Do people talk to people in TESO?

  • Malificarus
I have to toss my lot in with the people citing the lack of chat bubbles. I want to look at the world, not at a chat box, so when a new line of text pops up and fades away I hardly pay it any mind. However if I could set chat bubbles for /say, /yell, etc, then it would really help to grab my attention that someone near me is actually talking to me.

Also the lack of associated "talking" animation when speaking in say is just one more level of camouflage to hide the fact people are talking in your immediate vicinity.

In part it is chat bubbles, because (1) lots of players don't like looking at the chat box too much (distracting), especially when it is spammy like it is now and (2) even if you type a /say, often people won't see it because they aren't looking at the box and/or it scrolls right out due to trade guild spam or zone spam.

In part, there is also the trend towards having conversations mostly with known friends while playing online games. That's a trend that goes back to the mid-noughts when MMOs opened up to a playerbase that was bigger than the original MMO enthusiast player base, and these playerbases didn't mesh well together (still don't, imo).

Having said that, there are conversations going on all the time in zone and guild chat, as far as I can tell -- the chat box is scrolling along. I don't often stop to read it because if I did I wouldn't get much done, but if I am taking a break or something I may read it for a few minutes. I do reply to /say and even ask in /say at times, but that may be because my peripheral vision isn't so bad and I can see the white text pop out and so I recognize it as something I should look at.

I'd possibly not notice if you used /say until later, I find emotes and /tell breaks the concentration bubble much easier. If I'm in a town or village, I am much more aware of the general chat and people. If I'm out questing, I'm focusing more on my surroundings and mobs (and trying not to get eaten by either: I look at you evil slaughterfish! ;) )

    - not having to stop playing just to chat

This I think is unlikely to ever come due to the way that the game plays in terms of not having a cursor free when you are playing. I don't expect that you will ever be able to access typing in chat without interrupting the gameplay in the same way you do when you are accessing a menu, due to the nature of the gameplay.

I never know if someone is trying to talk to me because I filter every option for the chat. I go to extra measures to use an AO to remove almost every element and enemy tell from the HUD.

I RP all of my characters and I would absolutely adore the opportunity for them to talk to others. This is why a sophisticated in-game VOIP needs to be implemented. Not a general zone voice chat but a VOIP with proximity activation and directional volume control.

I would be glad to speak in passing. Just as if you were talking to any other NPC within the game world. That is exactly as I see every rendered character on the screen... just another NPC.
Words contained in posts, at which point I stop reading and will not respond...
Toon / Mana / WoW or any acronym following "In ___" /
Pets (when referring to summoned Daedra) / Any verbiage to express slang (ie, ending in uz,az,..) / Soul Stone
    ... to be continued.

    Now, get off my lawn.

I've used say for speaking to people next to me and while I do rp there are just so many people playing who don't that I feel silly constantly walking around in character. I'll switch to roleplay mode if asked to by someone interested and since I use lore friendly names that actually does happen from time to time.

I came upon two people doing pushups so I stopped and I started /dancing. Two more people showed up and all of us were playing instruments and dancing drunk and drinking. The community seems fun.

speech bubbles are necessary and important. It doesn't matter for which kind of the game (RP, PvE, AvA).

It depends on thing what people are used to, current is good but needs bit tweaking. Bubles can do it too but only if they are optional so it benefits everyone not only those who want such.

Without chat bubbles, you cant really expect people to talk. Anytime you do see someone talk, you wont noticed until well after its been said and they are gone, or if you try to talk to someone, no one else will notice for the same thing.

Its one of the main reasons the world feels so dull and non interactive. Was even like this in beta. Say chat is forever just quiet, with the odd message here or there you dont notice until 10 minutes lafter it was said.

Some people will just talk in zone chat instead. leaving say chat barren.

I still question the decision to place everyone of differing play styles (PvE, PvP and RP) on one server. I am not trying to be a Negative Nancy, but there are a some potential unpleasant social conflicts on the horizon and arising from this odd server setup.

