I agree that a Friday is not the best time, but at least they got rid of Sunday. Unfortunately somewhere in the world is always going to be a bad time for someone.

Maintenance should never be on anyone's Friday night, just have to shift the day it's on and this could be avoided entirely.

That is why I said that I agreed it was not the best time.

Yeah I was just saying how it can be made into an okay time for the whole of the world (just make it another day than Friday and all will be fine).

    Dear ZOS,

You will NEVER publish maintenance times without a post like this from somebody.
Fortunately, you have the resources to solve this Gordian knot:

    1. Continue cycling through different maintenance times for a month or two, so that every day of the week/time of day is playable most of the time. Give at least 24 hours notice, and ignore the complainers for now.
    2. Record total # of players logged into each server every hour. Ideally, record general location (IP geolocation should suffice) as well.
    3. Set the long-term maintenance schedule based on the lowest population times.
    4. Ignore the complainers yet again, as they now represent the smallest proportion of your player base that any scheduled maintenance window will offend.
    5. Continue monitoring players/per hour to account for player population changes over time. Keeping track of general location can alert you to a population increase in areas affected by the original schedule. Also, start paying some attention to complaints; they also may indicate a player population change.
    6. Consider an Asian/Oceanic megaserver (if player populations in those areas are sufficient to support the cost.)

You're probably already doing this, or something similar, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case.

Well... they do have the numbers and the dough. And... let me just put this out there... it is the North American server. So, yeh, they come first. If you have to shaft someone you shaft the Aussies because we're a small percentage.

IF you don't have to.. then why choose to? Dumb.

Just a thought.. we do share timezones with (or close to) Asia. Remember it's also prime time in Eastern Asia. That's right - it's primetime for the bot hackers too. ;) Share the love. (Did that help?)

Meh, bots operate 24/7 so not doing anything. Also a lot of bot operators are probably Americans...let's make it Friday night EDT timezone to annoy the American bots.

A day change works fine however I would say the current times are working fine, while I am sorry it effects players in the oceanic timezone that's far less effected than the entire of Europe or North America.

The problem is the day. Changing the day would fix it.

Prime time is evenings for the over whelming number of customers. So 5/7 (71.4%) prime time uptime is an unacceptable service provision and should be grounds for a refund. Most people cant play at 3am because they are asleep for work etc. Can't play during the day as are at work etc. Can't play during the day on weekends as play sports etc.

I am a resident on the eastern coast of the USA and I hate this crap. I have worked my butt off to get a day where I could work from home (I am in the IT industry) and all day it has been down. Who the heck does maintenance during the waking hours? Does Blizzard do this with WoW? NO! Does Guild Wars do it? NO! How about EQ/EQ2? Nope! What about Star Wars? Nope!

This should have been done in the wee hours this morning before people were awake and while Australian users were working. I am thinking midnight EDT, which would have them done by 4:00-6:00, allowing AU players the chance to play when they get home and allowing people like me to play during the day. It isn't all about the kids who have school. Who pays for their kids to play? I can tell you right now I would NOT have activated my 30 free days if I had known I would lose the day to this crap.

I am NOT happy about this. Four hours on my butt, no work right now, and with my luck I will get a call about the time the server comes up, meaning I lost an entire day of my free time due to this crap.

CHANGE THE TIME OF MAINTENANCE TO EARLY MORNING!!!

There are plenty of timezone holes that maintenance could fill (how many players in Greenland do you have?), and even if it HAS to be at 8am EDT, please make it a different week day. A Friday night is ridiculous, especially for people who work all week and don't have much time to dedicate. A friend of mine is considering demanding a refund because every time he's tried to play, it's been maintenance time.

    Don't shaft Oceania.

I think it is a perfect time to do maintenance. Good Friday when lots of NA have the day off, and not at night when people are sleeping. Zenimax are so in touch with their fan base. Like I said perfect timing Zenimax.
  • Winter_Tactics
Friday is just silly. Especially when, as will inevitably happen at some point, the maintenance breaks something that can't be fixed quickly and rolling issues into the weekend...

It also *** me as its Friday night, and I want to play! Crackers

now i know someone is going to post.. why not play on the EU server.. sure right NOW it is in the US.. but they have mentioned it will be moved to the EU at some point.. Latency from Au -> EU is terrible generally twice as bad as Au -> NA and that is because we do not have any good under sea cables going that way while we have some good direct cables to the west coast
here is a map of the undersea cables for those interested
    http://www.submarinecablemap.com/
as you can see Australia basically has no direct connections to the EU and our latency suffers really really badly. so choosing the EU server is NOT a valid choice for us.

Just thought I would point out, as being in the industry and having already looked into latency based issues between AU and NA servers. That the only direct undersea pipe connection APX-East from Sydney to LA is actually out of commission and has been for quite some time. The owners SubPartners have advised that we are looking at the very end of 2015 as a date of resolution for this, but until that happens, almost all connections that exit Australia from Sydney towards the US are routed through Malaysia and Singapore networking exchanges. This as a result is giving a base latency of 170ms from coast to coast (increases based on your local network and gaming server locations). This can also be verified by running a simple Tracert on the networking routing.

Because this is the reason, until a direct undersea pipe is re-established, you are not going to see any real visible latency increases between the 'now' NA server and the supposed EU relocated server (in EU).

America is not happy with Fridays. Or at least the times. Should be 3am EST if they're going to do it on a Friday, not 8am EST.
And two days of scheduled every week is ridiculous.

I don't know who the heck voted for Friday, but that was ignorant. Having it twice a week is a bit strange as well. But due to the amount of bugs and general mayhem the gold farmers are doing, I can understand it.
Sunday and Wednesday would have been better choices, IMHO.

That comment is ridiculous, it shafts North Americans just as much, most of us have long week-ends just like you guys, I am in Canada, and I can assure you Friday morning maintenance sucks for us as well, ideal times for maintenance on NA servers would be something like this 1am to 7am eastern on the Wednesday mornings. (i.e. the night shift from Tuesday to Wednesday) that would be day time for you guys (on a workday) - seems to me, that would be the best time. Certainly maintenance on the morning of Good Friday is clearly not fun for anyone.

Let us all hope that they read this thread and actually make the change... or hell, not sure why they can't live stream the updates, RIFT does it with their MMO... don't see why they can't do it here... but I guess there must be a reason.

    Cheers!

Still alot less then the jumps required to get to the EU... try it yourself and see ;).. and i dont mean the current EU server as that is in US right now (and will be moved).. but a general EU site for comparison.

I'm a system admin at work right now and our System maint / backups are friday morning. I need to get in the office between 3am-6am. I got in today at 4am.

So it does seem abit odd to start maint at 8am est. At least in IT anyway

Yes, Friday maintenance is the worst. I don't understand the OP, though, are they doing maintenance twice per week? That's absurd, if so.

Uh, once a week is absurd. I woke up early on my day off to play ESO and can't.

Its hard to believe its 2014 and gamers are OK with "weekly maintenance." I'm no computer programmer, just some guy that plays video games, but seriously how is possible that not one single bright programmer/technician/engineer has found a way to keep servers running longer than 6 days in a row without shutdown???

My guess: it cuts into profits.

TLDR: Enough with weekly server shutdowns. Solve this.
