Tried closing, waiting, even restarting the computer. For me, it was running the launcher as 'admin' that did the trick.

Looks like running as admin did the trick.

Doubt it, you just got lucky on the random time it works. Everyone is saying sometimes it works, sometimes it dosent

We posted this in another thread, but want to make sure you see it, too.

If you are getting error 209, please try the following:
    • First, please ensure you are accessing the game via the launcher, not the .exe file.
    • Try closing out of the launcher and re-open it, then run a repair.
    • If you try to repair and it does not work, please delete all .version files in the game's sub folders and try repair again.

Wow! Thank you so much! Now I have to redownload the ENTIRE client. So thank you for your advice on deleting those files, I really wanted to stare at the launcher for 5 days, watching 30GB download, wasting my money, this is really how I enjoy the game, so thank you so much!

You don't get it, when I deleted the files that Jessica suggested, it caused my client to start redownloading the whole thing which wipes the entire directory. So unfortunately, I have to sit here...

I have 2 systems, both were getting the times outs and the 103 errors. one I repaired and got the 209 error on. The other I didn't touch and left at the PW screen. Then when the 209 errors stopped and it let me log in on repaired system I scooted over and typed in the PW for the one I had done nothing to. Poof both connected. So I still think it was a net/server side issue IMHO.

Thanks Jessica, I followed these steps and the launcher was able to repair and apply the patch. However when I reached the login screen I was unable to log in. Kept getting "Error 301 Unable to connect to server". Tried multiple times with the same result. Closed and opened the launcher, ran as admin, all with the same result.

Accessing the game via launcher worked, until i exited out then restarted the launcher. I'm getting the exact same error.......again. No matter though, this game is a disappointment at best. Won't be renewing my sub.

(By the way, I also meant to post that the game consultant doesn't work for me. It kept hanging on me.)

There is a support page, but the short of it is, after deleting those files open the launcher, when it says its downloading 22gigs use the small cog wheel above the news sections, cancel the download which will show a new option of repair. It will check your game, then download the files needed.

    Exited steam.

Game doesn't have to be running through steam, just steam running ITSELF is causing manifest problem for me.

Turned steam off. Suddenly, working normal.
  • Damien_Uvirith
I don't run my game through Steam, but exiting Steam did fix my problem.

    Same thing here...

I was able to get into the login screen, but then when trying to load the character selection menu it was like I was getting one of those infinite loading screens.

I exited Steam just to free up resources and tried again and it worked, sure it's a coincidence. When it told me to run the consultant the consultant box would just sit there and do nothing, quite literally.
  • lalaith_ofmirkwoodb16_ESO
Well I just deleted the .version and it still is saying the same error, so that fix didn't work for me. I always run as admin and that's not helped either. Tried repair, that is still doing nothing. Doesn't work if I try running from the launcher.exe in the Zenimax folder, if I turn my Steam off...nothing. :/ Gotta say I'm glad that I haven't paid for my game time right now.

I also had this problem. Unpinning and restarting the launcher a few dozen times seemed to fix it... for now.

C'mon, Zenimax. You know you owe us some free game time...

Attempted to restart the launcher a couple of times which didn't fix it. The delete .version files fixed it.

For you guys out there that are worried about following Jessicas last step If the data files are uncorrupted all the installer will do is verify the local files and download the latest patch. It shouldn't download all the files again.

Well I just deleted the .version and it still is saying the same error, so that fix didn't work for me.

Did you delete the version files in the 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online' directory as well? The three sub directories will have .version files you must delete all three of the .version files contain withiin. If you do what I did the first time was click 'open file location' on the launcher shortcut and deleted the version files in there all it did was make me reinstall the launcher.

    Good luck guys!

Tried to repair about 20 times, exited and restarted the launcher more times than I can count. Utilized the fix posted here and now im stuck re-downloading the whole client, so MAYBE I might actually get to play tonight. Very dissatisfied with this game right now.

OK had the same issue and tried the restart method, may take a few tries i had to do it 6+ times. Open launcher get error, hit close, repeat til it works. I am assuming it's lagg when checking the server for patches or something.

I was getting error 209. I don't run the game through Steam. I had Steam running in the background. I opened Steam in off-line mode and exited the program. I launched ESO and I didn't get the error again. Interesting.

So far this has worked for me after it started downloading the whole game again. Now currently just downloading a 600mb patch.

Update: I am now able to start the game after following these steps. Unfortunately I am now just stuck with the login and the 301 error again.

Update #2: After closing the game once again, the client started downloading yet another patch. After this patch my game up updated to Version 1.0.0.968197. I am now able to play.

Tried this, didn't get a repair option after cancelling the install. just had install or settings.
