Why aren't there capes/cloaks and dragon mounts?

Because this is Elder Scrolls online, not Game of Thrones.

Seriously though, ZOS did mess around with capes in the very early days of development, but they did not work out due to clipping issues. To see what I mean, look at how the hip flaps for armor float and how shields don't attach to the arm wielding it. The same issues were far more pronounced with capes.

Unrelated issues. Cloak animation, whether it is the rather poor animation like we have with robes and dress-like things today, or utilizing proper cloth physics, is all client side. Might melt older player hardware, though. Bring marshmallows.

Ok so thinking on this a bit more....

How would the capes attatch to the body?

Over the shoulder pieces or under them? Would the shoulders clip through the capes? We have now the ability to hide our shoulders, how would that work with capes? There are some shoulders that sit totally flat to tthe body, light Ancient Elf for example so for those the cape could attatch over them but would look very odd under them. Then we have your typical "floating" pauldrons, of which there are many, under would work here but over would surely invite clipping.

What do you envisage the cape looking like?

A dead straight piece of cloth hanging down your back might work without too much clipping but how would back hanging weapons be dealt with? The cape would have to be underneath them yes? Meaning in my mind the cape would have to have little or no movement, to avoid clipping, pretty boring I think.

Or a fuller more flowing cape? Well then those aforementioned floating hip flaps and dual weild weapons would become the issue.

Of course all of these iissues might be able to be designed around by a player who really loves their outfits BUT the general playerbase might not be happy with a shiney new feature that they feel looks rubbish when they wear it!

This forums has been full of threads about outfits/armour design and usage over the years, maybe ZoS knows capes would cause more negativity than positivity?

Capes would require advanced Physics and the Game already runs bad as it is. (On consoles that is)

Just put on a long robe and walk around in it. You will see immediately why Capes won't work.

The game runs fine on my console, even in Cyrodiil GH campaign.

As others have said, it is the 10 year old game engine that our code is still using.

Dragon mounts would look odd just walking across the ground (or hovering just above the ground), which is probably a big reason why they have not been added. We do not have flying mounts for reasons related to the game's design and this will not change.

As for capes, there is a cape in the game for our characters. It is the Breton hero costume. The cape looks great as it sticks to the character's backside like it is glued on. The engine and game do not have worthy cloth physics, so we will not see capes as they would not look good.

This is not new news as Zenimax has addressed both long ago.

Capes would clip with everything but I would like backpacks and other items like lutes to wear on our backs. Make it so it appears on whatever bar you’d like so it could be hidden with a shield or bow while appearing with daggers.

Capes I’d love but the physics is so hard to implement it’s just not worth the time unless ZoS wanted to add it as a ‘major feature’ almost and even then the engine wasnt designed for it.

As for dragons, you’re treading dangerously close to ‘flying mounts’ which ZoS (rightfully so) have adamentally said wont be happening for 2 reasons:

    1. When it was introduced to WoW, it ruined a lot of simple interactions you’d have with players on the ground and made the world feel a lot more empty with 1/3rd - 1/2 your players in the sky. Little things like seeing someones outfit and mentioning it looks nice because now they’re on a flying mount.
    2. Though ZoS are sometimes fast and loose with the lore, they roughly keep to the constraints of Elder Scrolls lore, and flying mounts have never been a thing.

    The end, thanks for coming.

    Why not ?

Because this skirt is connected to the characters thighs and therefore move along with them.
If you glue a full length cape to the characters back, hips and thighs, what you get is the same visual catastrophy that is the breton hero costume.

Zos doesn't even want to spend money on new creature skeleton rigs to allow for a less ridiculous mount variety (Yes, I'm looking at you oh Senche-Raht that's become a bear that licks itself like a cat. And every other version of you, one more terrible than the other) so why would you expect them to spend actual money on moving the game on a completely new engine that allows for somewhat believable armor physics.

It won't happen. Zos does not like spending money on offering new things. It's big on retexturing stuff, this year even bigger on altering the hue of already existing vfx. - The only "new" stuff we get lands in the crown crates at best.
Yes, it's frustrating. But for as long as players share crown store data mines along like it's the hottest news on the globe, it won't change.

Sorry guys if I haven't intervened anymore but they have been very hard days at work that have kept me very busy.

Obviously those who don't like cloaks won't use them but those who want them I don't see why not give this possibility if it is possible to do it using the same system?

