One of the things things year I did was make my first attempt at a snowberry crostata from the Elder Scrolls cookbook. It didn't come out like I wanted it to come out. 😭 I'm just learning how to make this type of food as I'm more of a cooker than a baker. But it tasted just fine!

It looks fine! And tasting fine is the true test!

Can we post a new thread “Happy _________” for every religious holiday we find important? I am aware that Hanukkah has passed. I would love to start posting every Jewish holiday throughout the year to bring more attention to that community here in the forums. Or does it have to be a religion/holiday that only ZOS considers legitimate? I am secular but have started to celebrate many Jewish holidays as have others due to their constant mistreatment in the world.

I think that is a great idea!

Haha. Thank you! My brother loved it so I think I will just try to learn from the mistakes I made this time around and make it again but better next year! It was fun having a dish where cranberries were the star of the show.

The Elder Scrolls cookbook is actually pretty good!

Feel free, although nobody created that Christmas tree I posted a picture of. It’s a memento you can get in-game, it was put there by ZOS to celebrate the holiday.

Never really understood the negativity of people around this time of year, even on years when I got absolutely nothing and spent the holiday alone.

Can you tell me where I can find a memento for the Menorah or Star of David? Or are those not considered legitimate enough for inclusion in the game? Just curious if you know.

The same place you'd find a crucifix necklace or nativity scene. The overtly religious symbols are left out. Santa, wreathes, and Christmas trees are part of secular celebrations too.

Many secularist use the Menorah and celebrate its symbolism. CHRISTmas trees may be secular to some, but very religious to others. If they are going to give a tacit endorsement of one religion IRL, I would like to see more represented. Most people of Jewish faith (and a large number of secular people) don’t use CHRISTmas trees because they are literally part of the CHRISTmas celebration when you open presents on or around the birth of CHRIST.

No. Not to the same extent as the secularization of Christmas or the Christmas tree.

The Christmas tree actually didn't even originate with Christianity.

You'll even see it as pretty common place even in countries like Japan. Japan is mostly Shinto, but Christmas is pretty popular there. They mostly do it as a secular celebration. You'll find a general lack of things like crosses, nativity scenes, and the more explicitly religious symbolism. Because they mostly are not Christians. They'll go and try to find the perfect gift for their lover and party with friends. It's got a romantic vibe to it more than a religious one. And yes, they'll be Christmas trees outside.

Cherry picking won’t prove your point. Here is an article supporting my view:
    https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/secularization-christmas-doesn-t-make-it-any-friendlier-non-christians-ncna831806

Unlike Christmas and its traditions, Hanukah is based on a real event from history that MANY secular people celebrate:
    https://www.csjo.org/holidays/chanukah/

Finally, my main point is that the birth of Christ and those who celebrate it (religiously or not) has nothing to do with ESO. The fact that it gets a free pass on the forums while many other topics do not demonstrates a double standard.

I'm aware this is not the case in other countries. But in the US, this is how it works. Private enttities are exempt from rules and regs supposedly in force for government.

Do you have written rules that are only applied
when you see fit? That is what is happening here. If you are going to have rules, enforce them without favor. If you are going to pick winners and losers at a whim… people should know that before they invest their time.

Allowing some celebratory religious posts (eg, “Merry CHRISTmas”) that are not ESO related while shutting down others is the unequal enforcement I am referencing.

This article is about American cultural practices and how that guy feels excluded by them and not the broader view of Christmas on a global scale. Japan is an entire country, where hardly any are Christians, celebrating it secularly. And it's one of many examples of the widespread, global, secular celebration of Christmas.
Non-Christians who opt out of stockings and presents aren’t considered bad at religion; they’re considered bad at American-ness.

He used to want everyone to celebrate Hanukah and for it to become more secular, but acknowledges it is not a widespread secular holiday the way Christmas became. And he points out you can still see the Christian roots in the secular celebration, but he still acknowledges even in that article that secular stuff is pretty far removed from the Christian theology. And now he's glad that Hanukah doesn't have that widespread secularization. But he still does not feel included with Christmas celebrations because he doesn't celebrate Christmas.

I don't see how this article proves the idea that the Hanukah is widespread celebrated in a secular way.

Edit: and by secular, I mean not related to Christians. I think that may be the disconnect here as Jewish is both a religion and an ethnicity. So there are people who aren't religiously Jewish who celebrate Hanukah anyway, because they are ethnically Jewish. But, there is not a lot of people who celebrate Hanukah who aren't Jewish.

Yes, we do. WE make the rules, we apply them as we see fit. And we don't have to discuss what happens with anyone. Now, mind you, it's a forum of long time gaming friends. But if there was a problem, we would do whatever it took to fix it. Without asking anyone else, and just posting an explanation after.

As it happens, I'm a secularist too. I prefer to keep Yule and the Solstice. But husband is much older than I, and Christmas is what he's always known, so yes - I decorate for Christmas, i have a Christmas tree, and he listens to Christmas carols (when he's not watching football, basketball, or whatever).

I do not personally find any problem with a post which wishes everyone a merry Christmas. I'm sorry you have issues with it.

Oh... springerle! I love them.... I haven't made any in years because i was the only one who loved them and jeez - even after giving them to friends there were too many for me to eat (at least, too many without weighing I don't even want to think how much....) And Hamantaschen.... I still have my first MIL's recipe, but no one loves it but me....

My family background encompasses German Jewish, Scots, and English - so I have a lot of things I love to cook for the holiday season. Unfortunately, I don't have a big family left, so I'm just making a "tree bread" recipe for those of us remaining - it's a very yummy sweet egg bread with saffron (and it cannot by any stretch of the imagination be considered "light on calories"); I've been making it since the mid 60s, and what's left of my family are promising me new Kitchenaid stand mixers if my current one dies (I already wore out one....) so they get their yearly bread fix!
