Assuming you do that's great but those who don't.

What makes you only look at general section?

The mess of different forums means I'm not interested in trying to parse where to post. Not only that, the fact that anything posted somewhere besides this forum dies instantly means it's simply not worth the effort. The only other "viable" forum herein is Housing - and even there, posts are few and far between outside of new house releases etc.

For just reading / answering I'm not even using sections.
Most of the time I just click in the nav bar at "Recent" and just check the first page of recent posts / active threads.

A massive reduction to the number of subfora. I'd say five at most, not counting the guild recruitment fora, which actually do need to be separated by megaserver.
What makes you only look at general section?

When you give somebody that many choices, they become just noise.

Only if devs were active on subcategories. Otherwise, there's literally no reason to look other subcategories because they seem to be just thread dumping grounds for threads to die with exception of very few discussions.

Less categories. There's too much clutter on the forums and not enough activity to warrant it. A few of them can be merged and get more proper traffic.

I only browse by category when there is an update going through the PTS, and then I check that place.
Otherwise, it is just "Participated", then "Dev Tracker" (wishful thinking) and then "Recent".

It's sheer existence is enough to dominate every other category.

It's a psychological thing. Humans tend to play it safe and general the more unsure they are and the more options there are.

Get rid of the general section!
If anyone here says: OH! But, PVP! I swear I'll ...

Thank you for the valuable input and respectfully recommend to discuss that aspect of ESO on the PVP forum.

I do use other sections. I'd never use all of them because there's some I'm not going to be interested in, but I look at any which interest me. I agree there's too many, but I wouldn't want to get rid of all of them and have everything jumbled together (especially since there's already an option to read the forum that way if you want), I'd just merge some of the ones with very similar purposes so there's fewer overall and less ambiguity on where specific topics should go.

I was kind of surprised at the number of people who see this forum as purely for interacting with ZOS, I guess I'm just used to 3rd party forums that the creators of a game may not even know about, but I've always thought of them as mainly a way to talk to other players and any developer involvement beyond posting announcements is a bonus.

I use Recent Discussions and the Dev Tracker. I use the search to find specific topics. I don’t go to any sections and I don’t plan to start.

It would never occur to me to expect dev interaction in a game forum. It wasn't a thing when I played either of the other MMOs years back, so I certainly didn't land here expecting anything different.

I feel like those who keep expecting the devs to post here are WAY out in left field somewhere!

IDK as almost every forum I have ever used in the last 25 years general posts were made in the general section.
And sub forums were for specific groups of interest only.
Post were not moved just because they mention a specific subject.

I participate in 4 sections: General, Combat & Character Mechanics, Bug Reports, and PTS (when relevant).
    • Combat & Character Mechanics - When I want to say something about a set, or a skill, or a build, or anything combat related
    • PTS - To give feedback about the current PTS
    • Bug Reports - When I encounter a bug and want to post about it
    • General - Everything else

The only thing that would convince me to use other sections of the forum was, it general would not exist, OR if I wanted to look up a specific piece of information that might belong into category x. Both never happens.
Whenever I'm opening the forum, I do it to pick up new drama, find out what people are complaining about this week and read the latest suggestions on how to "improve" the game. Jumping through all the sub sections would be too bothersome for me.