That would usually not happen on a PvP server, folks don't like having their corpse camped for hours for stealing a resource node.

I've figured out a way to deal with those people on the PvE server in the other MMO that I also play. I quickly bubble hearth. If they want the mineral node, etc., they can also deal with the mobs that came with it.

Question on my mind: In real life do you just approach and talked to complete Stranger... I do not. if I talk, than to my family and friends.

apart from that...people talk in separate guild chat...sometimes....or communicate with voice-chat like team-speak and such

As for running... most people just do not have enough time to be in the game for long and the distances between quests are not short.

I am sorry...but we Role Players are in the minority.

I talk to people sometimes if I notice them. Though most of the times when I play, i dont notice the small box on the lower left box of my screen.

I usually only talk to guildies or people that im doing content with , be it a party ...

I dont talk to random people most of the time.

And honestly , i dont really care about role play in video games , i have plenty of tables to play the old pen and paper D&D , while true today i mostly play pathfinder.

I like to RP and I see all these people running through the world. Running, not walking. Like the can't get to the next spot fast enough. Still, I've tried to talk to people but they don't respond - or they just run away. By talking, I mean speaking to them, not shouting to the zone. But either they don't get it or they just are interested in talking.

Does anyone else talk to people?
I used to talk to players back in the days of pre-2000 EQ, when the player-base was small and you actually recognised names in zone chat as being the guy that helped you with a corpse run or whatever. In games after that, as player populations got larger and larger I stopped bothering. Players just don't seem like individuals any more. They're just part of a vast, anonymous horde.

It can feel lonely in the world, many will ignore you and look through you.

Well if you see Varhaatus walking past you feel free to stop me to converse, I like a conversation just finding any is hard.

People do talk, but having no Roleplaying phase tag, no nameplates and no chat bubbles does not help. TESO has pushed MMOs even further down the road of player isolation, where you see people flashing by but rarely interact with them.

With no nameplates showing the chances of spotting an individual are effectively zero. Heck, it's often not easy to tell who is a player and who is an NPC! There needs to be a nameplate option, really, to help people socialise.

k9mouse or anyone! I have made a completely new chat window/tab and/or I have selected/deselected/selected again 'say' and 'emote' yet I cannot 'see' when I do emotes or if anyone else is doing them. In most mmo's there is a sort of way. I am pretty sure the first beta I was in I DID see them. There was a player who helped me out on three sets of mobs and as we were parting I did the ole'
/emote *nods with respect... and I saw the words appear in my chat line as "Kierra nods with respect".

I cannot figure this out and its not super high priority I guess, but I'd like to know if its ingame and how to make it work if it is! Thanks all - love the community we have going both here on the forums and ingame, have met so many cool people already ^-^

Ppl do not expect anything useful to come from the chat (unless doing selling/buying themselves).
Can't really blame them, its' not "immersive" if there is no indication that someone in front of me is speaking to me but I have to look away down left and figure out which text belongs to which char I see standing before me.
    Nameplates. Now.

On top of that there is a certain... rush in this game - everyone is always in a hurry and running and running, afraid to be late to something.
Don't have time to chat, MUST run over there.... and there, and there.
Personally I think they should do some stamina loss for constant running, too, not only for sprinting.

So you don't like looking at the text window, fine. I agree, but why do you want to look at the text bubble then?

That's even more distracting than a text box at the lower bottom of your screen.

When wow started with those chat bubbles I was so annoyed. It was like reading a comic book, but not like playing an MMO ;)

I think more could be done to encourage interaction between players as there is very little. I stood outside the door of a tough quest awaiting someone to come along so we could team up. Without chat bubbles, I doubt they see what I've typed i.e. "This quest is tough, shall we do it together?" The chat box annoyingly fades away when I'd like it to stay there and read it when I'm ready, not just because a certain number of seconds have pass since the last message.

So, chat bubbles please and a chat box that stays there.

Oh, and as players don't have name plates, how am I supposed to identify with anyone in a group. NPCs and players all look the same. We need to be more distinguishable.
