Wayshrines where did they come from?

rogue_gamer32b14_ESO
Wayshrines are all over the place. Yet in every Elder Scrolls game, they don't exist. I know in Skyrim Dawnguard DLC Wayshrines for the Forgotten Vale were introduced. However they were one time travel and useless after. They also didn't exist outside Forgotten Vale.

So can someone explain to me where these immersion break eye sores come from and why aren't they around in the series?

I am guessing that they are left over Ayleid relics that were destroyed and forgotten about by the time the events of Oblivion takes place.

Not possible...they were not in Morrowind, Arena, or Daggerfall games. All came before Oblivion.

They were easier to use than a Horse and buggy... lol

But Lore wise they should have just used a Horse and buggy..

That's true but there were no Ayleid ruins on Vardenfall or Solstheim. I cannot speak to the other games as I have not played those. However I see very little other explanation for them, as they do closely resemble the Wayshrines of the snow elves and the Snow elves and Ayleids employ remarkably similar architecture.

Then everything fits perfectly. If ESO is now the earliest game chronologically, then the answer is simple... the wayshrines are Ayleid devices that will either break down and decay or be destroyed sometime between the events of ESO and Redguard (the formerly earliest game in the chronology).

    Easy. :)

And we even have irl examples of what could have happened to them. Stonehenge and ruins like it were pillaged for materials http://abyss.uoregon.edu/~js/glossary/stonehenge.html

Even the great pyramid isn't safe. After an earthquake, most of its outer casing stones were used to build in Cairo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pyramid_of_Giza

Something like the wayshrines making travel too easy for lore can be easily bypassed as an issue. As a magical device, its use could simply have magical consequences... or magical requirements.

I'd hypothesize something like this. The wayshrines can only be activated and used by a being who has been touched by the power of the Aedra or Daedra, or perhaps maybe even something more specific than that, like that they have to have a mystic connection to Meridia or someone else that the player's character would have had a connection too but most other people don't.

Well, the ingame book "Wayshrines of Tamriel" seems to support that idea...

Though, its theory is that if a being's soul is "unmoored from the Mundus," it would be possible to use them as transport.

I came in to this thread expecting it to be more along the lines of, "Magnets, how do they work?" I am highly disappointed.

And OP: they don't fit in the lore too well, but since this entire era is a big question mark in the history books, it doesn't really matter. Why are they there? Because this is an MMO, and people would never play an MMO without some form of fast-travel.
