scratch that 'mac fix', it's still busted

Having this issue as well. Can repair the game and log in and play, but the next time I launch it I need to do it again.

Edit: Scratch that. Now I can't even do that. It repairs and then tells me it can't determine the current version again.

Wait so now you're not letting me run from Steam? WTF is going on with this fracking game! Getting so fed up with this.

Ran it from outside Steam, even exited Steam completely (which is BS), and it still isn't working. Way to go. Fix the game breaking bugs by not even letting me run the game. Stellar!

I exited the launcher. I renamed the depot\depot.version file in the ESO install directory to depot.versio_. I started the patcher, it wanted to download the full 22GB+. Cancelled and exited the patcher. Went back to the ESO directory, deleted the patch*depot folder (something like that -- it was large and had a lot of .partial files in it -- like a temp download folder). Renamed depot.versio_ back to depot.version. Opened the patcher and it was ready to play.

Just to add, started the game tonight, it downloaded a patch (haven't been on since yesterday). Once done it told me it didn't know my version. I closed the launcher and reopened, everything was fine and I could play the game. Once I closed the game saw that launcher was saying it didn't know my version again.

Tried running as Admin, nothing; tried closing and restarting, nothing; read through most of the posts here, opened again and launcher is fine and I can log in...O.o

I do not run the game through Steam but I have it running (and it has always been running while I've played the game). So to recap, nothing I tried fixed it, I didn't do everything Jessica mentioned, but it now appears to be working again.

Makes me think it's server side, or at least partially there. Either way, hope you all get it figured out and can get back to playing.

I can confirm that restarting your launcher fixes this. No need to repair.

I can confirm that restarting your launcher does NOT fix this! Repair DOES NOT FIX THIS! There appears to be some problem with the patching process. Restarting the launcher SOMETIMES will show Play, but closing it out and restarting it again may give the same error message. After receiving the error message, restarting again may give "PLAY" or "REPAIR" option with the error message. If you want to play now, just keep restarting the patcher and see if it will give you the "PLAY" option. If not, the other option is to execute eso.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client (or where you installed the game client) but that bypasses the patcher and not recommended until the patcher issue is resolved.

UPDATE: This issue occurs for me on Windows 8.1 so running the patcher as "Administrator" has fixed the issue for me. I've changed the icon on the desktop under Properties to run as "Administrator" and the patch issue is resolved permanently.

Broke and rebroke. Zenimax is making me reinstall. First I got the Billing Address bug that killed my ability to play for near a week, now this tacks on another day already.

Worst launch ever. Bugs in game is one things, but most of what I keep running into are bugs that prevent me from being able to logon.

    quicker fix:

Open Launcher, go to "Game Consultant", click "check for updates" on the game consultant, it will say new update available. Close the consultant and the launcher [seriously, don't touch anything, just close em out], restart the launcher - bam you're back in the game in 30 seconds.

    Hi

I have run repair multiple times, it fixes it for a few minutes and then the error comes back again.

I did a clean install to the default location and I still get the error.

If I start the launcher over and over again it will eventually start the game.

I think they broke it and they'll have to fixe it.

Also tried removing the patch version file several times.

Just to point out, just because you "fix" the error doesn't mean the game is actually patched for you. I finally got mine to stop doing the error thing, but I'm playing on the old 1.09 version, and trying to repair/update just sends me right back to the error stuff.

Now it's not letting me launch it. I can't play at all and running as admin isn't working. Please tell me why this was the response I recieved:
    Greetings and salutations [customer]!

Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls Online Team.

We appreciate your time and envy your patience. Sheogorath put cheese in all of our keyboards and we were overrun with ravenous skeevers!
Please follow the steps that we have provided below to help solve the issue:

Navigate to your "My Documents" or "Documents" folder in the start menu.
Delete the folder named "Elder Scrolls Online". This is a settings folder. It will repopulate when the game launches again.
Navigate to the "C://" drive on your computer from "My Computer" or "Computer". - Open "Program Files (x86)" - Open "Zenimax Online" - Open "Launcher" - Delete the "Program Data" folder.
Close out of all screens and return back to your desktop.

(These next steps are known as "Clean-booting" your computer and will disable all programs and services that start with your computer that are not the basic Microsoft services. During these steps, please pay special attention to the note that will inform you on how to reverse these changes, if you so choose to. You do not need to reverse these changes and no program on your computer is deleted. They simply do not start, when your computer starts; you will need to manually start them.)

Hold the Windows Key and press the letter "R"
Type in "MsConfig" into the Run box that opens and press enter.
Press the radial button next to "Selective Start-up"(Take note of where it says "Normal Start Up". If you press this and then "Apply" and "ok", then restart your computer, all changes made in this tool during these steps will be reversed.)
Uncheck the "Load Start-Up Items" checkbox.
Press on the "Services" tab located at the top of the box.
Check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox.
    Press the "Disable All" button.
Press Apply and Ok and you will be prompted to restart your computer.
    Please restart your computer.
Launch your game and run the "Repair" from the launcher's game option, which are located in between the news title and the news articles.

Please let us know if you continue to have this issue.
Thank you for your continued interest and support!

You can find more information about The Elder Scrolls Online on our website and social channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Google+).

Fare thee well on your adventures,

Anyone else thrilled about having to follow those instructions, because I'm not.

EDIT: I am reinstalling. Anyone who reads this and is fed up with trying to manually fix something that is on ZOS's end, just save yourself the headache and reinstall before you go to bed. Think happy thoughts :s

I was at my local community college and managed to get the game to work and patch on my mac. I get home and suddently my password is incorrect even though I just used it 20 min before.

I also had set my desktop to reinstall fresh and when I tried to use the launcher to do a clean reinstall, Restarted the patcher 4 times before I gave up and started it directly with the eso.exe, and apparently unpatched. And on this client my password works just fine?

My playing client version is 1.0.0.9*** my launcher is 1.3.5.9.***, the patch notes say 1.3****

And strangely, I haven't seen any post that I can find by an official whatever about how they are aware or trying to fix it.

I got the same error report after being timed out due to inactivity it said. Luckily for me, I closed the launcher, reopened it and then usually it works right away.

My boyfriend who also plays got this error, tried a few times to restart the launcher to bypass error to no avail, only to try one more time after it worked for me - and then it worked for him. :p

I tried all of this. Finally just completely uninstalled the game and deleted all remaining files. Then let it reinstall overnight. The game still can't determine the current version. I am not using the steam client, so it has nothing to do with that. They've botched something in the patch.

Zeekez's suggested "fix" does indeed work. It's not an actual repair of the patching issue, but at least it allows the game to start correctly. Thanks for this one!
