I actually agree with the OP.

It's not hard to pick locks, but when you are in a far flung location from the server, lag makes it far more difficult.

If I see someone at a chest, I will just leave them to it, I consider it rude to wait behind them and jump in if they fail - as far as I am concerned, if someone gets to a chest first it is theirs and they can take as long as they want at it.

That's not to say that I won't make a note of the location and come back round that way after a bit of time to see if its respawned, but I'm not going to swoop in on another player. I wasn't raised that way, and consider it really bad manners.

Like excuse me, I just stood in front of you for almost a minute with this chest waiting for you to take it and you call me a jerk.

Seeing as you didn't actually tell him you'd opened the chest for him and that he should loot it, it seems to me that he was entitled to think you were standing there showing him how clever you'd been opening it, and waving the open chest in his face rather than immediately looting it.

Given that you were the one that opened the chest, why should he assume that he was entitled to loot it? Players aren't psychic, if you open a chest and want someone else to loot it then it helps if you tell them that!

Actually I did tell him... I saved the screenshots too... but can't post them here due to community rules....

Not what you said initially. No conversation, just looking at him, looking at the chest, hint hint, nudge nudge, everyone else has taken the hint when you've done that previously...

Even if your new version is correct, why on earth would you have bothered to take screenshots? I don't believe a word of it.

How is that done? I play nightblades; I can get mobs temporarily to stop following me for like 2 seconds but once that stops they make a B-line for me again no matter who or whats around or how far I've gone.

I do think its annoying that the damn combat system forces you to stop picking when that wolf respawns on top of you; gee I am on the last tumbler let me finish if I want to take the risk.

I took screenshots of the conversation afterwards because the guy was a ***. That's why... but I don't care whether you believe me or not. Your opinion doesn't matter to me.

The worst is when you successfully open it, then realize your inventory is full, and while you're rearranging things, somebody comes up and takes the loot out of the chest. Not. Cool.

I fish a lot in a low level area, often there may be a chest nearby, if a low level player tries and fails, I sometimes note the player name, open it and mail the content to the player.

The chest is in an open area, The fact that you saw it first does not mean that it's your chest. It's entirely a person's choice to try after you.

There is no point making morale judgements based on this case.

For me, stealing is when someone steals the contents of the chest while you are sorting your inventory after opening it (it happened to me and I'd kill that player in RL if only I knew where he lives [my lawyer tells me that I should state right here that I'm joking, and I'm not planning any murder]). Picking a chest after someone has failed to open it is perfectly normal.

Picking a chest after someone has failed might be perfectly normal. If so that is a sad commentary on the ESO in game society.

Saw this thread, and holy hell, what a bright light on the morality of gamers. Hanging around in a GAME waiting for someone to fail in a GAME is pathetic. Enjoy your handful of digital shinies at the price of your dignity and honor, scab-pickers. Justified with tripe like "Greed is the natural state" or "A timer is there for a reason", sure. Congratulations on being average and/or apathetic. Really, honestly ask yourself whether or not swiping that other player's moment of fun really made you happy. I don't think so, and if it did go *** yourself.

Entitlement?? You are gravely mistaken. I didn't jump on here to protest someone's behavior towards me in a game. I piped up because of the trash you and your kin spew on this thread in your attempt to defend your actions in game towards your fellow players. Namely in regards to the OP's request that you practice some *** decency. As far as judging you, that is well within my capacity as there is no consequence in either direction. Regardless the evidence required for my verdict is clearly displayed in the content of your opinion.

I have seen people who tried and failed to open a chest just stand around for minutes. It's hard to tell when they are going to give up, most of the time I just run off and do stuff, it's not like there won't be another chest somewhere.

Heh..you might assume too much. I am not angry, just disappointed in your attitude and many like you that share the same. Chests are indeed 100% up for grabs. Yet again, you miss the point. In that I am 100% correct. For all that, you will fail to impact my game as my lock picking skill is legendary and my claws ever sharp. Dark moons light your path, milk-sop.

What's worse is when you take the time to unlock a chest only to find your pack is full so you cannot loot it. Someone else comes along and steals the loot after you unlock it for them!

This had been resolved in an earlier patch, I forget which one, and then got reverted back in 1.6. Lots of people are not happy about that.

@ZOS_GinaBruno is this going to be put back in place again? What was the reason for removing that fix?

    This is very simple.

There is a real live person that has arrived there first.

It's just good manners to let them have time to open it.

Whatever could be inside that chest is nowhere near as valuable to me as being nice to another human being.

If we were both competing for who could open it faster then that's different. The game has a flaw in that another can loot the chest you unlocked if fast enough. I would not do that.

What sucks is when people leave the worms, crawlers, or crawdads in a plant node and just take the plant. Then that fake out is left there for however long while a fresh real plant could have respawned in the mean time if it weren't hogging the spot.

As for whats in chests, its usually junk, but the xp picking the lock is the valuable part for skill ups. I'm fairly sure no one can take anything from it while you have it open, so hitting r fast enough isn't that much of an issue anymore. They could originally, but I think now it just won't let anyone interact with it until you close it. Having your inventory close the chest loot window if you try to throw something away is very not cool, and there should be a way to have your inventory side by side with the loot window to throw away or use things to open up space.

As for taking a failed-pick chest, that is exactly why there is a cool down on picking chests. Do not report people for playing the game as intended. But looting an unlocked chest while the person is still there, probably clearing space, is not cool, because that's just a design flaw with the ui.
