i had it open allready and i just now re-opened it and it still is not updating ...

i had it open allready and i just now re-opened it and it still is not updating ...

Once the patch is available, still being pushed yo.

The PTS had a 10gb download.. so i guess the patch is at least 10GB

Because it is being applied to the live server on their end. Once it has been applied to their end, THEN we can download it.

1) take down megaserver network (15mins+/-)
2) Install new instances on relevant servers (30-45mins)
3) Bring servers up in passive mode ot make sure they boot & run (15mins)
4) Check install and login with new client modules locally and remotely (1hr)
5) Run Load balancing tests to make sure clients dispersed correctly and servers balance (30 mins)
6) Release new pages/download links for clients (15mins)
7) Release Patchnotes (15mins)

Total time: 3hrs15m +/-

Present status: 36 minutes in

p.s. All figures, times and projections are completely made up by a guy who knows nothing about server rollout and installs.

It's clear to me what is happening with the server, I just wish the message that popped up when I opened the launcher didn't say the server was down for maintenance. I get it though, it's actually patch day and that message was generic. Fortunately I could reason with my very literal mind and grasp what was really going on. ZOS is pushing update 6 live to the North American server. Excited about this.

If the server-side goes wrong in some fashion and has to be rolled back, then as long as they haven't already made the client-side patch available for download, all they need to do is restore and try again (or postpone trying again until they've figured out what went wrong). If they have already made the client-side patch available for download and the server-side goes wrong, then it's a nightmare to fix, and it could result in people who have already downloaded the client-side patch waiting days to get a new patch that will allow them to play the game - potentially while others who never downloaded the previous patch prematurely are still able to play. Heck, due to the complexity of putting a new patch out that accounts for people who have, and people who haven't downloaded the premature patch, it's possible it could be weeks for that new patch to come out.

Granted, that's a worst case scenario, and it's unlikely to happen, but when you're doing deployments you have to think about worst case scenarios, how to avoid them, and what to do if they happen anyway. I've been through enough deployments at work in the last year or two to know this...

TL;DR: because it would be stupid to release the client side patch for download before they know the server side stuff went as planned.

Wow really? I only been playing these games before most of you were even born. I would have to say a patch as big as this would of already been started or they would of had it in a few places for people to download. So I pretty much understand how this stuff works.

Been playing MMO's since before I was born? Didn't know they had them (or internet) in the 60's......

This is how patches for this game have ALWAYS worked. Get used to it. ESO does not have an incremental patch downloader. The don't post large patches days ahead of time. This isn't WoW.

Well, since you've been playing games this long, presumably you know how a patch rollout works. They would have started preparing the patch to go to the servers before today, but they would not have opened it up for clientside download by now.

The patch file may be ready for us to download, but that doesn't mean that they're going to release it for download until they're sure the server has been updated correctly. This has been explained already in this thread.

So what you guys are saying they haven't tested this update on internal servers to make sure it works? This is the first time they are rolling this big patch out and aren't sure what could happen?

Amazing! Of course that could explain a lot what they put us through during beta and at release. Ok I get it now this isn't like the games in the past.

Thing is, with the massive size of it many players won't have managed to download it for hours after the servers come back up.

Give the humungous patches ZOS do you need to learn from Blizzard how to deploy background-downloading of such huge patches DAYS before patch day!

I wish they would post any changes made AFTER 1.6.4 separately so that I don't have to read through the entire book of patch notes for 1.6 trying to distinguish what's new from the notes I have already read from the PTS.
