Bastian Appreciation Thread

Bastian has been the recipient of a lot of negativity but he does have some positive qualities. Please share some things that you like about Bastian. Below are some of mine.

He is a very good tank.
He has some really nice tattoos.
He seems to have a strong sense of honor.

I love his corny dad jokes. And I like he checks in to make sure you're okay sometimes after a battle.

Bastian is awesome, he calls me 'Partner'

He also does just fine in dungeons with me, we did Black Drake a few times and he kept himself alive pretty well.

He turned out pretty well adjusted and kind considering how he was treated and what happened to his family.

Baz is a good guy. A really likeable personality, he excels as a 2-H brawler. However I have to hide my pizzas from him. No worries, food intolerance is not a minor problem and i like him enough to avoid subjectingg a dear friend to inanities.

I wasn't a big fan of him in the beginning, but he grew on me. I do love his tattoos and I want to know the story behind them so badly. I feel like they hint at a whole other side to him that sadly remains woefully unexplored. His questline was good if lacking in detail, and I like his backstory and would like to see it more fleshed out. Let's have dinner with your sister! Let's go present you to High King Emeric and have you earn some cool accolades by us doing dangerous things together at his command thereby demonstrating that treason doesn't run in the blood! Let's go run the Silvelles out of business and get your mother's jewelry back!

He gets a bad rap for being some sort of wilting flower goody two-shoes, but he really isn't. He loves fighting, and often enters combat shouting, "For glory!" He doesn't shy away from violence at all. He approves of you killing bandits, after all.

And you know what, I don't hate that he disapproves of theft and murder - so does any reasonable person! You don't walk around in the real world breaking into people's houses, swiping items from store owners, and stabbing randoms in the back, right?

Good natured and kind. Wants to help people and loves books. If he was a real person we'd get on famously. Tanks really well for my sorc and asks if I'm alright after a fight. Soothing voice as well, could listen all day.

Sure, of course, indubitably.

On the thread's topic: he's a good buddy, though he should understand I'm very clumsy and kill critters by accident a lot. Sometimes, critters that are a few meters away from me. With a melee weapon. Anyway, my absolute favorite trait is his love of books. Mirri and Isobel like them, too, but Bastian clearly is passionate about them.

Bastian is a great tank. But I'm not sure how I feel about someone who hates cheeze.

Probably also unpopular opinion, but I like that Bastian loses rapport over cheese. And that he will talk to you about being lactose intolerant. I don't particularly like the gameplay way it's handled (you should have to try to give it to him [you should be able to feed companions] rather than just him being in its presence) but I like that it exists as a dislike rapport event in concept. And the way the LORE handles it. He just calmly explains that he can't digest it. And he's not depicted as weaker or lesser for having this food issue. That's pretty cool. It's also doubly amusing in an Elder Scrolls context because cheese is such a thing in Tamriel. I think the Mad God would probably dislike him for it though. LOL

I wonder how he would feel about "The Cheeses of Tamriel" book. It's part book which is something he loves and part cheese which he doesn't tolerate.

I would think that he'd love it because it was like a magical gateway that opened up an entire world, that he can later use to a tell a tale that's well spun and connect with a cheese lover, even though he can't process the stuff. I can just imagine him sitting in a tavern and talking enthusiastically about how he can't digest the stuff, but he knows this great story about this type of cheese found only in some distant mountain harvested by some magical process. Just don't offer him any, he's not playing around about it making him sick.

I appreciate very much that I can make him go away forever if I want. I used to drag him out for locating leads, but since I'm down at alts numbers 4 to 7 for upgrading scrying or digging, there is absolutely no point whatsoever in his existence.

The searing weapons skill gives Bastian and ALL grouped companions a flaming polymorph of themselves. Flame on.

He's not favourite companion, and he strikes me as a little santcimonious, but he's not all that bad in general, and he makes a nice tank. I also like the way he says 'hello, what's this' when you find a heavy sack.

He actually makes a very good healer for my tank and isn’t constantly pulling aggro away from my tank and/or dying like my friend’s Mirri does. He doesn’t have a meltdown if I accidentally harvest a bug. He thinks my scrying’s sexy or something. He’s not hard on the eyes.

I sometimes roll my eyes at just dialogue and have to send him away to safety when enjoying my cheese or looting a thieves trove, but overall I’m good with him.

While not a fan of his keepsakes bonus, Bastain(as a Tank) is my go to companion, totally irreplaceable imo, he's my bodyguard, and my brother in the good fight!, and has helped me clear some areas I previously couldn't.

Mirri on the otherhand has been kept locked up in Doomchar Plateau for the past few months, for thinking she's agreeable, which she never was!

No incentive to get the newer ones, as I'm in no mood to level anymore companions at the moment.

A few times I've overlooked a container, and Bastian spots it before me, which is pretty useful.

I like that he's about to learn a new diving technique! But seriously though, I do of enjoy his general positivity. He's kind, if a bit sugar sweet and I think we need more of that in life

Bastion and I did a normal Falkreath Hold for chest leads solo. I didn’t get the lead, and my 20k dps stamblade died often when one-shot by the mobs, or maybe it was those stupid fireballs dropping from the sky, but he surprised me when we took down the final boss without either of us dying!

Wish I’d saved the video to upload but I was so surprised I totally didn’t even think about it.

I don’t care about personalities as I have often said. I don’t run around with them out all the time, just bring them out for combat and then put them away. To many opportunities for negative rapport otherwise.

He is fiercely loyal.

Once, in Northern Elsweyr, I was riding from the Riverhold Wayshrine to the Tomb of the Serpents, with Bastian at my side.

As I was approaching the ravine from the west, I was feeling a bit silly and decided to have a bit of fun, so I rode toward the cliff at full speed, jumped my horse from the very edge, and went sailing through the air.

When I hit the ground and died, Bastian shouted out, "YOU SHALL BE AVENGED!"

Although, now that I think back on it, he might have been speaking to my horse, rather than to me.
