NPCs Disappearing Into Walls

Has anyone else noticed this problem recently? Yesterday I was doing the Main Story quests on a new character and a couple of times an enemy would back up and disappear into a wall and they wouldn't take damage until I would move further away and they would come out of the wall. I know I never noticed this problem prior to the last patch as I had done these quests on several new characters since Blackwood launch... but only since last patch has this become much more frequent. In two instances I clearly remember, going through the tunnels helping free Lyris, one of the Ogrim backed up and disappeared into the wall- it was the one just after Lyris breaks the wall of rock down; the other was when I fought the 'Captain' who was arguing with Cadwell inside the building during the quest to free Tharn... the enemy that was with the captain backed up and disappeared into the wall. Having run these quests so many times, I know them all too well... so these two incidents were completely new and I'm not sure if it's something that was introduced in the last patch so I wanted to mention it and see if it's happening frequently outside of the MSQ as well.

I was doing Pariah Catacombs this morning and one of the goblins managed to back up through one of those inaccessible gratings into a normally unreachable area. Like you I couldn't hit him until I moved away a bit and he came out again.

It’s been a (minor infrequent) problem since I started playing a couple of years ago.

That's just it... it WAS infrequent until recently. That's what I'm asking... if anyone else has noticed an increase in this occurring since the last patch.

This is definitely not quirk, I just completed 'Plague of Phaer' and twice enemy NPCs disappeared into the wall... including one of them sliding backwards (not running, just sliding back into the wall). Also, when I did the previous quest to save the town from the Veiled Heritance, one of the enemies did the same thing- just slid backwards several feet but there was no wall for them to disappear into. This definitely started occurring since the last patch as I've never seen that 'sliding' backwards occur before.

@ZOS_GinaBruno Is ZOS aware of this, if not, can someone look into it. So far almost every quest I've done on a new character has had these problems. Thank you!! :)

I just thought of something that could be a factor. In all my previous characters, I always had Mirri as 2H... this time she's Sword/Shield tank. Is it possible this combination- with Mirri using Provoke then Fear causing this to occur?

Happened to me when I was solo with no companion out and not using any fear abilities myself either.

Good to know, thanks for your input. Hopefully ZOS can look into this.

Had this happen on regular for a while, maybe since Greymoor update? The ones that come to mind are falmer in Gloomreach backing into walls and kwama in front of Missir-Dadalit Egg Mine backing into rocks. Never used any cc and / or had companions or pets out when it happens. Probably part of same bug allowing NPCs deal damage through objects.

It was always like this. At least, since 2016 for sure...
Certain mobs in Direfrost Keep and Cradle of Shadows walk into the walls while they prepare thier "Throw hidden dagger" ability. Then they are stuck there, and they can be damaged only by abilities like Caltrops. If not killed, they will keep the group in combat.

In other areas, any NPC can walk into the wall while preparing certain abilities (which require the mob to reposition). Sometimes they can walk out of the wall afterwards, but most of times they are stuck (and you are lucky if you have some ground-based AoE ability slotted).

I haven't noticed it happening more often, but there are certain locations where it seems to happen consistently-- which is not new; those locations have been problematic for a long time.

For instance, there's a spot in the Darkshade Caverns dungeon that's a small cul-de-sac with a boss and a few mobs in it. The boss tends to back up during the fight and go up into the back rock wall of the cul-de-sac. I've learned to draw the boss away from the back wall before engaging with him, to reduce the likelihood that he'll get stuck in the wall.

There's also a corridor in the Ilessan Tower delve where the mobs tend to back up into the cells along the walls while you're fighting them, making them impossible to hit until they eventually come back out.

One time I had a sort of opposite scenario happen to me in the Volenfell dungeon. While fighting Tremorscale, he knocked me through the doorway to The Guardian's Orbit and I got stuck in the small space behind that door. Tremorscale was still able to damage me, but I couldn't damage him directly. Fortunately, my character was a PetSorc and my pets were still outside of the wall and could damage him. He kept killing them, but I kept summoning them (so I could keep healing myself), and eventually they were able to kill him for me. Once I was no longer being attacked, I was able to use the door from inside the wall to get out, then use the door from outside to enter The Guardian's Orbit. It was actually kind of comical.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!
