According to an older poll, the split between people using lol for something funny and people using it as a sign of ridicule was about 50/50. In specific instances it was usually possible to tell which is which, but it did make the totals meaningless. If you really like a joke, why not use "awesome"?

Dude it happens to people at RP events ALL THE TIME. If roleplaying in an MMORPG (note the last 3 letters there) means I and many others are "instigating" it I think people fail to understand what game they are playing.

Normally my frustration comes through my comments as well. However, this OP was specifically forum oriented and a perfect place for a forum mod to actually answer. 95% of the stuff on the forums the mods can't answer or likely shouldn't.... more akin to asking the receptionist to answer your health questions at the Drs office.

Doesn't make us less frustrated as players with the state of the game, I know

but this was at least within the capacity of what the forum mods do.

We live in a politically correct world.

I was never offended with any of the LOLs I received and encouraged others to do the same. The forums, being optional would be a hard place to bully/troll others - but in game, bullying and trolling happen all the time, yet ZOS doesn't seem to do much to curb it.

You just confirmed exactly what @PKMN12 said, thank you. I shall share my opinion with you too: Why not add a "LOL" button again, but along with a new actual "Disagree" button? If one member is found abusing the "Disagree" button, maybe there can be some method to ban them from using any of those buttons? Let's face it, if they'll abuse a "Disagree" button, they'll likely abuse "Agree", "Insightful", or "Awesome" too.

Without a disagree button, a person who disagrees is more likely to partake in a discussion as opposed to simply clicking "disagree" and move on. This behavior is fine for people who agree, since no difference in opinion exists.

No - we really aren't because some of us are concerned that anything we say will be taken as baiting/trolling some kind of thing if we don't say it all pink and sparkly - even if the OP or the comment we disagree with was utterly rude.

As long as the moderation is so utterly inconsistent I am not going to be bothered with writing out a statement in response to a ridiculous post which is stupid, whiny or both.

I will answer you (even to disagree) because your comment has nothing that will force me to have to be blatantly honest in my disagreement and the reason/s for it - and then get nabbed by mods if I call a duck a duck. ;-)

I've openly disagreed with many posts on the forums. To insinuate that disagreement is grounds for moderation is silly. Your only requirement is that you aren't abusive with your response - which isn't an extraordinary feat to abide by.

I didn't insinuate anything I flat out stated it as fact because it is a fact - but we are not allowed to discuss moderations on the forums as this is against the rules too so I cannot even post proof of it without getting warned or even banned. I have over 550 'agrees' and it is not because I am talking rubbish here.

I do not trust the moderation here. End of.

Regardless of an arbitrary number of 'agrees', it doesn't make an opinion a fact. If the simple act of disagreement indeed was grounds for moderation then not only would we have been moderated thus far for disagreeing with eachother, but the people in this thread would have been moderated for disagreeing with @ZOS_AlanG . Thus it falls to 'how' you disagree being important when a post is weighed - which is not a bad thing. You can hold whatever opinion you'd like of the moderation, but to play that off as fact is intentionally misleading.

Past experience here suggests that it's the presence of such buttons that would encourage stupidity.

What is it about the internet that makes it so that if someone says something someone else disagrees with or finds silly they can't just make a brief constructive reply and move on? Why the need to have things like a "You're a moron" button to press? It tells us far more about the person pressing the button than it does about the initial poster.

I think you've just stumbled onto the heart of the LOL/Disagree button issue!

See, the problem here isn't the buttons - the problem is that ZoS decided to "gamify" the comment system. There is not now nor was there ever a REAL problem caused people clicking on Disagree or LOL or whatever. The problem is that ZoS cares more about maintaining the sanctity of the forum "badge" mini-game than they do about making the forum a functional tool for players to communicate with each other clearly.

LOL, this is what happens when you let a bunch of game devs design a forum! They should have outsourced the whole thing to DISQUS so people could speak clearly and freely and mod comments up or down at their pleasure.

if i can agree, i should be able to disagree too, some people have some weird ideas of what they think the community want

generally LOL was used to disagree with people or mock their idea, so just give us a disagree.

Maybe if there was a "disagree" or "downvote" type option people wouldn't feel the need to use ironic reactions. Bring back LOL and add a proper negative reaction because not all reactions are positive so why force it?

Is "Like" and "Dislike" too simplistic? Either more options or two options is how I see it.

"Upvote" or "Downvote" is fine.

Yeah, I don't get this at all. It's not like anyone can truly "troll" you with reactions. Each person gets ONE reaction per post. If that person wants to use "disagree" or "LOL" on every post they read..so be it. It's one vote but it's their vote so who cares. If there were more options..including some negative reactions..it would be much harder to abuse the reactions with "ironic snark" (like that's something so horrible anyway). I would think the mods have more pressing business than monitoring LOL reactions..like suspending/muting people every 5 minutes for no reason?

You can disapprove of something without being insulting or immature. "LOL UR AN IDIOT" button has no constructive value and really does say more about you than it does a poster.

Too bad ZoS spends so much time tracking what people are using what forum buttons for what users... instead of launching new content in a game that has become completely stagnant for 6 months running now...

This was exactly the problem and why it shouldn't be brought back. It was being used as a way for players to retaliate against one another. It added nothing of value to this forum.

If you want to lol a post you still can. Simply quote the post you find humorous and then type lol.

I am sorry for those who lost a convenient way to denigrate posts. Well, actually I am not.

Did people abuse the LOL button? Without doubt. Did EVERYONE abuse it? No. So why remove the option for everyone because of the actions of some? Besides, removing the LOL button hasn't really change the behavior that caused it's removal. The first thing people did was decide 'insightful' was the new LOL. And did it really matter that much if people did abuse it? It was a number on a screen, no one was hurt. If feelings got hurt, that sounds like a personal issue way beyond the scope of the forum. It is just not the same using the awesome button for a truly funny post. Bring back the LOL!

I really don't see the harm in having disagree and lol buttons, so what if people hand them out liberally? If they had both options, maybe lol would be used more as intended and less as a substitute for a disagree button. I don't understand this care-bear community, where people can't handle negative feedback.
