Is there any way to tell if a player is new or is just playing a low lvl alt?

Someone at lvl 173 started calling me names along the lines of "wow new trash player leave the group ur dps sucks" on my low lvl alt and I'm pretty sure they couldn't tell that I'm actually cp1400 and just playing low lvl alts in rnd because I just felt like doing that today.

Left me wondering if there's some way to see it (other than seeing a lvl 3 toon with a quintillion cosmetics) because I've never actualy needed to see it myself, I never paid much atttention to that.

Usually someone saying that your DPS is trash and you need to leave the group is a sign of them being a new player.

    Greetings,

After further review we have decided to move this thread to a category we think is more appropriate for this topic, as it's asking the community for assistance.

    Thank you for your understanding

Low level character is kinda sus if:
    • Does light or heavy attack weaving
    • Has any kind of visible rotation like buff, dots, a few spammables, repeat
    • Uses ultimate at the proper moment of battle
    • Moves effectively - avoids a hit/aoe in time, doesn't move for nothing
    • Interrupts, blocks and dodges as effective as you or even better
    • Runs for mechanics earlier then you or just in good or perfect time
    • Keeps visible priority in killing the most dangerous mob in pack
    • Runs to the place where the HM scroll should be, just before realizing that it is normal
    • Keeps boss still if somewhy got aggro
    • Starts ressing players the moment they died
    • Obviously keeps good formation in group - not near tank, not behind healer etc
    • Gives adequate advice on mechanic/battle when it really looks neccessary

One or two markers could be a coincidence, but if you see more than a half of the list, then it is probably an experienced player who plays low level.
It doesn't mean that it is alt with lots of CP. Second account owners or NA/EU swappers disclose themselves the same way. So it can be real low level with 0 CP but still playing effectively, because hands of the veteran know the ropes.

I'd add to that list that an experienced player playing an alt would never stand around in the middle of the cities with their weapons drawn: that, to me, is a classic sign of a newbie.

So somebody that is AFK or tabbed out is a newbie if other players run around spamming skills that make them draw their weapons?

Like my level 30 new toon who has the Obsidian Dwarven Sphere as a pet? Should be a dead giveaway but might be too subtle.

Titles would be another giveaway but I haven’t assigned one for her yet.

No, I overlooked that particular case, so there's no need for you to phrase your post as if I suggested AFK players are newbies. [snip]

We all make mistakes. However, I'm genuinely curious why you think that experienced players keep their weapons sheathed? It it some sort of unwritten code that I'm not aware of?

I usually base it off how they look. A amalgamation of mis-matched armour? New. Custom made outfit or a costume? Not so new (When I make an Alt, the first thing I do is make them a snazzy outfit)

CP173 does seem kinda low for someone to be judging what is 'good' DPS, so I don't know what their deal was

CP173 means they have no character higher than CP173. And CP173 is not high level. It is only L49 and below where you cannot tell without the other excellent cues mentioned above if someone is truly a new player or has been playing long enough to amass, say, a couple thousand CP.

A L45 successfully soloing a WB is likely not a new player.
PC NA(no Steam), PvE, mostly solo

Because after we play this game long enough, we realize how silly we look holding a weapon at Ready in a Town.

Also, there are some spells that people will spam that will make someone draw their weapon. I come back from the bathroom and my character looks like he is ready to fight some one.

Yes, there is a way. I don't remember which Addon it is but there is an Addon that when you look at a player it shows the actual CP level of that player. I use to have it but don't anymore. If I can find it I will return and update this post.

Keeps boss still if somewhy got aggro

This fact in particular is too relatable for my in-game experience, especially at the moment :D

I run dungeons almost every day as my 2 new Arcanist characters to level Undaunted and get quest skill points, and there are many times I join groups with fake tanks (while I wait long times as DD in queue)... :( And sometimes those "tanks" taunt the boss and keep running away from him :( In those groups, it's such a relief when boss starts focusing my character instead, so I can stand still and don't waste my AoEs while chasing the boss :D

Titles are nice thing for new characters too, especially since they are account-wide nowadays <3 My arcanists are both Chaos Keepers, even though they are complete PvP newbies - both are low rank and without experience :)

Before that, I would always complete Maelstrom Arena on little characters for their cute little title, it was like a basic certification when they joined random dungeons as low levels :)

I don't think there's any way to know for sure. An experienced player who is good at the game will move and fight differently from a new player, but a bad player could have been playing for years and will still fight more like a newbie. On the other hand some people pick up the game much more quickly than others and can play better than you'd expect from how long they've been playing.

But I think the important thing is it mostly doesn't matter. Some people might be more inclined to be nice towards a bad player who is also new because it's easier to blame it on ignorance, others (like in the OP's example) use it as an insult but then, like a lot of insults, they don't care if it's true. But what actually matters is whether someone is doing the right things and if not whether you think it's worth teaching them.

I'm not new, I've been playing since 2015 and have multiple level 50 characters (and something like 950 CP) but I've mostly been playing open-world PvE and a lot of my CP have come from crafting writs. If for some reason I decided to start doing trials or even vet dungeons I'd need the same type of help a new player would because even though I've had the game for years I still don't know those areas or the mechanics involved.

CP 173 is a low level player. When you can't tell is if they below level 50, then you have to gauge the player by how they playing.

Someone with only CP170 is new. Unless if they came from a different server/platform. But a dead give away when someone is actually new is when a CP173 trash talks someone in a rnd. I mean, who cares what anyone's DPS are in rnds?

Oh yeah, you know what you could have done when he was trash talking your DPS, ask them to post their DPS. I betcha he doesn't have any addon to even post it. That's when you know they're new. Or if they do, trust me it's not gonna be anywhere close to yours-- especially if you've set up your CP on your alt.

    Same.

@Arcturus the funny part is the CP 173's DPS definitely "sucked" compared to a sub-level 50 alternate on a CP 1400 player.

Ugh, too real. Except I always put a taunt on my alts when I fake-tank, so I can at least keep the boss still. Gotta love when some players are SO NEW they don't even read the tooltips, and slot a taunt as a DPS. And then taunt the boss off me repeatedly only to then run around like a headless chicken with it for a while.

i dont usually run dungeons on lowbies, but i can usually tell when someone is genuinely new vs a alt

as soon as i hit lvl 10 on my arcanist i went and leveled the rest of the way to lvl 50 using imperial city, i think i saw some people pass me as i was soloing a banner boss at lvl 14 lol

i also remember fighting a banner boss in my 30s and some other player happened to be near me who was cp lvl and was helping but they died more than i did lol

there are also more obvious clues too for alts such as awarded costumes or titles lol, that lvl 3 grand overlord is certainly not their first character lol

Most players probably outfit their new characters right away but I don’t. I wait until I earn enough gold on that toon to outfit properly or I am more concerned with the grind and don’t take the time. I don’t want to have to get a loan from another toon to bother with it either. Last toon was level 30 before I got around to it.

lol Some players that have been around since beta are horrible in combat. Many of these are happily crafting and home making. While I'm not great, I do ok. But, I'm not one who chases the meta. So I might still receive some trash talk even though I have many of the experienced signs and a fair bit of CP.