Same thing about the dragon mount. I don't expect them to be necessarily flying mounts but something similar to the Cliff Strider or the Clannfear. It doesn't necessarily have to glide or fly, the reason why it can't glide I understand and I think it's fair.

In any case your interventions have been useful to me to better understand some aspects of the dynamics of the game, generating further possibilities in me. I will try to start from simpler representations by studying the various dynamics better and I would be happy to show them to you to discuss them together.

I ask you for a little time and patience.

    Thanks and all

Since the main issue is that the "on the back" slot is occupied by weapons and shields, maybe capes should be allowed only for characters that have dual-wield on both bars? Or dual-wield with Oakensoul. How many would that be?

A miracle is usually preceded by a disaster, something that would need a drastic change like changing the whole game engine at this late stage and all the associated coding problems. Let's put this to rest please.

There is a slot before the jewel slots, theoretically there is space to insert them and they would make the game characters cooler and why not, they could also give additional bonuses (but I don't want to expect more).

Also I'm wondering, when are you going to include a dragon mount that maybe even has the ability to glide? (I realize the flight would be too much).
I'd say a good base to start from would be the Cliff Strider or the Clannfear...or a mix, if don't want to reduce the size of a dragon.

It would be interesting if to get it we would have to kill a dragon or steal an egg. In short, a quest that entertains us players.
I hope the developers take my idea into consideration.

The slot on the character page you have highlighted is for costumes and tabards. (no capes)

Capes and cloaks would be cool, but I don't think that's a possibility at all with the game engine.

I am always a bit suspicious when it comes to arguing the game can't be improved in certain ways due to technical limits.

The example I always take is the housing items limit. Devs keep saying that they can't increase this limit. But you can see that a very basic item like a fork counts as long as a huge glowing, floating, animated item that is 15 meters width.

Soooooooo yea, even if I'm not a dev, I do think that ZOS could allow me to put more forks and less huge glowing, floating, animated item that is 15 meters width.

A solution may be to distinguish basic items with heavier ones. For instance in a large house with 700 items, you could say that you can put 900 basic items, and 100 heavier items.

Another example is how modders have shown that it was possible to do something that was supposedly impossible.

    - Put open cities in Skyrim?! Gosh no!
    - Hold my beer : https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/87707

And you'll tell me that there is also a technical limit due to old gen machines. And for this reason, I'll answer you it may be time to stop maintaining ESO on both PS4/XBox one (many ppl will disagree but this is my opinion).

So in conclusion, do I think it's technically impossible to put cloaks in ESO ? No. Do I think the final rendering wouldn't be amazing due to the engine limit? Yea, probably. Do I think ZOS keeps taking refuge behind the "technical limit" argument? Yea, definitely.

Because only some people want them.
The development might be too high, this late in the game's life-cycle.
They might be saving it for Ron. When they need some gimmick to drum up sales.
Once implemented, people will be like, capes, meh...what WERE they thinking?

    Just guesses, really.

I repeat, they don't have to fly, they could just have an animation of open wings during jumps, without gliding or flying. I gave the concrete example with the Cliff Strider

We dont have dragon mounts as lore wise 99.99999999% of dragons see non-dragons as inferior insects only worthy of bare exsistance if they worship said dragons as gods, also dragons don't reproduce, at least in the traditional sense of the word, thus no eggs to steal, to quote the Blue Dragon Imp Pet: ""A 'Baby Dragon,' you say? No such thing. What you have there is a clever Illusion Imp that's found a way to get free handouts and a warm place to sleep. Young folk these days: so gullible." —Divayth Fyr"

    Cloaks/capes
    See Breton Hero Costume
Notice that this is the best that ESO's engine can do without pre-baked in animations (like exsists on banners and the crotch flaps on armour)

I wonder if you read or not. As I said several times, it does not have to be a dragon but an animal similar to the Cliff Strider. Also, regarding the mount, mine were guesses, not specific requests and I notice that many of you have not yet understood it.

Anyway I don't see why not use those banal animations since it is in all respects a fluttering drape, we are not asking for the moon.
Honestly at the moment the only constructive response was that of @freespirit who gave excellent insights for analysis, useful for finding a possible solution

Maybe a giant Spear throwing Ballista instead?

    Anyway..

I think the ZoS devs in the long run may agree with the developers of World Of Warcraft... at the 2012 Blizzcon it was asked what is your biggest regret...and they all said "Flying" in unison and that is with the knowledge that a sparkle pony made more Money than Diablo III.
