I hopped over to the wikea to look at lore names and wonder why there are next to no family names listed for Altmer in any of the games other than the list of possibles from Arena which used a formula. I started using elvish names using the LoTRO name generators for definitions but seem to have drifted to Italian and Greek for some reason though my Bosmer is lore-correct.
Scura di Notte - Altmer Nightblade (gear)
Lalin del Sombra - Bosmer Sorcerer (alchemy/enchanting)
    Angevin Sarkany - Bosmer Dragonknight
Alkemene Velothi - Dunmer Warden (Morrowind)
Sanna yos'Phalen - Altmer Sorcerer (provisioning)
    Cosima di Mattina -Altmer Sorcerer
    Naria Andrano - Dunmer Templar
Luca della Serata - Redguard Templar

What is really ridiculous is if you report an offensive name in-game, they just tell you to turn on your profanity filter.
    There's a profanity filter?

Because all names on UESP come from the games and NPC Altmer never used family names after Daggerfall, with a few rare exceptions. Keep in mind that parts of the early lore are outdated and it's especially visible in case of racial names: Argonian and Khajiit underwent a complete overhaul in Morrowind, for example. Fun fact: Legolas is a legitimate Bosmer name in Arena and Daggerfall. What were you thinking, Bethesda? :#

I imagine many Altmer simply do not have family names. Perhaps they are used only by the nobility, like it used to be in some real world cultures?

One of my characters was made specifically to be a mule so she got Banksy Storsalot, but all other characters that I make have a lineage or story to their name.

Black Belly is an argonian whose name couldn't be pronounced so his slave masters named him for a defining feature.

Ba'len Shiver-claws is jumpy khajiit NB

    Edoril Duskthorn is my bosmer

Dacitus Rex is my main and the origin of the family named used by my character in Skyrim (I based this off the roman pronunciation of King Arthur, this is by far my most lore breaking name but is a character named used in multiple ES games)

Garoc Ogre-kin is a massive Orc who was banished from his home and lived with the Ogres

Erlygg Stormborn is named such because he's a sorc/nord who uses a lot of lightning based abilities.

The guild I run actually made a second guild for when Justice system drops for our evil characters, every member has made a character with no last name just a moniker. So my dunmer is named Soril the Soulkeeper, it seemed fitting to have these characters lack a family name and have a nickname you might see on a wanted poster.

I appreciate some of the funny names too and don't consider them too immersion breaking. One guild member I had named his argonian Saves-you-Money which always tickled me. One thing I have found is that those with the most ridiculous names don't tend to stick around for long while those who put a lot of serious thought into their name seem to stay with it longer.

    I've seen an Argonian named "[snip]-In-Shadows". I suppose that's technically lore-appropriate.

[Moderator Note: Edited per our rules on Cursing & Profanity]

I've seen that too,and thought it was both funny and clever. A touch vulgar but much more subtle than most of that type.

I give my characters lore appropriate names for their race, but they all share the same surname. It's not good rp, but it helps guildies know me no matter who I'm playing. I think it strikes a decent balance.

That's all nice for RP'ers but PVP'ers could care less and if your a PVE'er - don't judge a player based only their name - you may need that good player in the next dungeon you do.

That's not true of all PVP'ers. It's too big a community to speak in such general terms or assume everybody thinks that same as you. Some are very well versed in ESO lore.

And I do judge on names. I don't care about lore, but anybody with a GoT name or something like "World Best DK" (arbitrary example, not naming or shaming) will be mocked or targeted.

Argonian names are not Argonian names, they are Imperial versions of Argonian names.

    Sometimes they're actually in Saxhleel.

One doesn't have to be an RPer to want a lore-friendly name.

Not all my toons have lore-friendly names, but if I didn't have a reason to name them outside of lore, I tried to keep it lore friendly.

I care, I'd rather play with people who care about the game and the lore than people who have just minmaxed their character, given a silly name, they aren't likely to be the sort of people I really want to spend time with.

Also if someone "could care less", it means they care about it. The saying you are looking for and misquoting is "couldn't care less"! (Sorry, personal bugbear of mine).

Sadly for some races the lore-friendly names differ from language to language, so I decided to name my Nord according to Arena and Daggerfall naming conventions.

What is wrong with GoT names? On the EU server I am a member of a GoT guild, we all have at least one GoT themed character and often do a little light RPing or just general GoT chat? I don't get the hate?

Go play the GoT MMO you say. What is it?

I have LOTR characters, GoT characters, characters from novels I have read, characters from movies and lore friendly characters. Untill they create a RP server (on the first of never) I don't see the problem.

There's nothing at all wrong with GoT, or its fans and supporters. But the literally dozens of variations of Jaime Lannister and half a hundred Lord Starks are just groan inducing. It shows an astonishing lack of thought or creativity.

The insurmountable amount of lameness is what is wrong with using GOT/ASOIAF names in a TES game is what is wrong with it. ;)

...and yes.. "Horny Butsecks and Sir Wanksalot" are much less embarrassing names to have on a character.
