upside, the game was down so I actually watched the game award show, I probably wouldn't have. Todd Howard turns out to be just a little guy. I didn't understand how or why kind of primitive card games were winning over sophisticated world building masterpieces. It was a strange show with great trailers and also Statler and Waldorf. Some Dogg guy.

Wth happened? I’ve been trying to log in ever since I got back from my day job as a lawyer only to pick up my part time job as an ESO writ master and do my daily chores but the servers are still down even though it looks like they went down a while ago.

well another day done with out being able to log in to get my ESO plus benefits. Another day paid to play and nothing to show for it. Another day off the Golden event. Are the devs going to stop the clocks on these items? This really is getting old that servers are continually offline. Personal opinion.

You know, I remember the days when maintenance and server outages were a regular thing. Sigh. Worked a 14 hour day. Don’t complain. We live in the real world. Someone had a flat tire on the way to work. Someone has a sick cat. Someone is dealing with something unfathomably more difficult than taking a break from ESO for a day. Do your holiday shopping. Bake cookies. Touch grass or in my case… snow! 🥳 ESO will be back online before you know it. ZOS is typically fair about these things. I just resubbed for a year of ESO+. What’s a day? Rest gamers. Eat. Sleep. Repair your souls.

MAX added the old (1978) Lord of the Rings movie (with rotoscope animation) done by Ralph Bakshi. They also added The Hobbit (1977), and The Return of the King (1980).

The Bakshi adaptation was always my favorite as a kid, probably partly due to the rotoscope animation. Some find it jarring, but I love it.

At any rate, that was a nice trip down nostalgia lane. It’s been many, many moons since I have seen that collection (especially together).

For any Tolkien fans out there that might not have seen them, I highly suggest at least checking them out if you have access to MAX.

I honestly don't get the fervent disdain I see for all things AI. I mean I get when it is totally lewd anime garbage, but this image is totally fine. I don't see the difference calling for a blanket ban on "photoshop slop." It's just colorful themed pixels, and seems totally fine.

We are, by most estimates by people actually working on the tech rather than marketing bros trying to hedge crypto bets, probably 30+ years away from anything even resembling General AI. In fact, most in the field do not believe that conscious machines will be possible within a hundred years.

The AI we have is purely algorithms. It is just a tool like any other. Like a calculator or photoshop. It takes a lot of the busywork out of things but the inputs still have to be carefully crafted or what you get is just random noise.

The way most image generation like Stable Diffusion work is by taking source images combined with language prompts describing how you want to transform the image. More advanced applications "train" the model on lots and lots of images of a certain theme to stabilize the predictable range of outputs. But any use of words like "train" or "intelligence" are purely anthropomorphic. There is no intelligence or awareness or any code that could do anything remotely like Johnny-5 emergence after a bolt of magic lightning. Such is all purely in the realm of science fiction ATM.

I think if people know more about how the technology actually worked they would be less afraid. Like Arthur C. Clarke famously quipped, "any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic."

Even models like the new OpenAI o1, which is incredible analytical and can produce seemingly intelligent results, is ultimately just a huge database of cleverly organized human knowledge. It reminds me of the episode of Star Trek TNG where Q laments "if only humanity knew the contents of its own library."
