that weren't assigned, I'm sure there's some who've been there too)m and had two rather abusive men (the last one should be caged permanently) and met a lot of really slimy, backstabbing people in general.

So of course I like to play big, brawny monstrous male types who can kick butt and whoop arse all over the place in video games.

I also prefer beast races over humany types, but my WoW roster _is_ full of male blood elves - ever take their shirts off? - and one be female warrior blacksmith who is a redhead and has the ... angriest ... face I could find.

"The prettier the avatar the deeper the voice."

I've been complimented on my character a few times but I most certainly do not have a deep voice. (I'm almost 41 and I've been mistaken for a teenager on vent, needless to say I've stopped talking on chat programs. lol)

However, I am female playing female characters. I, also, can not see myself identifying well with male characters. It made it harder for me to play Thief and The Witcher, just as the first examples that came to mind.

And to those who complain that this question is asked for every game and blah, blah, blah ... I find it quite fascinating to see how the answer changes in each new game. I've watched the MMORPG and online gaming industry grow and I've seen my fellow gamers go from probably >5% female to probably close to nearly 50% female. It's been entertaining to see how the answers change over the years.

If you model your char after her or after your or her mother then you actually have issues. If you model it after her friends or her sisters you will have issues with her.

I always play a female character being also a female myself. I like chick characters better, they look nice. And also like looking at their backsides better than male characters, which I guess is the reasoning for also some men to play a female character too.

Actually that's the definition of weird. Anyone who is different enough that you have to turn your head to its side because you just don't get it, is weird. I'm weird, you're weird. To someone, at least. We're weird to people who don't share our beliefs and dont' understand them. And I guarantee that everyone has at least one belief that isn't shared by everyone else on the planet. That makes everyone weird to someone.

You can't be a unique individual without being weird.

That said, we are also, at the same time, normal to those that actually get us.

Yes, I always used to create some male characters so I could spend some time not being hit on or insulted or talked down to.
Now there is somewhat less of those stupid attitudes as more women play and the overall age of gamers rises.
The comments still exist but they are fewer and I am more capable of ignoring them after having heard so many idiots in the past already. I look forward to the time when I can place them rather than spamming bots on my ignore list.

I never understand the playing "other gender to be tasteless and creepy" line of thought. After all none of us are catpeople/elves/orcs/lizardpeople/mages/people with superpowers like intermittent dragon wings in real life (and few are accomplished martial artists/fencers/archers). If one is going for all those aspects that are different from oneself, then what is the difference in playing the opposite gender?

I mostly play my own gender as it very hard to do a very realistic portrayal of the other gender but all kudos to those that do pull it off well. For the same reason I stick to various cultures of humans for the most part but really appreciate those that can give a decent portrayal of other species.

Now isn't the time for the debate. The difference is that we all know nobody here has dragon wings, but we are either male or female. Imagine a white person who declares "I am hereby transracially black."

I do hate the use of the word "Toon" it really sounds red neck.

You were the one who raised the matter. It does imply to me that you have issues. Perhaps you do not but it does come across that way.

Also, my characters are physically different from me, in culture, colour, size, hairstyle, etc. I do not understand those differences being regarded as odd either. We are playing a game, not re-creating ourselves within Tamriel, which does not exist ;) .

Btw, I did not use the word "Toon" in that post though I do on occasion as I have arthritis and sometimes need to type as little as possible to save myself from pain. (And British and university-educated here, to dispel some of your misconception.)

I play both...does that mean I am bi?

Now in pen and paper games, I play male exclusively, but in online games it depends on the character. I have several names I use in all games, 2-3 are female characters and 2-3 are male. My main in here is female, but my primary alt is male.

I'm a female and I only play female characters. For whatever reason, male characters seem so unappealing to me. Not in the physical appearance factor though.
It's just that when I create male characters (be they scrawny, brawny or lanky) I always have the precarious inner debate on how they should act in game and--its the most curious thing--even when I do make the decision in my head on their moral characteristics I simply can't 'get into' the characterization myself when I play them. At least, not in the same way I do with female characters.

I have a hard time playing male characters ever if at all. I just recently made the manliest character I could think of just for fun in a parody sort of way. He's a Nord named Asgunrvald von Freyrbrand who fights for the Aldmeri Dominion but hates magic users and weak puny elves and as fun and novel as it was for the time I'm probably going to end up deleting him because I'm not going to take the time to level him to anything meaningful.

I have always played female characters whenever given the option since such options ever existed because I identify the most with them and playing as male characters is awkward for me. Seeing as I have yet to play an MMO that allows you to make Male [sex] characters that are girls [gender] in appearance or Female [sex] characters that are male [gender] in appearance that I've never had the opportunity to explore that facet. Though admittedly you can make some masculine looking Females I have no interest in doing so.

    If it's any insight I'm a transgirl.
