Yes. As with any standard multiplayer game on these platforms, an internet connection and an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus membership will be required to play"

"As with any standard multiplayer game on these platforms" ESO is a multiplayer game. To be able to use the servers on console, you have to subscribe to their respective service.

I read this and understand. This is not needed to play online. They just want you to think that it is needed :) So you was kinda brainwashed. Which is Ok.

Ok, so if you already have this free online access, why even make this thread?

Read it from the beginning. Perhaps it will help.

So you want to pay sony another cost of the console in 5-10 years for nothing? This is what you mean?

If you use a console online you are connecting through their network. You pay for that service. End of story.

Aside from that, if you don't plan on playing any other games on a PS4, and you don't plan on using the PSN for anything, then why would you even consider dropping the $500 or so it costs to buy the console just to play ESO on it, when obviously you're already playing it fine on PC? It makes no sense, and this entire thread makes no sense.

Why don't you point it out then? Since I'm obviously completely missing it. You state in your OP that a PS+ is needed to play the game. That costs 50$ for a year. Even without talking about other online activity, they state it's required.

Are asking me to advocate stealing codes or something? That's the only way you will be able to get + without paying baring some promo.

I'm pretty sure you can't play online at all on PS4 or XBone without Plus/Gold.

Yes, you could on PS3/XBox 360, but that has changed. Blame Sony/MS, not ZOS.

Just a thought - perhaps it will have better graphics. Which might not be the case, but we don't know that now... But as far sa I can tell - I would really stick with PC for now or until they will drop this stupid requirement.

They won't drop that requirement. Ever. They can't. It's Sony's playpen, and if ZOS wants to operate in it, they follow Sony's rules. Sony's rules mean that the PS4 connects for ANY online game through their servers, so if you want to play any PS4 game online you have to pay for their online service. Period. End of story. No "drop this stupid requirement".

Maybe I'm just a careful shopper but I've never paid more than $40 for an Xbox Gold membership and a couple of years less. With it I get all the free games on the 360, which I get to keep forever, and the free with Gold games on the One. Just ask for it at gift giving time.

It is needed to play the game on console. You play ESO for fun; pay for the expenses required.

Now, if you're trying to get a better (and/or equal) deal compared to the PC... that's another story.

James, again - I don't need any service. I just need internet connection to the ESO servers to play. Where is the sony service here? Nowhere.

The service is that you may then play games which need an online connection to or through the console manufacturer's network (in addition to your ISP costs, of course). And if you don't, you'll get to choose one old PS3 game for free once per month!

Consoles are closed platforms by design. The manufacturer is no longer content to just get money from you at the sale of the hardware (which, in the past, often was offered at dumping prices), nor is he no longer content to earn money with the sale of every game (that's why the second-hand market has been killed with the last generation). His best case scenario is to continuously get money from you through "value added services" for as long as you're using his hardware, and then sell you the successor, because you've invested so much at that point.

That's why the respective console networks are closed off of the Internet. Nothing gets in or out without the consent of the manufacturers, and any 3rd party company that wants to offer any kind of online game has to go through their networks. That's the main reason why ESO went B2P, because one of the big two console manufacturers didn't want to relinquish their network tax.

I have no idea why PS+ is required for online gaming. I dont own a console. I assume there is some reason for it.

Want to know why? Take a look at this link

That's not the only reason (although it's definitely a big reason). It's also an attempt to prevent malicious third party software (or just third party software that alters proprietary software in an unauthorized way) from getting onto their systems.
