Just to chime in... I'm a male playing both. I don't usually go hardcore into RP but I do like to have a backstory for my characters. For example I have a female Nord DK, modeled and named for a Valkyrie. I have a male Templar modeled and named from a character in a book. (Purthin Khlaylock...10 internet points if you recognize the name!)
It's got nothing to do with the sexuality of the player or the character and it's got everything to do with playing the game how you want.
7 of 8 of my characters are female, so am I. The only one male character I have I originally created for parking in the bank and holding my crafting materials. Months later I decided to level him, he's VR2 now (my lowest level character^^). It feels strange to play a male character because it's "not me" in any way, but it's also fun because he's cute and looks a bit like a certain someone
I tend to divide my characters evenly. Mainly a preference I developed.

I'm a male that plays both. I tend to create female characters though mainly because I like the idea of a female protagonist that you wouldn't expect to be able to fend for themselves, doing exactly that.
Believe that'd why Joss Whedon made Buffy as a 16 year old cheerleader. You generally would assume they're vulnerable. Sorcerer types I tend to go with males though.
