Suggestion - Inspect Player

    Nope.

Not unless we have an option to turn it off. But even then, you get people saying things like "only n00bs don't show their gear" and whatnot. It's just a bad idea altogether.

If you want to know what someone's using so badly, just ask them. Really, it's not hard.

This is the core of the problem.

If anyone can inspect you, then you get people demanding that you have such&such gear.

If you can enable/disable it, then you get the same idiots demanding that you enable it so they can inspect your gear.

In short it's only of benefit for the elitists, who don't need it.

And yes I have a problem with Elitist snobs, I have no problem with people being better than me, but rejecting me without even seeing if I can play, stuff that.

    I support this

It was a fun feature in LOTRO which has a mature-minded community like ESO

One of the things I like is to inspect people to get inspiration for my build.

It will also add to the social aspects of the game etc. Inspecting guildies etc.

I'm sorry but as soon as people start citing WOW in their posts, I know what follows is usually a hyperbolic rant blown out of all proportion. There are too many people on these forums opposed to any sort of social developments.

    Hello fellow players,

My suggesting is when you want to interact with a player you bring up a menu which has all the options (Add friend, Report player etc.)

Why not add another option "Inspect player" This would allow you to view what armour and weapons they have equipped, The player can decide whether they would like to share their armour and weapons by enabling it within the settings menu.

I think this would make the game a teeny tiny bit more interesting and also allow us to view their armour.

    Many thanks,

    Jordon

No... just No and No again !
My reason for that is that it causes to many issues, the main one being elitism. You simply have too many people stroking their epeens, refusing to let people into groups if they can't inspect etc.
Half of these idiots don't even realise that just having good gear doesn't make somebody a good player. I'd rather group with somebody in average gear who knows how to behave in a group and how to fulfil his role in a dungeon/raid !

"Inspect gear"? Just elitism gone mad for those with epeens bigger than their IQs. Nah... no thanks

    :O
Then by the sounds of it they are the type of person that you wouldn't want to group with anyway. Also the actual amount of times this wold happen is likely to be minimal.

I'd also bet a hunch that most of the people crying elitism on this thread never do Trials anyway. Just a hunch.

Not just WOW, other games too.

In fact I have never played WOW, but I have Played SWTOR and it had the same issue.

The fact is as soon as you introduce inspect player the elitists start using it to reject 95%+ of the playerbase.

As another commenter mentioned this feature came up in a Q&A and the devs said they liked the idea but its not on the radar yet because they have so many other things they're working on.

I personally have been asking for this feature since beta because I love being able to see what a cool armor piece is so I can see what's in the pipeline. As for the argument that people will use this to be elitist so we shouldn't have it, there will always be people in-game like that and they will do this with or without an inspect feature.

So...instead of asking someone what they're using, you'd rather just press a button. Is that really a "social" development? It doesn't seem that way.

But there's absolutely no call that the game's mechanics enables and encourages their destructive behavior even more, isn't there?

Btw: see a cool armor piece on someone? Ask them about it! They will feel flattered, even more so than just from being ogled by someone unknowingly.

    totally this^^

In any game, there will always be a bunch of people who exclude others using whichever criteria (and subsequent game features) available to them to support their case. And if that's what they want to do - fair enought actually, because they can play their game the way they like, you don't need to agree with them.

But as it stands I actually do see benefits to inspecting people - as others have stated, it provides inspiration to builds, shows people the broad diversity of armour & weapons available in-game, and - for those who like it - encourages a bit of competition.

    Nothing wrong with that!

I want there to be a function that allows us to inspect the players armour and weapons and see what they are, For example what type of craftwork are they Daedric, level.

All gear score does is use an inspect command and add a value to the items it sees.

On top of the reasons given already as to why this is a bad idea, it encourages another kind of social misfit. The guy who claims to be an expert on everything and has to inspect you so he can give all kinds of half-baked advice based something he read somewhere. I have already seen that in other games. You group with some idiot who can barely play his own character but he spends the entire instance telling every other person why they are wearing the wrong gear, have the wrong abilities set up,etc. Of course, they are a friend or relative of somebody you respect so you can't kick them.

Also, just no to adding more elitism. I know a lot of people who are great players but not that excited about being a gear queen. A lot of the folks that base everything on what gear you are wearing rely so much on the gear that they don't actually play worth a fig. Inspect just encourages the stupid people to continue being stupider. If you have a good reason for wanting to know what a particular piece somebody is wearing is, ask nicely and if they want you to know they will tell you.

Idgi, why all the "just ask what they're using". How would it be detrimental to have them inspect gear, as opposed to listing out what you're wearing for every curious passerby. Do people have scarring memories of being told to get better gear? Memories that haunt them in their sleep?

Other games I've played usually displayed someone's RP bio (if entered) and perhaps current rank/level, various items (e.g. ship name/class in STO, badges in SWG), but never have I seen it displaying armour/weapon stats, and personally I can't see any reason why it should display that.

If it ever gets added, it needs to be togglable, with default set to off / not display.

Then the supporters will clamor that a gear inspection feature set to this default is next to useless, since only a very low percentage of the population will willingly participate (many wouldn't even have heard of it since they don't read forums/patch notes); that it needs to be an opt-out by default, really, not an opt-in, and anyway, wouldn't it be better and more useful if people couldn't opt-out at all? Because the feature will then already be in the game, making it mandatory wouldn't be much additional work at all, now, would it?

Regarding group play, anyone applying and not being voluntarily visible would either be shamed or peer-pressured into revealing oneself, or be shunned from the get-go. Then a togglable visibility option isn't triggered by an informed choice no longer, but locked into place as a socially accepted/endured enforcement.

Precisely. I am usually all for choices, options and toggleables. But not this. It will incentivize a different kind of culture in the game. Just ask people what they are wearing if you REALLY want to know what that particular armour or look is.

dont like this, feeds the elitest mentality," you dont have purple or better gear so GTFO" also dont like dps meters for that matter, just because someones gear isnt as good dosent mean they arnt good enough to play with you for all you know that guy in white gear could be miles ahead of you.

I HATE seeing someone with awesome gear and not being able to check out the stats/name/etc.

Elitism is going to happen either way. From what I've experienced so far, the ingame community is extremely friendly as a whole. I don't think being able to inspect people's gear would be a bad idea.

Then you haven't gotten the point yet, as a gear inspection feature wouldn't only be abused by a small group; it's abusable by design and it will impact the player base as a whole.

Speaking of apples and oranges, gold spammers might be a small group abusing a commonly used game feature, but they're also highly "illegal", i.e. they're violating the TOS and whatnot with their activity and commit a bannable offense. People inspecting other people and then rejecting them on superficial criteria hardly would be doing anything in that same magnitude, wouldn't they?

I would like to further add to this conversation.. to everyone that is saying no simply due to elitism.

You do understand that if there is a group that is going to require "gear checks" in order to join said group...they are still going to check your gear despite this function being added or not. Simply by asking you to link your items in chat and send it to them. Nuf said.

I don't care if they add this or not, but if you don't want the function and are getting angry by simply the idea of it.. then please think of some better reasons other then "elitism".

    Thanks-
