New Crown store item idea: "Increase RNG by 50 % for one hour"

Apologies if someone has already thought of this, but as someone who farms alot, I thought something like this would be a nice purchasable item: just as we can buy and use Crown experience scrolls, it would be nice to have something like this that you could purchase and use for dedicated farming, particularly for those leads that are especially tedious (looting chests, trash mobs, etc).

Imagine someone buying an item that increases the drop chance from 0,1% to 1% for an hour and the person is still unlucky and doesn't get it in that time. Can you imagine the outcry on the forums?
Coping with the math of RNG is hard enough for some people without spending real money on it. So if they should ever introduce something like that, it has to be free, like the pickeld fish bowl.

I kinda think it could work for something like a boost to the chances of getting improvement materials when doing refinement. There is already a boost to this in the crafting passives... so it could just be a booster for that. I think thorwyn is correct though that it would just lead to player complaining when they apply the booster but still get the raw end of the RNG.

There can't really be a blanket RNG booster because we have no idea how the RNG is applied in the formulae. Some RNG would apply to a loot table that may be weighted.. etc...

Yeah, I never get excited when they say that any drop chance is increased.

If you start with a small number and add another small number to it, guess what you get?

    A small number.

Or they could just increase the RNG chances to a more reasonable amount in the first place, especially for things that are bound like leads.

If they are going to sell something that increases drop chance, at that point they may as well just sell the item your after.

Let's say it does work and you start getting more items, but it turns out to be stuff you have already collected or don't want. People will complain they aren't getting anything even though they are its just not the exact things they wanted. They will then complain it's not working and a total waste, you see how this goes?

There is enough pay to win already. How about ZOS take those resources they dedicate to keeping the crown store running perfectly and always updated to fixing problems in the game?

Where is the pay to win? Pay to fast maybe but pay to win??

To stay on the main topic I don't think this is a good idea, i mean we already have a lot of QoL update for RNG, and leads aren't that bad tbh

I get it OP. I've had the same "big brain" thought grinding for kitten parts and blue prints early in the morning before work, or late at night after work. And seeing all your guildies linking their acquisitions in chat due to their fabulous RNG. Or deconning 1k mats to get 1 gold upgrade. It's just my frustration speaking. Increased RNG is still RNG. It's hard not to be able to have control over it. So much so that you'd be willing to pay real money, to impose a small measure of control, to a random event, in a video game. Grit your teeth if you must, but you must let go a little. You can't control RNG.
May the drop rate ever be in your favor!

(For a small sum of in-game gold my character that's a devotee of RNG will perform a ceremony in your honor. No guarantees just like ZOS's would be, but it might make you feel better?)

Where would you take those 50%?
I mean if something as a 3 % chance to drop something else will drop 97% of the time
So if you increase item a drop chance to 4.5%(50% of 3%) you reduce the drop chance of something else

The problem is, we don't know the current drop rates on many things. If they were to add 50% to an already unknown number, how would we even know it's working?

They have done something similar with the cp perk that adds to your chance to receive double node drops. Players have large amounts of data to show this hasn't worked since the time it was introduced and ZOS has answered with nothing but silence. If they were to sell a similar boost for actual real world money and it was bugged in a similar way, that would be horrible, especially since it would be players tracking thousands of data points they have paid for in order to prove a broken system and just hope that ZOS decides to even consider looking to see if it's broken on their end.

There are players that can't agree on refinement rates on gold materials or perfect roe rates, even when potentially 10's of thousands of data points are provided to them. Many people don't really look at data the same way. This item would essentially be a placebo for most. Someone told them they were "more lucky" so they feel more lucky.

I think this sets a bad precedent where system designers will feel it's ok to set incredibly low drop chances for things, leads, whatever because there is the excuse of "Players who really want it will buy the Boosting item in the Crown Store."

That's the exact reason that horse training is such a struggle unfortunately. ZOS has created an incentive to make things subjectively annoying in order to sell a solution to a problem they created. While it can be a great source of income for the company, it also creates bad game design that often requires a purchase to buy yourself out of.

As you noted, selling an RNG solution would just create even more incentive for ZOS to make drop rates lower, then sell you the solution to that exact problem.

If RNG or drop rates are considered low, an in game solution is a much better answer than a store solution as it promotes good player friendly game design.

Yea, I think another way we've seen this idea in game is with the Arteum Pickled Fish Bowl. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Artaeum_Pickled_Fish_Bowl

I feel like this may not be a good road for ZOS to go down, but if they did, I should think it should be done more like this. Obtain the recipe in some way - rare drop, Crown Store purchase, whatever - and then you can craft the boosters in game. Use an ingredient that is rarer/ more expensive. Crown Store version can then exist but isn't as good.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

    Guessing you mean improved RNG?

10,000% 'increased' RNG == plain ol' RNG.

Your idea could be interesting though. 50% chance the game takes your crowns and gives you nothing, 50% chance the game doesn't take your crowns and gives you the same nothing.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

Monetizing loot drops and in-game rewards is a hard NO, from me.

That is some EA level [snip], right there. And i mean that literally, since they do that in SWTOR. In THAT case, though, they lower your rewards, showing you what you would get if you paid more money to them. It's insane and a horrible thing to do.

    No.

    No, thank you.

As we learned from the green tree, the 50 % RNG in this game is almost exactly 33 %. So no, no way should something like that ever appear in the crown store.

The distribution law may be changed. The parameters of distribution law may be changed. The chance threshold dividing "do" and "don't" may be changed.
